My New Cowgirl Boots & Link Up On the Edge #129

This is not a sponsored post.

Back in November, the Fab 40’s took on Western wear and we were all outside of our comfort zones. But it seems when I was pushed outside of my comfort zone into the realm of cowgirl style, I kind of liked it there. And as the universe works in her weird magical ways, shortly after that post, I spotted these Durango cowgirl boots on clearance in DSW.

I really liked the distressed look about them, but I wasn’t all that thrilled with the shaft height as it hits me right at the widest part of my calves. When choosing boots, you should look for ones that hit at the thinnest part of your leg to get the most flattering fit. Well, I just threw that rule right out the window and slipped my feet right into these babies. And, oh my word, the comfort level far surpassed any other boots in my very extensive boot collection.

But here was the problem…the clearance price was $175. So I walked around the store in them a few times and then sadly placed them back into their box on the clearance rack. A few weeks later, I did some Christmas shopping for the annual tradition of new slippers for the husband and the cashier handed me a $20 gift card that could be used the first week of January. Later that day, I received an email from DSW informing me that my purchase had also earned me $10 in rewards to spend. The cowgirl boots were far off my radar at this point and I figured after Christmas I would go find something cute for myself around that $30 price point.

The first week of January rolled around and my $30 in DSW bucks was burning a hole in my wallet, so I headed off to the mall to see what I could find. I now also had a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $49. So here was my thinking…I find something for $49 and I would only have to pay $9. You can’t beat that, right? I was committed to sticking to that price range, too. But the universe had other plans. I think she really wanted me to have these boots.

I browsed through all the aisles of shoes and boots in DSW but ended up back in the clearance section as I always do. I looked only at items that were around $49. I tried some on but I didn’t love any of them. They were either too tight, the heel was too high, too plain, or I already had a pair that was very similar. Then I spotted them…the Durango cowgirl boots still sitting in their box where I had left them about 5 weeks earlier. Except now they were 60% off their $175 clearance price…bringing them down to $70.

Still unsure if I wanted to spend even $30 on boots that I wasn’t sure if I even know how to style, I snapped a few photos of them on my feet and texted them to my husband asking if he thought I could them off. He responded that he was not a big fan of cowboy boots himself, but that I could pretty much pull off anything I wanted to because I am Shelbee on the Edge. Well, that was all I needed to hear, so I headed off to the checkout with all my coupons and rewards and left DSW with my $175 cowgirl boots for $30.

Then I got the boots home and was completely stumped on how to style them! I didn’t really like them over skinny jeans…mostly because of where they hit my calves. Then I styled them under a pair of denim culottes and they were wicked cute. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos of that outfit. But I had it in my mind that I would most likely wear them more in the summer with cut off shorts and kimonos. And then it hit me to style them with a dress. It was a strangely mild day for January in the North Country, so I threw together this black and white outfit (completely shopped old things in my closet for this one) and braved the crazy winds (not always the best idea for a short flippy dress) and here you have it.

So what do you think? Can I pull off cowgirl boots? I am still not sure if they are totally “me”. But I do love them. And did I mention that they are insanely comfortable?

Thanks so much, Ashley! I took these photos the second week of January when we had two days of really mild weather. The snow all melted away just in time for the next big snowstorm. Today, we have a huge lake effect storm hovering over us threatening 16-24 inches of snow by morning. I am struggling with getting any decent blog photos these days between the snow and the bitter, bitter cold!

Oh, Shelbee!! Those are amazing and such a fabulous deal. See, it does pay to wait. And I bet the more you try them with pieces, the easier it will be to style them. I have a pair of my dads (and a pair of my own). Maybe we should plan a little western theme for our magnificent 8??
And don’t forget the shorts in the winter…I got that from you!!

Yes, Jodie! Shorts in winter with tights and cowgirl boots and velvet kimonos! Gah. And I like the idea of a Western theme for the Magnificent 8! See, Jennie pushed me out there into uncomfortable land and I am finding myself getting more and more comfortable with it…like shorts and tights in the winter!

Hey, Shelbee! I couldn’t agree more with your husband! I have a hunch in a few months you’ll wonder how you could have doubted yourself with all of your styling options. Yay, for a warmish day! Your poppin’ pink gloves are fun. I feel the same way about the western influence, with our eminent move to TX, my girls told me I should *not* get cowboy boots–haha! Hugs, have a great weekend and Happy 9th Anniversary!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Kim! And I totally think you should get some cowgirl boots and style them up in your own fabulous way! That warmish day was fleeting as we are now sitting in the middle of a lake effect snowstorm threatening 16-24 inches of snow by morning. Now, I am just wondering how to get myself to work! Ha. Have a great weekend, my friend.

Evidently those boots were meant to be yours! Love how you styled them with this great pattern mix and my eyes kept being drawn to that fab dress. I so love the distressed look of your new cowboy boots and know you will find a number of ways to wear them in the coming months. Girl. That Western theme got to me, too, and I have been styling things with a western twang often since then! Gotta say I love how it made me expand my horizons while considering my wardrobe!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, Jennie! For the lovely comment, but mostly for pushing me outside my comfort zone on this one! It was funny when we did the Western theme, I realized that boho is very Western inspired and all of us rock boho pretty well so I don’t know what intimidated us so much to begin with…but now here we are, styling outside of our comfort zones and realizing all the fabulous things we can do with our wardrobes. I am actually quite excited to style these boots with jean shorts and kimonos in the summer. I just hope my feet don’t get too hot!

Now that is a bargain. I immediately thought: dresses! And look how good it looks! But those boots are very cool, very stylish! Like to see more of them!

  • Barbara Chapman

SERIOUS SCORE, Shelbee!!! Woot! Those boots were meant for You! ;D That’s so awesome that all the coupons came in and that those boots were still there… 🙂 I am totally happy for you because I have two pairs of dress boots now and they both are seriously comfortable. Now you know what brand to look for the next time you are looking for boots since these fit so well. We have Cavenders down here in North Central Texas and the first time my hubby walked in (at the Ft. Worth store a year ago), the gentleman there took one look at Hubby’s feet and pulled THE PAIR off the shelf… Those were the ones Mr. Ethereal walked out with.

Great find and thank you for hosting. Pinned a couple photos already (with hashtags which seem to do better) and tweeted the party. <3
    Happy for you,
    Barb 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Barb, thanks so much for your kind compliments and for pinning! I didn’t even know about hashtags on Pinterest. I will need to up my game going forward! And how cool that the Cavender’s salesman knew exactly the pair for your husband! I have always heard people say there are no shoes more comfortable than a pair of quality broken in cowboy boots. Now I have some…I just need to break them in. Thanks again and have a fantastic weekend!

You look great. A dress or skirt with tights and cowboy boots rock. Just stuff I have seen in the different blogs. The blog that you inspired is up. My first fashion blog. LOL. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Patrick! I agree with you about a dress or skirt with cowboy boots. So fun and edgy and kind of kickass! I just checked out your blog post. I love it! You are killing it in all of your fun tees and sweatshirts and such. Just be true to yourself and that is all the style you need!

Your boots are fabulous! You can pull off any kind of footwear you try! I am loving your bright gloves too! I only have boring black ones, but those pink ones are so fun!

  • Maureen

What a wonderful story! These boots look amazing and I just love the distressing. It really has an edge to it that no other than a cowboy boots can bring. The best part, how amazing that you were able to get them for such a bargain. Always a fan of good deals! Happy Friday Shelbee and wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend!

WOW!! I love a good deal! And the boots are cute. I want some gray boots– but I didn’t like the slouchy look that I was finding them in….I have slipper looking ones right now that I don’t love…. But yours are GREAT! I used up all five of my links today. Have a great weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Liberty! I am not a big fan of the slouchy style boots either. And I always struggle to find cute boots in gray as well, for some reason. I think maybe it is the color. I am glad you linked up lots of posts! Thanks for joining the party.

Keep those boots, girl, you never know when you will need to jump on/off the back of a tractor. Or a pickup. The boots are way cool, and have infinite styling possibilities. If you run out, watch the movie Urban Cowboy and you can get a bunch more. I always liked them with a dress or skirt, and they also look fabulous with a midi/maxi skirt and a chambray shirt tied at the waist. They work with shorts and a tank, and of course there is always the iconic boot cut jeans, boots and flannel shirt. Score!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Susan! I am liking all of these style tips you have provided! I tried them on with an ivory lace maxi dress in Torrid that I have been eyeing up for months. And while they were super cute with said dress, the dress was not all that flattering on me, so I left it at Torrid. But I am thinking if I can find another ivory lace maxi dress that does look good on me, these cowgirl boots are just the shoes for it!

All good things are worth waiting for, right? Well, I thought so and you styled your boots just right, love the flippy dress over leggings. Not sure at 72 that I could get away with leggings. Have you heard about treggings? I stumbled onto them on Pinterest, now they have leggings, jeggings and treggings. Fashion sure has changed. I do remember the first stirrup pants, they were made of stretchy fabric and the look really was sleek and really dressy. And I still dont like the fitted jeans that are tight on the calf, they just dont feel comfortable to me, but the thigh is ok.
Thanks for sharing your posts on #omhgff this week!
Hope you have a great weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, Karren! And I think you could totally get away with leggings if you wear them confidently! There are no age restrictions on clothing in my book! And it’s funny that you mention stirrup pants. I hated them. I felt like they always fell down at the waist. Like the stirrups pulled them off! And I have not heard of these treggings. I must go investigate now. I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well, my friend!

Pull it off? Of course! Styled with perfection.
I have limited interest in these kind of boots , but I do enjoy the classic nature and the western flair. I have one pair of vintage Fyre boots that I just love. They are trending now and I think they will be around for a while.
I wore mind about six months ago with a pink tulle skirt and I enjoyed the dichotomy .
That is a great point about shaft height . A great decision —- and you can’t fight the universe!
    Lol.
    Great post!

Elle, thank you so much! Oh, I do love Frye boots and you have vintage ones! How wonderful. I am going to have to go back in your IG feed and blog and look for them styled with your pink tulle skirt because it sounds magnificent!

You really were meant to have those boots, weren’t you?? They are pretty fabulous though!
I don’t understand why you’re worrying about your calves though. You have gorgeous, shapely legs and these boots just highlight that for me! Wear them with skinny jeans, Shelbee. You’ll look amazing!!
LOVE the pop of bright pink here, btw 😉
