“What one does when faced with the truth is more difficult than you’d think.”

Diana Prince, Wonder Woman movie

I wanted to share this post yesterday, but apparently I wasn’t inspired enough by Wonder Woman to get all the things on my list completed! I feel a bit more like Blunder Woman these days than Wonder Woman, but whatever…I just keep trucking along the best that I can.

I was never one of those jubilant little girls who was obsessed with princesses and fairy tales. I was actually quite the opposite. I was a rather melancholic introverted child who was more interested in sports, reading books, or playing quietly by myself with Fashion Plates or Cabbage Patch dolls. But every little girl needs a role model or a hero whether they come in the form of beautiful princesses wearing sparkly gowns or badass superheroes who make bold and powerful statements in very impractical but fabulous clothing.

Back in the Spring of 2019, the Fab 40’s and I celebrated National Superhero Day with outfits inspired by our favorite superheroes. Not wanting to stick to the traditional favorites like Wonder Woman and Cat Woman for that post, I styled an outfit inspired by Zatanna Zatara. While I had great fun with that style challenge, the outfit was much more costumey than one could wear for actual real life activities. But I have been wanting to create a few superhero inspired outfits that one could wear on any regular day and feel empowered simply by channeling a little bit of that superhero that lives inside all of us.

“You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know.”

Antiope to Diana, Wonder Woman movie

Wonder Woman has long been a favorite of mine for lots of reasons. The main reason being that my sister, who is 6 years my senior, has been obsessed with Wonder Woman for as long as I can remember. And as younger siblings often do, I shared my big sister’s passion for Wonder Woman because I wanted to be just like my big sis.

As I just typed that previous paragraph about my big sister, it occurred to me that I don’t think she knows how much she has influenced many decisions in my life that have greatly impacted the path I have traveled this far.

I entered the world of competitive swimming at the very young age of 4 because my sister joined the swim team. She hated it and quit after one summer while I went on to earn a full swimming scholarship to attend college. Eventually, my swimming background landed me a job as an assistant swim coach way back before I had children and that was one of my all time favorite jobs ever.

I began this blog because my big sister pushed me to do it. If not for her, there would be no Shelbee on the Edge. And while my sister prefers to remain out of any kind of spotlight, she is constantly behind the scenes cheering me on and encouraging me to put myself out there. I owe her a huge amount of gratitude.

“If it means interfering in an ensconced, outdated system, to help just one woman, man or child…I’m willing to accept the consequences.”

Wonder Woman #170

Certainly, as sisters do, we can fight and argue and scream at each other in the most impassioned way, but at the end of the day, she really is one of my favorite people ever. In a sense, she is my Wonder Woman and I couldn’t love her more for it. I suppose I should have titled this post “Inspired by My Big Sister” instead, but that maybe is kind of corny. She would think so! So I will leave it at Wonder Woman and tell her to make sure she reads it!

This was actually the outfit I wore on Halloween because I wanted to be festive but not look like I was wearing an actual costume. We invited a few friends over for a small Halloween gathering and ended up joining forces with my next door neighbors who were also having a small Halloween gathering. All the kids ended up together in our adjacent back yards playing all sorts of fun games and filling up on sugary treats. I think we all went to bed Halloween night with terrible tummy aches. Sometimes, you just have to indulge yourself and your kids even if it means a bad belly for one night!

Here is a photo of the silly Halloween treats that I made for them.

Now I want to share a bit about how the outfit came to be. I received this fun Wonder Woman jacket from Dresslily three years ago and I don’t wear it often because it is a bit too big on me especially since I have lost over 20 pounds since I first came to own it. You can see how I first styled it here. Obviously, the jacket was the starter piece for my Wonder Woman outfit.

A red top with a corset belt mimics Wonder Woman’s corset style top. I have a pair of star print jeans that I was considering as a tribute to Wonder Woman’s star print bottoms, but Wonder Woman is so much about showing off her amazing legs that I couldn’t cover mine in denim! So I opted for a denim mini skirt and my favorite black Sheertex tights instead.

Somehow I do not own any kind of boots that resemble Wonder Woman’s, but I really liked how these camel knee high boots represent the hints of gold in Wonder Woman’s outfit as well as bringing out the tan stripes on my jacket. A tan headband wore low on my forehead reminded me a bit of Wonder Woman’s headgear. A big bold gold bracelet and necklace completed the look.

As we were out taking photographs in a local parking deck area, my husband spotted the Wonder Wall and I got so excited! It could not have been a more appropriate back drop for my Wonder Woman outfit. I love when that kind of serendipity occurs. It doesn’t happen often so when it does, I definitely take notice and appreciate the Universe for delivering such a wonderful coincidence!

“I used to want to save the world. To end war and bring peace to mankind; but then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learnt that inside every one of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves—something no hero will ever defeat.”

“We have a saying, my people. Don’t kill if you can wound, don’t wound if you can subdue, don’t subdue if you can pacify, and don’t raise your hand at all until you’ve first extended it.”

Do you have a favorite superhero? Maybe it is an actual superhero or a real person who has inspired you the way only superheroes can. I would love to hear about it in the comments!

Thank you, Michelle! My sister really is one of my very best friends. But that didn’t come without a price. She and I have a joke where we tell each other that we have the best sister in the world. Then we follow with…but the trade off is that we also have the worst sister in the world. Yes, I have those bad sibling relationships as well. Actually, more accurately put, I have two other siblings with whom I have no relationship at all and haven’t for years. But I do still consider myself lucky because I have an amazing big sister. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

Family dynamics are definitely one of the most volatile types of relationships, I think. Because you can’t choose them and people get all caught up in thinking they are stuck with people they despise just because they are family. I do not think that way. Toxic relationships are still toxic whether they are between family members or not. And no one should feel like they have to stay in a toxic relationship. So I definitely understand when family members become estranged.

It’s no wonder, ha ha, that we are such good blogging friends. We are so much alike and have a lot in common. Thank you for those kind words, they are so special to me!
I’m glad you have such a good sister in your life! That’s the kind of people we need in our lives!

I love to be able to tell people about my wonderful friends all over the world! This community is so special to me. After 5 years of doing this, I simply cannot imagine my life without it! Again…thanks to my sister for pushing me to do this. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

Great outfit for Halloween, very wonder woman-esque but not costumey at all! You nailed it and I love the corset with this outfit! Sounds like your kids had a great Halloween, I think all kids really want to do is run around with friends and have fun – that’s the best!
I hope your sister reads your blog and sees the influence she had on you, I never knew she was the one who encouraged you to blog!
Thanks for the link up my friend and have a terrific weekend!

Kellyann, thank you so much for this lovely comment! My kids were not at all disappointed about not getting to go trick-or-treating. They had so much fun and we had plenty of candy! That’s what they really want. Trick-or-treating never sat well with me anyway. There is something so strange to me about knocking on strangers’ doors and asking them for candy. I didn’t even like it as a child! So this was the perfect way to celebrate Halloween, in my opinion. And I will make sure that my sister reads this post! I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well!

My big sister always inspires me too– she’s the one who convinced me to give homeschooling a try! And I started my blog after reading a few entries she had made on her blog (she didn’t keep up with it but I don’t think I would have started mine without following in her footsteps). I’m so glad to have her in my life; even if she does live a few days drive away now and we don’t get to see each other as much as we used to.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Joanne, I love that you have a similar sister relationship! Thank you so much for sharing that with me. My sister is about 4 1/2 hours from me and we do not see each other very often either. Sometimes it is only once a year. But we talk on the phone. A lot. Probably too much! My sister could talk for hours on the phone! It actually drives me a little bit crazy, she never wants to hang up even if we have been on the phone for hours! But I guess that just means that she likes me enough to talk for hours, so I should just appreciate it. LOL I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Debbie, thank you so much for this comment! I just got all choked up! My hormones lately have sent me into this emotional frenzy where I literally cry at everything! Slowly but surely, I am trudging through all the every day mundane boring shit that needs doing and I am learning to cut myself slack when I fall short of my own too high standards! And you, my friend, are my role model for touch, beautiful badassery! Love you, girl!

Sad that the wonder woman jacket is too big, but yet not sad, right? And I think this outfit is fun – my boys would love it too! The camel boots are a fun element of design surprise, which is what I like about your outfits. They are unique, adventurous and cute!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Chrissy, thank you so much! It is like a bittersweet thing when our favorite things become too big! Like when my favorite skinny jeans are suddenly baggy. I love that I have lost the weight to make them baggy, but I also want my skinny jeans to fit properly and don’t want to buy anything else! I do like to add a bit of style adventure to my outfits when I can otherwise I get bored with myself! Haha. I hope you have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

I also have an older sister is happens to be my wonder women as well! She also inspired me to get out there and share my passion for fashion. My sister and I have different likes and hobbies, but as I child I wanted to be just like her. I think have an older sister is a blessing. I would be lost without my sidekick 😉

A special bond! I have 2 brothers and there has not been many years where we have all lived in the same country. I think it was 23 years once before we were all at the same places with my parents for a Thanksgiving. It is harder to keep close bonds with the distance but we try to communicate. This is a cool spin on WonderWoman!

Mireille, thank you so much! Oh wow, I didn’t realize that your family was so geographically dispersed. My sister lives in Pennsylvania which is about a 4 1/2 hour drive and we only see each other about once a year. I have two other siblings whom I haven’t even spoken to in a decade or longer. But you know what they say about families…you can’t pick them! I am super blessed to have one sister who is my best friend. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Hey Shelbee, I love your Wonder Woman look! (And that was a great movie!) It was also fun to hear about your sister and swimming. What a blessing to have a sister relationship like that. And how awesome is the wonder wall!! My parents are some of my real life heroes. I really appreciate the way they’ve chosen to live their lives, all they taught me, and the relationship we have. Thanks for hosting, and have a great weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Marielle, thank you so very much! I really am blessed to have my sister. She is really all the family I have left. So the bond is super strong! I really love that your parents are your real life heroes. I lost my parents at such young ages that they never really had a chance to reach superhero status. But I definitely am a product of my parents! Hopefully, I got the best parts of both, but I am sure I got some of their not so great qualities, too. Ha. I hope you have a blessed weekend!

Hey Shelbee, Great looking Halloween treats! And I love the Wonderwoman quote and style. I have a four and six-year-old who are very much into superhero right now. It’s a toss-up between Wonderwoman and Batgirl.

Looking so very nice. Love the outfit. Jean skirts with tights and boots is perfect.

You sister sounds like an outstanding person like you. It seems like you and her have a great relationship. Sometimes in my weird ass family I wish I had a relationship (or any kind of relationship in my life) like that with my siblings but it is what it is.

Love the quote. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Patrick, thanks so much! Yes, my sister is pretty cool! I mean, she is the ice cream lady and everybody loves the person with the ice cream truck, right?! Haha. My family is crazy weird, too, and my sister is really the only person left whom I have much of a relationship with at all. Family dynamics can be very tricky to navigate! Thanks so much for the feature Shelbee, that has really made my day! I absolutely loved Wonder Woman as a child and pestered my mum to make me a headband and bracelet cuffs out of cardboard.
