“And when all that was left was ashes, she would again clothe herself in flame. Rising from the dust of her past to rekindle the spark of her future. She was a Phoenix, her own salvation; rebirthed, renewed, resurrected.”

LaRhonda Toreson

I recently presented my husband with a nonsensical argument that proved that I am the sun. It went something like this…I cannot sleep if it is light out. Naps never happen even if I wear a sleep mask over my eyes and pull the blackout curtains tight. My body knows that the sun is up and I will not sleep. At the first faint signal of the light of dawn, I immediately wake up. As soon as the sun begins to set, my body goes straight into decompression mode as it readies itself for sleep. So if I am always awake when the sun is awake and always asleep when the sun is asleep, then a logical conclusion to draw would be that I am, in fact, the sun.

Well, at least my husband agreed with my argument that I am the sun. So I’ll take it. I am really not that narcissistic after all. But it is nice to know that I am the sun in someone’s universe!

But what does this have to do with the Rise of the Flying Phoenix? Well, the ancient mythological creature has long been tied to the sun. Over thousands of years, the phoenix has come to represent and symbolize many things beyond its origins, including renewal in general as well as the sun, the passing of time, resurrection, and the transmigration of the soul. We often see the phoenix as a powerful symbol of rebirth and renewal.

“I no longer feared the darkness once I knew the phoenix in me would rise from the ashes.”

William C. Hannan

As we find ourselves in the midst of a spring season following one of the darkest years in my life, I am feeling a renewed level of energy and rebirth that I thought might not be possible with the changing of the seasons in this particular year. But suddenly, with longer hours of daylight and warmer temperatures slowly making their way to the North Country (we have a 90% chance of snow tomorrow so it is a really, really slow process here), I am feeling much like the mythical phoenix as I gradually rise from the ashes of the year 2020, a year that tried to destroy me. Well, it won’t win because I am just like the phoenix, rising to extraordinary heights until I find myself able to fly again.

And what better way to celebrate my own rebirth, reawakening, and reascension into the world of the living than by showcasing my new Flying Phoenix earrings from Big Earrings. You remember in last Tuesday’s post, I shared all about Sharon, the wonderfully creative and super stylish founder and owner of Big Earrings, a second hand shop specializing in ethically sourced earrings that are big and bold and beautiful for any woman who wants to make a statement.

Sharon was so kind as to send me a few pairs of earrings that I featured in my post last week as a thank you for spreading the word about her online shop. She is a sneaky one though because she emailed me for my address letting me know that she wanted to send me a pair of earrings. But what a surprise when I opened the package and found three pairs of earrings! I simply do not have enough words of gratitude to say thank you and so I will just share another post about Sharon and her lovely products! Definitely stay tuned for my styling of the other two pairs. I have some ideas whirling around in my little phoenix brain!

“Whether we remain the ash or become the Phoenix is up to us.”

Ming-Dao Deng

As soon as I saw the red wooden Flying Phoenix earrings, I knew immediately that I needed to style something sleek and fabulous that would allow the earrings to really stand out and make a statement. I had just picked up this Zara black dress at a thrift shop last week and I was dying to wear it. I was afraid it might have to wait until the fall because of the heavy knit, long sleeves, and turtleneck. But like I have already said, it is still cool enough here to dress in winter clothes so it was a perfect opportunity to showcase my new dress, too!

Since I have been fighting the frump all through the winter, a dramatic curve hugging dress was just the thing I needed to help me rise from the ashes of my winter self. That version of myself really did need to die and be resurrected anew…more fabulous than ever!

Now, if you are wanting a pair of Flying Phoenix earrings for yourself, Sharon unfortunately is all sold out. But these particular earrings are from Green Tree Jewelry which you can find on Etsy. The Flying Phoenix earrings are laser cut from sustainably sourced wood and stained with water based dyes. The ear wires are crafted from silver-finished 304L stainless steel, hypoallergenic, and enhanced with a new, smooth, and consistent electrophoretic coating that resists tarnishing. They are super lightweight and comfortable for all day wear. There are some really amazing and gorgeous designs available on Etsy and most of them retail for $14.95 which is a great price for beautiful handcrafted, sustainable jewelry.

But if you would rather support my new friend Sharon in her small business efforts, please hop on over to Big Earrings and discover what’s new in store for all lovers of big earrings. Why not make a statement as you also rise from the ashes of the past!

I may be a phoenix rising. But according to this wall, I am also a rotten mom. Ha.

“Here in this suffering, all previous beliefs are called into question. They are consumed in the fire sparked and fueled by our own illusion. The pain becomes the ashes we are now entombed in. It is only when we find ourselves at this most imprisoned of junctures that we emerge again, the phoenix of our very life which is ever so much more beautiful than the last one.”
