In Friday’s post, I talked about how every day is casual Friday these days…and that includes Tuesdays! I had mentioned in that post how I spend most days cozied up in leggings and a warm sweater and thought perhaps these stay at home outfits were unworthy of photographs. Until Darlene mentioned in the comments that I should try wearing some of my brightest colored sweaters just to cheer me during these final lazy days of winter in lockdown.

So I took her suggestion to heart and started piling on the layers in mostly black and white so I could add this fun neon turtleneck sweater from Old Navy. Old Navy is calling this color red but it is definitely not red. It looks bright pink in my photos but it is actually a neon coral color. While neon shades generally look terrible on me, I decided it was worth the risk because this color really does just make me happy. This sweater is listed at $40 on the Old Navy website but it was on clearance in my local store for $17. It is really soft and I love the waffle knit texture for a little something extra.

I layered the sweater with a pair of lace trimmed black leggings and a new to me thrifted menswear white button down shirt. Seriously, that was the best $5 I have ever spent. I scored this button down when I was thrifting with my sister two weeks ago and I have already worn it at least a half dozen times. It is super soft and light and doesn’t wrinkle. I lounge in it and then I sleep in it and then I wash it and wear it again!

I am wearing my favorite clunky combat boots again because they rock. And God knows that I did not need yet another coat, but this Old Navy camouflage quilted puffer coat simply could not be left behind at the wonderful price of $12 (it is listed for $50 online). I find at Old Navy that the best deals are obtained in store rather than online and so I rarely buy anything online from them. Plus they take forever to ship orders in my experience.

I finished off my colorful look with a bright plaid blanket scarf and my new confetti pom pom beret. I get a lot of my hats from Wona Trading, a wholesale site where I used to purchase much of my inventory when Shelbee’s Shoppe was still a thing. Since I still have a business account with them, I continue to shop on occasion for my personal use because you do not have order things in bulk.

Anyway, getting back to this delightful neon sweater outfit of mine. I loved this one so much (just like my casual Friday outfit) that I wore it two days in a row as well. It really did make me smile all day long. Every time I passed a mirror, it was like a bright ray of neon delight flashing by me. The power of color is a real thing and it most definitely has helped to boost my spirits.

Thank you for the feature Shelbee. I’m just admiring your version of the bovver boots as I call them. They would have been my preference but I always need that extra little bit of height! xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Laurie! I had to look up bovver boots and the wikipedia description was making me chuckle…boots associated with violence worn by “skinheads and hooligans” in the late 1960’s. Although I certainly am no advocate for violence of any sort, I suppose I could sometimes be considered a hooligan in a very loose sense of the word! I hope your week is off to a great start!

I can totaly understand that your feeling uninspired with winters like that. Pff, you have snow for such a long time! But it does make beautiful photos, always look on the bright sight.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Nancy! I find the snow very beautiful for photos in the beginning of winter! But now it is all gray and yucky. But yes, you are right, I shall look on the bright side and embrace gratitude for all the good things!

Thanks, Kellyann! I have been hesitant about the return of 1980’s neons, but all of the sudden I find I am completely on board. Give me all the bright and neon things because I need a mood makeover!

I love that, Michele! I am a wearing a dusty rose sweater with my leggings today. While the brighter pinks cheer me, this softer shade soothes me and today I needed soothing more than cheering! It really is wonderful how colors can effect our moods and mental health. Shine on in your bright sweater, my friend!

Thank you, Mireille! When I picked up this sweater to try on, I was certain it would be a fail. Imagine my surprise when I looked in the mirror and simply loved it! It really did perk me up when I would catch a glimpse in the mirror! And I know that I have told you before how brilliant cobalt blue looks on you so I am not surprised that it makes you smile when you wear that particular bright blue sweater.

Thanks so much, Ashley! I have been hesitant about neons and own only this sweater and one workout tee shirt. But I am really loving it now and have been finding myself drawn to more and more neon things. And these boots are by far my favorite purchase this year!

Shelby, this is so cute! I love bright colors over black leggings. This is my everyday wear! And don’t you just love when something you thrifted turns out to be essential…glad I came over to visit and here’s to warmer weather that’s right around the corner.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Terri! I also love adding a super bright color or a pastel with all black. It really lets the color shine! I am wearing a similar outfit again today but with a dusty rose sweater. I have so many thrifted items that have become closet essentials and it really does make my thrifty heart happy!

That coral color looks amazing on you, Shelbee! Wow, you really scored on your Old Navy run, my friend! The camo puffer is SOO cute! Thanks for mentioning, and–more importantly–trying my advice! Every now and then I have decent advice to share! Lol! Have a wonderful week, Shelbee–in color!

Thank you, Darlene, for the lovely comment and the wonderful advice! I keep wearing my neon yellow/green work out shirt for yoga as well because the bright colors really are inspiring and mood lifting! I definitely feel like I have more energy when I am wearing something crazy bright, too. An extra bounce in my step, a bigger smile on my face. Although I did find some really cute stuff in darker colors that need styling, too! Haha.

Here’s what caught my eye: the mirroring pop of peachy red in the background in the last few pix.

That’s a very cute sweater that wouldn’t meet my “covering the butt” requirement. And don’t say I could layer it over a shirt. Nope, not happening chez moi.

    xxox

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Anne! I did notice the pop of color on the dumpster and shed behind the giant snow mountains! It does create an eye-catching effect of sorts. Okay, okay, so I won’t say layer the sweater over the shirt, but you could layer a little lace extender over your leggings to cover your butt! Or even better…you could attach some kind of extender piece to the hem of too short sweaters and tops! Add that to your pile of sewing projects! Haha. I hope you are having a wonderful week!

      xoxo

      • Anne M Bray

Ha, yes, Mending Mountain is definitely not high enough and could use more elements. Not.
And lace? Ewwwwwwwww. Haha. At this stage in my life, I know what I like and it’s more an issue of FINDING what I like at not too high a cost. No more: “it kinda works, and if I just do this to it…”. That was the birth of Mending Mountain.
One sweater idea was to cut up wool and cashmere sweaters that are mothy and too small and make a patchwork sweater. But then I’d have to get the serger operative again. Because I disabled THAT trying to sew masks. Sigh. It’s always something!

My week has been excellent. Sending good vibes your way too!

        • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Okay, okay, I figured you would say “EW” to anything lacy! Haha. And obviously you do not need to add to Mending Mountain! I do like the idea of creating a patchwork sweater from ill fitting ones. But that does sound like a bit too much work for my taste! Thanks for the good vibes! I kind of needed them as of late. Sending some goodness right back at ya!

Thank you, Rena! I saw all the other colors in this sweater and I only tried on the neon one with the intention of going back to see what other colors I might want to get. And then literally everything that I tried on looked great and I had too many things to add more sweaters! But I have a bunch of Super Cash so if there are any of these sweaters left then, I will be grabbing a few more colors. It is super soft and cozy!

I love that neon sweater on you! It’s so much fun! In fact you’ve inspired me to pull out some of mine for later this week. Even if it’s just leggings, bright colors can really make a difference. I know I always feel happier when I have fun colors on!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Yess bright colours should be worn year round, esp on the gloomiest days. This neon coral looks wonderful on you and great find with that oversized shirt, a great versatile wardrobe staple that you’ll get heaps of wear out of x

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, JC! I am always drawn to black and gray and darker colors, so injecting some bright colors into my outfits is definitely a mood booster! And you are so right, the gloomiest days are when we should be dressing the brightest!

Thanks so much, Cheryl! I love the idea of dressy Fridays in contrast to casual Fridays when we used to have reasons to be dressed up all the time. But my leggings are so comfortable! I think this Friday I will dress up a bit more than normal!

This bright coral is perfect for you! It’s one of my fave colors to pair with olive or camo. I defintiely believe in the power of color to get through the winter.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Shelly! I never thought to pair this shade with olive or camo, but I really like the idea! I will definitely keep that in mind! I just got some really cute cropped camo pants and this sweater would be perfect with them. Thanks for the suggestion!

Your neon sweater certainly brought a smile to my face, as did that wonderful plaid shawl. I’m also loving the chunky boots! xxx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

You definitely should go back for that top, Jacqui! I love oversized white button downs for their versatility. They are great over leggings, jeans, or even alone as a mini dress (if it’s long enough, but skirt extenders solve that problems for me).

Never underestimate the power of colour to give us a psychological boost! Neons are wonderfully eye-searing, but they make us smile when we wear them, and others who see us also get a boost. Neon coral is an awesome choice, Shelbee, as it’s one of those colours that nearly everyone can wear – it puts roses in your cheeks (as my grandma used to say).

Thanks again for the link-parties! Have a fabulous weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Sheila, thank you so much! I love what your grandma used to say! Anything that puts roses in our cheeks must be the perfect thing to wear, right? I remember my grandmother used to get such a kick out of my style choices. She loved when I would ransack all of her vintage things stored in the attic and wear them with pride. I don’t know where any of those vintage things disappeared to over the years, but I do wish I still had it all (especially her vintage hat collection…dozens of beautiful millinery confections). Ugh. Where did they go?
