Last Sunday when we ventured out to Sackets Harbor for ice cream and to photograph my Pink Tights & Denim Shorts outfit, Radical Ralphie got his groove back as The Boy Fashion Blogger. Plus he has not been too keen on Awesome Archie trying to steal his spotlight. The sibling rivalry gets stronger every day between these two little scamps of mine.

Ralphie did not get dressed with photographs in mind, but it was the first warm day where he could appropriately don his favorite USA tank top. I was a bit cold wearing long sleeves, tights, and a jacket, but Ralphie is not so phased by this cold climate that we inhabit.

He has always had a thing for monochromatic dressing ever since he could choose his own clothes. I don’t know if this is a common theme amongst young ones because Archie never did that. But I do find it rather endearing how particular Ralphie can be about his style choices.

Just a few days before our little ice cream outing, Jeff gave the boys at-home hair cuts because they were beginning to really resemble ragamuffins. What a disaster that turned out to be. Ralphie absolutely freaked out about a kitchen hair cut and he nearly escaped the chair with only half of his hair cut. It took a whole lot of negotiating and bribing and coddling to get the job finished to the best of our abilities. The result is what you see and there is not much we can do about it! Hopefully barbershops will be open by the time hair cuts are needed again and hopefully Jeff has no intention of becoming a barber upon his military retirement.

Every time we visit Sackets Harbor, New York, my boys love to check out the cannon from the War of 1812 which is housed at this historical site. Ralph was trying to make it look like he was shot at very short range with a cannonball and then he decided he needed to check inside for something. I have no idea what. Children definitely have curious minds and we must indulge them in their curiosities lest they lose their innocence too soon. That will happen soon enough, I’m sure. So when my child wants to stick his head inside a cannon, I not only let him but I take pictures of it, too.

I hope Ralph enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather in his favorite tank top, shorts, and sandals because we very quickly returned to winter weather with snow this past weekend and freezing temperatures for at least the next few nights and then lots and lots of rain coming our way. Again.

Happy Spring, my friends!

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee

He is so ridiculous, Tamar! Ralph was running around outside on Saturday in bare feet and it was snowing! He got so mad at us because we told him he needed socks and shoes or he had to come inside. His little feet were turning purple and it didn’t phase him.

Such a great photo shoot! Loving these pictures! I had to give my son a haircut as well. I’ve done it before in the past but not recently as he now prefers the barbershop or salon instead of his mom. (My hubby usually cuts his own hair and he taught me how to over the years and I think I do an ok job 🙂 My hair of course is another situation and I might end up having to find a hair dresser in Iowa…
Hope you’re doing well! We had a cold spell over here too, but supposed to get better this week!

Thanks so much, Ellie! I wouldn’t dare cut anyone’s hair for fear I would cause irreparable damage. Haha. I haven’t had my hair cut in a year! I am long overdue and need to make an appointment as soon as we are able. I hope your week is off to a great start!

Thanks so much, Mireille! I think my kids are immune to the cold because they have lived in this cold climate their entire lives. I am still trying to acclimate! Haha. It has been so rainy here this spring. We seriously have 1 sunny day followed by 5 or 6 rainy ones and it has been like that all through this lockdown period, too. So irritating! I need some sunshine!

Thanks, Emma! Oh my word, the food! These kids eat so much food I can’t even understand it! Maybe I am just noticing it more because they have been home with me all day every day. But I do notice eating patterns shift when they hit growth spurts. It is like they are always hungry!

I’m glad a Ralphie got the opportunity to break out his favorite summer clothes for awhile. That bright red outfit matches his energy. I don’t think his haircut is bad. He’ll be cool when warm weather finally arrives. I did feel a little sympathy with Ralphie though. I really don’t remember, but apparently my dad cut my long hair when I was about or five. I can tell from the pictures, it was a really nice cut. But I guess I cried when I saw it.

Thanks so much, Michelle! I think Ralph was more upset because the clippers were pulling his hair kind of hard at first. He has very thick hair with a giant cowlick at the crown and it was a process to get the clippers through it all. Once we set him off because it hurt, there was nothing that could calm him down so he freaked out that he hated the haircut, too. He has since adjusted and doesn’t even notice anymore! When I was a kid, my aunt used to cut my hair and I would cry every time because she gave the worst hair cuts ever! I don’t even know how she was a licensed hair stylist. She was awful. It sounds like your dad had more skills than my aunt! Ha.

What cute pics and a fun red outfit! My husband gave my son this style of haircut once when he was little and it did not suit him – he keeps suggesting I let him do that again, haha! While hairdressers are open here and have been through it all we haven’t felt right visiting yet. My son is definitely overdue a cut though so we might have to visit one soon!

Hope your week is off to a good start 🙂 With all the restrictions being relaxed here in Brisbane, my son is back at school this week!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Mica! That is so great that your son is going back to school this week. I suppose if he is in school, there probably isn’t any harm in visiting the barbershop. They have closed our schools until September at the earliest. I am going to need lots of patience to get through the next 7 weeks of homeschooling and then jumping right into summer vacation. I just hope they get our kids back to school in September, but I have my doubts.

Thanks, Jodie! It is funny how much energy they have when they are not being asked to do chores or karate practice! During those times of expected effort, they suddenly become too tired to function! Haha.

When Archie appeared on the blog and you saying that Ralphie didn’t want it anymore, I thought, Oh he will come around when he sees his brother online! haha, siblings! Be glad Jeff doesn’t want to do your hair!! Lol. Sorry Jeff!

Joanne, thanks for stopping by! I attribute my being cold to premenopausal hormones. I attribute my kids never feeling cold to the fact that they have lived their entire lives in this arctic place where we are! They are immune to the cold. I am not.
