Memorial Day weekend is upon us so I wanted to share a fun outfit idea to show my patriotism as we celebrate and honor all the United States military lives that have been lost in defense of our great nation. As much as I love the combination of red, white, and blue, it is one that I find myself wearing more often during the summer months when we celebrate our most American holidays here in the United States. It starts with Memorial Day in May which leads to Independence Day in July with summer finally coming to an end on Labor Day in September.

This is certainly the season in the world of fashion and style blogging when social media feeds and retailer advertisements will be in full red, white, and blue bloom. Interestingly, this combination of classic colors is actually the most common color palette used on national flags worldwide.

I found these fascinating statistics about flag colors and combinations and it really appealed to my nerdy side so I am going to share a tiny bit. There are currently 192 different flags for independent countries around the globe. Seventy-six flags (approximately 40% of all national flags) incorporate three different colors. Of those seventy-six, red, white and blue is the most popular combination appearing on 30 different flags of independent states.

To break it down further, at least of one of these three colors appears on almost every flag in the world with red being the most dominant (148 of 196 flags incorporate the color red), white as the second most popular (140 of 196 flags use white in the design), and blue is the third most popular (102 of 196 flags have the color blue). In fact, Jamaica is the only country in the world that does not have one of these three colors in their national flag (black, green, and gold only). Until 2017, Mauritania’s national flag was the only other country to not incorporate red, white, or blue into their green and gold flag. But four years ago, they added red stripes to the top and bottom of their national flag leaving Jamaica to stand alone in their very unique flag color combination.

Okay, nerd girl is satisfied now so let me get back to my red, white, and blue outfit. Clearly, these three colors together have some kind of magical power or we wouldn’t continue to choose them as representations of patriotism and national pride. Of the three primary colors, I have always been drawn much more to blue and red than to yellow as they appeal to my eye and flatter my coloring much more. But I do still love the sunshiny brightness of yellow and try to incorporate this color into my wardrobe when I can because it is such a happy hue. It is not surprising that yellow is the fourth most popular color in flag design because of the powerful punch that it delivers.

But there is no yellow here today. I did the whole yellow and blue combination earlier this week which is great for summertime vibing. But red, white, and blue is great for summertime feels, too.

You may recall my thrifted seersucker blazer from my Easter outfit when I combined it with light blue and white gingham and shades of pink (essentially a pastel version of red, white, and blue). I have always loved seersucker at this time of year. It is sort of nostalgic and classic and sings the songs of summer with its teeny tiny stripes and paler shades of blue and white…like a summertime sky on a partly cloudy day.

I also love a good pattern mix to keep things interesting and so I wanted to try to remix this blazer for a more patriotic look. That is where this red and white floral midi dress comes in. I found this on Torrid clearance recently and I really loved the bold red color. I wasn’t completely sold on the dress style, but it is crafted from a mid weight cotton material with a tiny bit of stretch which adds to the comfortability factor. It also has pockets and I know that all women get excited about dresses with pockets!

To finish it off, I added a really old pair of red espadrille sandals, an old fringy clutch, and this beautiful set of blue butterfly jewelry that I just discovered in their original gift box inside my jewelry armoire. I cannot recall where it came from but I have a feeling that Jeff’s grandmother gave this set to me years ago which makes perfect sense since we had a shared love of butterflies and butterfly jewelry. However, it may have been a gift from my mother-in-law as well. (Gramma, if you are reading this, do let me know if this butterfly jewelry looks familiar to you.)

In any event, I am glad I discovered it because I absolutely love the necklace and earrings and they were perfect with my patriotic Memorial Day outfit.

I have mentioned before that I generally change up my outfits after photographing them to make them more comfortable and practical for sitting at home on my laptop all day long so I have been trying to remember to photograph my alternate styling of my outfits when I do this. I swapped out the blazer for a white duster cardigan and switched from my wedge sandals to flat red ones. The alternatives really are endless when it comes to styling anything in our closets.

We currently have no plans for celebrating Memorial Day this year as we have celebrated a ton of things this month already and I am kind of partied out. So I likely will not get so dressed up for the holiday this year, but I will be certain to show my respect and gratitude for the military men and women who have lost their lives in service to our country.

American friends, how will you be celebrating, honoring, and remembering our lost soldiers this weekend? And for my international friends, does your country have a similar holiday of remembrance for lives lost in support and defense of your own nation? Do you like to show your patriotism by wearing your national colors? What are your national colors?

This is really such a pretty combination Shelbee – I love that dress. I have been looking for one like that and have tried a few but nothing has worked yet. It looks great dressed up or down and is so versatile and easy to wear. I had one similar years ago (can you tell I miss it?) and have no idea what happened to it but I sure wish I had kept it. Sigh.
Anyway, no plans for Memorial Day here but I do like to take time to pray for all the families of veterans. That quote from JFK is so true!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! Now I am going to be on the lookout for similar dresses and if I spot one I am going to let you know! It is such a comfortable piece and has lots of versatile styling options. I can absolutely tell that you miss your dress! A no-plans holiday weekend is sometimes the best way to spend holiday weekends! All I have planned is the two hour round trip drive tomorrow to get my husband from the airport. I am starting to miss his face and his help! Haha. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

That’s a lovely dress on you Shelbee and I really like the wedges with it! 🙂 It’s interesting seeing what you actually wore after photos too! I take photos of what I wear each day and I don’t change it – although I’ll tkae a jacket or scarf off when I get home of course, but I don’t change the clothes unless I have to chuck them in the wash – sometimes things can get dirty with the kids, haha!

    Thanks for the link up!

Hope you are having a nice week 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Mica! I really like this dress a lot, too, even though it is a bit different from my normal style. I didn’t use to change my outfits after photographing them until this pandemic. Sitting around at home all day, I usually remove all of my accessories except my earrings and put something comfy on my feet. I hear you about clothing getting dirty from the little ones, too! You never know what their filthy little hands will get into and then grab momma’s clothing! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

Red, white and blue is a favorite color combination of mine-I wear it a lot! Love the subtle pattern mix of your outfit, and your new dress is so pretty on you-a perfect style for warm weather. I hope you enjoy a quiet long weekend, and thanks for sharing the interesting facts about flags. I will be remembering our country’s veterens with gratitue and thanks.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Di! This dress and outfit are a bit different from my normal style, but I felt so pretty and feminine in it. Plus warm weather is the best time for cute dresses! There really is something special about red, white, and blue together, isn’t there? Red, white, and black is another favorite combination of mine. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Love your summertime feels with this pretty dress and gorgeous espadrilles. We have a public hol on Mon too but it’s for an tradition called Whitsun, the 7th Sunday after Easter. Most Brits don’t know this and just think it’s ‘the late May Bank Holiday.’ We don’t have a public holiday to commemorate the war dead, but we make a big deal of Remembrance Sunday in November, when poppies are worn and wreaths laid to remember all those who have died in conflicts.
Have a great holiday weekend my friend.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Gail! I was really happy with these bright reds and I am loving this new dress! I enjoyed learning about your Whitsun holiday and Remembrance Day. I am thinking your Remembrance Day is probably similar to the one in Canada since they fall under the British Monarchy? Maybe? I don’t understand all of the monarchy stuff! That Elizabeth and the rest of the Windsor clan really have got a little hold on a bit of everywhere, don’t they?! Haha I hope you enjoy your long bank holiday weekend, my friend!

Shelbee, you look absolutely stunning in this outfit! I’m surprised you weren’t initially sold on the dress, because it really is beautiful on you. The shape is perfect for your shape. I love it! I also love that you’ve shown us how you styled the outfit after the photoshoot too.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Suzy! I think part of why I wasn’t initially sold on it was because I was shopping with my sister and she hates these prairie style midi and maxi dresses. Thank you so much, Mireille! I had forgotten about these red espadrilles so I was pretty excited to rediscover them. And they were perfect with this dress. I really like the square neckline as well. I think it is very flattering, but I could not keep my bra straps from peeking out. I tried like 4 different bras and every single one was showing. It was driving me crazy to the point that I literally had to just accept it or not wear the dress. Clearly I just accepted it because I love the dress! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

We'll be taking it easy here. I got a very interesting letter in our mailbox today. A man whose father grew up in our house, sent us a letter asking if it would be ok to come to our home on Memorial Day and he took the time to tell us of his plans for the day to Memorialize his father. I was thrilled! I'm very much looking forward to hosting him and hopefully helping him on his personal journey of remembering his dad!

Thank you for hosting <3 <3 I'm off to read and comment on other links! Have a fabulous Memorial Day Weekend.

I love that I can find all my geeky interests right at my fingertips. Okay, that letter you received is amazing! And I absolutely love that you are indulging the request and participating in this man’s journey to remembering his father. That is such a beautiful story and one of those times when it is clear to me that the Universe has intervened in some way. And when the Universe speaks, it is really in our best interest to listen to her. I cannot wait to hear about this experience. I do hope you will be able to share some if not all of the details! It’s fun to see your blog styling and your daily alternate styling! Both outfits are really cute! Your facts about flag are really interesting! I noticed that many flags use those colors, but I didn’t realize quite how many! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, Laura! I used to stay in my full blogged outfit all day long until this pandemic. Now I almost immediately remove my shoes and all accessories other than my earrings as soon as I am done taking photos. Unless I actually have somewhere to go (which is very rare), then I will stay fully accessorized until I am home for the day. I had been aware of the popularity of these three colors in flag designs, but did not know just how popular these colors were in reality. I am sure there is lots of color psychology behind it, too, but I did not research it in that much depth! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    Shelbee,

You look amazing and I adore a RWB outfit that doesn’t scream out the color combo but instead just gently shouts it. The pairing of this red print dress with your seersucker blazer makes for a smart look and the espadrille sandals bring it in for Spring/Summer. Well done!

Shelbee, you are practically a Canadian gal in your lovely red and white, those being the colours of our beautiful maple leaf flag! Happy Memorial Day, a day I’m very familiar with, as my city (a tourist town) is usually flooded with Americans this weekend as the big kickoff to our summer season.

We had Victoria Day the previous weekend, a day celebrating Queen Victoria. Bizarrely, the UK does not celebrate this. We have our Remembrance Day on November 11th every year, which honours our military, and our fallen soldiers.

Have a wonderful weekend, and don’t wear yourself out!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Sheila, thanks so much! I am practically Canadian in more ways than just my red and white dress! I live less than 30 miles from the border and I have developed a little bit of an accent after living here for almost a decade. My family and friends back home find it hilarious that I “sound Canadian” sometimes! The UK has a Remembrance Day as well which I assumed would be the same as your Remembrance Day, but maybe not since you celebrate Queen Victoria and they do not. More things for me to geek out about…random holidays in different countries. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

    Ahem! (Kidding. Gently).

Loving all the fun flag facts.
And how about that most unusually shaped flag of Nepal?

Blue and white seersucker always reminds me of my dad. One of his “summer” sport coats was seersucker.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Haha, thanks, Anne! You know I take the photos before I write the words so it doesn’t always occur to me to take the close ups! But I did think of it when I was writing about the necklace and I was like “Oh shoot, I forgot the close up photo of the jewelry. Again!” Must. Work. On. This. And I love that your dad’s summer sport coat was seersucker! There is something even more special and quirkily fun about a man in a seersucker blazer! I have to go have a look at Nepal’s flag now! I hope you are enjoying the weekend, my friend.

You could always do an indoor flat lay, like Sheila of Ephemera. Lay the necklace on top of the dress, zoom in, done. Or my favorite, a messy pile of jacket and dress to show off fabrics, lay necklace on top.

I’m feeling super creative this AM, and I refuse to fritter it away on the computer! Off to go cut something into strips for a Scrappy Square. Maybe I’ll try doing a sweater that is too pilled to sell on Poshmark.

Oh, and if my nudie self portrait is too lewd, I’ll reload a crop. I had cropped it but forgot to Apply it. Oops.

You have a great weekend too! xxox

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh well now, Anne, you are asking me to do more things than I already do! And I am tired and burnt out! Haha. I do love the way Sheila does her flat lays of “all the stuff”! I will try to remember to do that but keep in mind that I rarely can remember what day it is so I am not making any unrealistic promises! I am checking out your nudie selfie post right now and I love it! I got nervous though and thought I had missed your birthday, but now I see that it is in June (the 3rd, correct?) I hope that your creativity is flowing strong this weekend! Have a great one.

Such very cool flag facts. I enjoyed them an learned a few things. So very nice. And here is one for you: The oldest, continuously used national flag is that of Denmark. The current design of a white Scandinavian cross on a red back ground was adopted in 1625 and its square shape in 1748.

Looking so very fresh and summery. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend.

        Big fun with fabric!

        So far, I’ve experimented with
        • stripe knit from overused COVID lounge pants
        • purple satin from an old sewing commission (199
        • sun damaged rayon
        • poplin samples from work
        • poly gauze top that I didn’t like
        • tights that lost their tightness mixed with chambray

Decided I’ll do extended posts on source(s) and process on the Art Blog, because I need to keep that blog active and it’s TMI to post with the final artwork. (Put blog link in “Website”)

Yikes, where did last week go! I’m still playing catch-up from a weekend in the desert! Anyway, Nerd Girl, I loved your story about flags! Like you, when I post things I start to wonder where the heck they came from and I find this so interesting!! You look SO darn cute in this dress and have all the right accessories. I love that you included how you “style down’ your outfits for days spent post-photographing our images for blog posts. SO true! I’m sure we all do it!! Lol!

Darlene, I hope you had an amazing trip to the desert! That sounds like a wonderful getaway. Isn’t it always so great to expand your knowledge on various topics as they come up in your life? I am seriously so grateful for the internet for that reason! I don’t have to go digging through encyclopedias anymore to find the answers I desire! Nerd girls unite!
