When the whole world has gone wild, independent artists have found innovative ways to raise funds to support their art and careers.

When we all went into lockdown in early spring, we saw so many musicians streaming free live shows from their homes in an effort to bring love and light and hope into our homes. These concerts were instrumental for my survival when the long weeks led only to unfulfilling weekends that looked much the same as the weekdays. Except, of course, when I was able to stream my favorite bands straight into my living room on any given Friday or Saturday night. These weekend shows certainly uplifted me when I needed it most.

But as the months wore on and our favorite musicians continued to share their joy and creativity with us, I am certain the fans who tuned in week after week couldn’t always Paypal funds to the bands’ virtual tip jars. Yet, these musicians continued performing for us while they were still unable to play in public spaces.

Because they had no means of generating income through their regular concert schedules, other ways had to be found for fundraising efforts. Another major income generator for musicians is the sale of merchandise. And who doesn’t love to showcase their favorite bands on a cool band tee shirt?

I am a huge fan of band tees and have established a nice little collection for myself. When my friends of Fireside Collective announced a limited time only sale of new merchandise, I had to jump on board and show my support. Both monetarily by purchasing their new merchandise and by showing it off here on my blog! I even got Jeff in on the fun this time around. Now just the boys need some Fireside Collective merchandise.

While our new tee shirts are no longer available because it was a limited time only, made to order type of fundraiser, you can still get some really great Fireside Collective gear from their online shop. You can also support your favorite musicians and bands by purchasing their music. Go figure! Fireside Collective released their newest CD Elements in March and it is so, so good. Be sure to follow along on Facebook and Instagram for upcoming show announcements and to just stay in the loop where the best of progressive bluegrass happens!

Darlene of Aquamarina Style shared her post, Add a Pop of Color with a Red Kimono. First of all, she had me at kimono…because I am obsessed with that particular style of garment. Then she added red which intrigued me even more because I love the color and I especially love red kimonos. But the best of Darlene’s outfit is that this particular red kimono was inspired by my red kimono dress! Thanks so much, Darlene, for the wonderful shout out. And I am loving this casual styling of such a fabulous red kimono!

Patrick of Adventures in Weseland shared his post, Rooky Ricardo’s Records. I have this strange fascination with stores that sell that old records and books. There is something about the smell of them that triggers this weird nostalgia for me and I cannot get enough. So my attention was captured by Patrick’s post and his photos of this cool old record store in San Francisco. If I pass by an old record store or a used book shop, I always have to go check them out!

I think it will, Tamar! In fact, I think the technology that emerged during this pandemic is going to change the way life looks on the other side of this pandemic, for sure. I suspect with all the technology for school, our kids will never know a snow day again either! I hope things are going well with you!

Yeah, it has been pure craziness here as well, Laurie. My kids start school tomorrow and I am just bracing myself for another lockdown. I hope it ends soon, but it looks like we will be fighting this covid battle for a lot longer than any of us have imagined.

Very cool! We have been supporting our favorite Indy musicians through the tip jar, and we have t-shirts coming sometime this month. I may do post steal and do the same thing you just did when the t-shirts arrive. Love how you styled the new t-shirt with the burgundy tights and kimono.

And yes, Darlene’s post with the red kimono sent me looking for kimonos. I have one that just arrived, and another on the way.

So nice to see the pics of Jeff and the boys too.

I really love those t-shirts and would surely buy one if I could afford it. Alas, I have a whole $1.95 to my name at this point.
It’s always difficult for artists who haven’t managed to become part of the 1% who hit the big time but it’s even more difficult these days, I think. I killed myself when I was younger working full time (and then some) plus trying to make a go of my writing. These days, my disabilities mean I can’t work a “normal” job and I’m really struggling. Which I know a lot of people are.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Cie, thanks for stopping by! I think there are so many artists who work for themselves who have struggled immensely during this time. I hear you on the bank account, too. Just as quickly as a paycheck hits our account, it’s gone! And my blogging income has diminished to near nothing as well. The struggle is real for so many and it’s damn scary. Sending you lots of positive thoughts. We all need it!

Kudos to you for promoting the tees. The lockdown has brought out so much kindness, such as musos sharing their music so unselfishly. Kindness has become a creed here in New Zealand, inspired by Jacinda Ardern, our Prime Minister. I didn’t know what to offer from myself, so I did free breathing practices teaching on one of my blogs, the sort not usually taught, in the hope that it would build up various people’s lungs. Now I’ve moved onto easy postures and stuff. ps one of the reasons that I love and follow your blog, is because you are so caring and big hearted XXXXXXXX

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh my goodness, Ratnamurti, you are so kind! Thank you so much for this lovely comment. I love that you were able to use your knowledge and expertise to offer a helpful service to others. We simply cannot let kindness die especially in the world today. Keep shining your light and sharing your love and kindness with the world, my friend! And I will do my best to keep doing the same.

Aren’t you so cute? I love this maroon colors in this outfit, it makes me think of Fall! And, it is so good to support bands now during this difficult time. Your hair is so cute, I need to try that the next time I do piggy tails, with some longer pieces in the front like you did!

Maureen, thanks so much! You are right…any kind of graphic tee makes the statement so styling is so easy! And my family is usually right there behind the camera for all of my photoshoots. It is nice to get them on the other side of the camera with me every now and then!

Thanks so much, Laura! I really like Jeff’s baseball tee, too. I may have to borrow it! Now to get the kids matching tees. This was fun including my husband in the styling part of the post and getting him on my side of the camera!

So very cool, how these bands are breaking the business cycle and making there own business plans to keep going. I love it. I have two friends who are doing the same things with both their music and selling T-shirts. I love it.

Thanks for the feature, that put a smile on my face and sorry I didn’t see a t-shirt in there to be sold. LOL.

Looking very cool, love how the T-shirt color and tights match. You would be perfect hanging out in the Haight.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Patrick, thanks so much! I love the way artists and musicians have found innovative and creative ways to stay afloat. And seriously, just let me buy all the tee shirts to show support. I can definitely do that! I want to come hang out in the Haight…except I really want to hang out there circa 1960’s and 17970’s! Have a fabulous day!

I remember how much you love that band! Great that there are ways to support musicians now. I am a fan of NYC s Lucy Kaplansky, a solo guitar/singer songwriter that my hubby introduced me to. She doesn’t have alot on streaming, usually will travel and do shows. Now with covid… We have been able to enjoy some live music at the vineyard which we really enjoy! Love that you got the family in the shoot too! Great tee shirt with the jean skirt and tights! What is the name of the tight store you buy yours? I need to prepare for Fall!

Thanks so much, Jess! Fireside Collective are my friends from Asheville who I was visiting when I met up with you! I will definitely need to check out Lucy! In the meantime, you might also like Abby Owens. It is usually just her and her guitar. She does a lot of Facebook Live shows but you can stream her music on basically any music platform. It was fun to include Jeff in the styling part of this post and to get all my boys in front of the camera! As far as tights go, my favorite ones come from Sock Dreams and Amazon. The Sheertex ones are amazing as well and totally worth the investment. The tights in this post are from Old Navy and I have always liked the quality of their tights as well. I have had these particular tights for at least 4 years and I wear them often. Still good as new! I hope you are having a fabulous day!

Here I am scrolling down your wonderful post, nodding my head at supporting artists, then bam–I see you also featured my post! (Natually, I am–once again–a day behind!) Thank you, sweet Shelbee! It’s so great to be inspired by all the lovely ladies in our blogging world–like you. Love the photo of you and your husband!! Have a wonderful day.

Thanks so much, Darlene! It was my pleasure to feature you! And it was super fun to include my husband in the styling part of a blog post. Plus it is always great to get all my boys in front of the camera instead of always behind it. Be sure to check back tomorrow though because I think you will really like the post I am preparing right now! Have a fabulous day, my friend.

We’ve been watching a lot of livestreams to help support our favorite bands, and while I do miss going to a live show, I don’t miss not being able to see because there’s a 6-foot-5 person in front of me or getting drinks spilled on me! 😉 Musicians and performers need all the help they can get, and merch is a great way too!

Cheryl, thanks so much for stopping by! While I am a big fan of music festivals, actual concerts kind of freak me out. Especially ones at indoor venues. I get all claustrophobic and panicky and I don’t want anything spilled on me either! Or drunk people falling on you. I had that happen at the last indoor concert I attended in February. Although it was rather funny because the guy was so drunk and he kept hitting on me and it was gross and annoying. During the intermission, he stumbled past me and fell flat on his face at my feet. I admit that I did laugh at him…right in front of him. Ha. I hope you have a great day!

I am supporting my favorite musician–the hubby! He’s in a few bands but they haven’t played in awhile(obviously). I look forward to going to gigs again. I love your t-shirts and how you styled your outfit. How cool to support one of your favorite bands!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Aw, Heather, I love that your favorite musician is your husband! Can you imagine if you disliked his music? That would be terrible! I am coming over to check out your blog to learn more! I hope all of the musicians are able to get back the work they love very soon! Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a fantastic day.

  • Rita C at Panoply

Shelbee, you, your husband Jeff and your boys are all adorable. Love the tee. We have a small business printing shop here in town (Kin Ship Goods) that print great tees for causes, including bands. I’m still old school and purchase music I love (and vinyl for my throwback daughter). I can say I’ve purchased music in this pandemic. Happy Fall.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Rita, thanks so much! I just scrolled through your website for Kin Ship Goods. Oh my goodness, you have the cutest tees! I need to take my time and look through all of it! And how great that you still buy music on vinyl. I love old record stores but I am not a collector myself. I think in this digital age, many musicians don’t see the same revenue from their actual music. It is so important to keep purchasing from artists. We need art of all sorts!
