I have not shared an Inspired by post since the beginning of January when I featured a thrifted men’s shirt styled as a dress that was inspired by my dear friend Grace of Graceful Rags. I suppose the reason it’s been so long since my last post is that I have been feeling very uninspired lately…as I am sure many of us are as we continue on in this weird, weird world of social distancing, half covered faces, and soul sucking isolation.

Then a few weeks ago, Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style (not Jodie Comer) shared a post, Easy Ideas about Recreating Outfits From a Quirky Fendi Ad, featuring Lesley who found outfit inspiration in the March 2021 edition of InStyle Magazine. Not only was this a super fun post, but it also reminded me of the January 2021 edition of InStyle Magazine that I tucked away in my pile of things to do because I wanted to recreate Jodie Comer‘s Givenchy outfit that was shared prominently on page 1.

I had tucked it away to recreate this outfit when the weather got warmer because there was no way in hell I was going to wear something like this in January in the North Country. Then I had forgotten about it completely until I saw Jodie’s post and was promptly reminded. The few days following Jodie’s post turned out to be mild and warm enough for styling this outfit and then I got bombarded with all sorts of other blogging obligations that I never got to share it. And now as I am drafting this post, it is snowing again. I think I will stay in my sweats all day long and save my sheer lacy things for another day. But I am still going to share the photos with you today.

Everything I am wearing to recreate this designer look was shopped from my closet. Nothing I am wearing is Givenchy or even close to it. But that’s okay. Most of us can’t afford those designer labels anyway. And even those who may occasionally splurge on designer pieces, it is doubtful that we can wear entire outfits created from all high end designer pieces. You can easily combine high end fashion with budget pieces to create an equally interesting and unique street style look. In fact, the only designer piece in my entire outfit is my Coach diaper bag that I bought to use as a work and computer bag over 20 years ago. That is the beauty of higher end pieces…they have much more staying power in your wardrobe.

Now you may be wondering where on earth I would wear an outfit like this other than just down to the train tracks for photos. Well, I personally would wear it on any old day and feel pretty freaking fabulous about it.

A few things appealed to me about this outfit. First was the contrast between the feminine black lace and the more masculine style hoodie. I love combining unlikely styles together to create unique outfits that may leave passers-by either scratching their heads in wonder or appreciating that I don’t look like everyone else.

Another thing that appealed to me was the red socks. You all know how I love over the knee and knee high socks in bright bold colors. Jodie Comer’s red socks with this cool black outfit really struck me and I was fully prepared to style red socks with this outfit. Until the red no longer worked in my favor.

One final thing that caught my attention was the sheerness of the dress. I have always loved sheer pieces. I remember when I was in high school, I begged my mom to make a blazer for me that had sheer sleeves attached to a pinstriped vest. While she was a very skilled seamstress, I think my specifications were a bit out of her skill set and my dream blazer never came to be.

Fast forward 30 years and the fashion industry overwhelms us with choices. I am sure I could probably find that dream blazer that I manifested in my mind if I searched hard enough. But now I don’t think I would really wear a blazer with sheer sleeves. Or maybe I would. I do wear some pretty crazy things sometimes.

I did want to keep my look more similar to Jodie Comer’s but the only hoodie I could find in my closet that fit the way I needed it to over my black lace dress was this vibrant tie dye one from Rosegal. And even this one was not the proper length for me to cover all my parts that require coverage so I had to wear black bike shorts underneath as well. Actually I don’t even think they are bike shorts. They are more like shapewear shorts.

Because I opted for this bright tie dye hoodie instead of all black, the red socks that I wanted to wear just were not going to work. So I narrowed my choices to pink or blue socks eventually settling on the blue because they popped a little brighter beneath the black lace than the pink did. I have styled this hoodie twice on the blog before. Both were very casual outfits styled with jeans and with joggers. So it was fun to dress up this colorful hoodie in a more interesting way.

I have had this sheer black dress from Torrid for a few years. It did come with a black slip to layer beneath it but I don’t think I have ever worn it that way. I almost always layer this dress over jeans or some other interesting combination. And strangely, I don’t think I have ever shared this dress on the blog before.

Just felt like painting the world in a little bit of lace and tie dye.

What do you think of this outfit concoction? Would you ever wear something similar? Or maybe you are just looking at me thinking I’m a little bit crazy. That’s okay, too. Because I am a little bit crazy and I will wear whatever makes my heart sing! And this outfit really does that.

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee

Mireille, thank you so much! This is why I love this blogging community so much. You all are so kind and appreciative of my sometimes crazy styles even if you would not wear them yourself. I feel like that attitude is missing often in real life. It is so important to appreciate all the creative differences among us! It just makes us better people, in my opinion.

Nancy, thank you so very much for this wonderful compliment! I like the word “outrageiness” and think I will add it to my personal vocabulary! I think this is the very first time that I ever copied an outfit from a style magazine. It was super fun! You should try it the next time an outfit in a magazine catches your attention! Yes, please email me soon and let’s set up another video chat! Can’t wait!

I love the creativity of your outifts, this one is no different and how fun to use the magazine as your inspiration. Since I am someone that always likes to blend in (I know…boring) I would not personally wear it, but if it fits your style, then why not!!

Ellie, thanks so much! I really appreciate that! Sometimes when I try to blend in, I completely fail and so I am just now starting to embrace the fact that maybe I was not meant to blend in. I don’t know why it took me over 40 years to get to this point, but better late than never, I guess! And I think your style would definitely still stand out among the masses, my friend! You are always put together in the most adorable ways. It’s your style and it totally suits you!

OMG I’m swooning over here, Shelbee! When I first glanced at the picture, I thought, hmm I’m not brave enough to wear that. But…after reading your post and getting a better look at the outfit, I think I actually would! It’s super refreshing and so different. And even though the dress is sheer, there is nothing showing that shouldn’t be showing! I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!
Right, I’m off to check out Jodie’s post now lol.
Funny thing is, I’ve got a big bunch of Hello Magazines that my friend gave me that I’ve been keeping to see if there is anything there to inspire me!!
    Huge hugs

Suzy, thanks so much! I definitely have all my private bits properly covered! I think some of the sexiest outfits are the ones that cover almost everything but allow one little sexy part to show…my legs in this outfit. Well, it is usually my legs that I tend to show off the most because they are my favorite part of me! You definitely should dive into some of those Hello Magazines and see what inspires you!

Such a cool, fun outfit! Of course you know that I love that sweatshirt! It’s mesmerizing. You did a wonderful job at recreating the outfit from the InStyle. As for whether I would wear something like this – sure! Although, I don’t own any sheer, lacy stuff. Honestly, I’m too lazy to care for them properly, and then there is my lap dog, who might accidentally snag them.

Michelle, thanks so much! It just made my heart smile to know that you would wear an outfit like this! Yay! But since you don’t have any lacy things, you could certainly try a cute sweatshirt over any kind of lightweight flowing garment…like a maxi dress or a long kimono, maybe. I love this sweatshirt so much because of its mesmerizing effect. The center of it reminds me of a black hole and I get totally absorbed in it! I have the same hoodie in browns and purples but the tie dye pattern is not nearly as cool as this one.

I adore it!!! Do you know that this sheer skirt is what I go out every single time to thrift for and never find??!! I’m desperately looking for one in any colour…at this point I”m just gonna make one lol!! Because it’s so versatile and perfect for any look! I do have a dress with the bottom sheer- but I don’t want to upcycle it- I just want that sheerness. Fantastic Shelbee!!!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Lucy, thanks so much! Actually, this is a dress not a skirt! I don’t think I have any skirts like this either and I wouldn’t want to upcycle it to a skirt either. Just use your dress and layer it underneath something to make it look like a skirt! Although, some kind of maxi length sheer skirt would be pretty amazing, too! I have been searching the thrift shops for lacy, ruffly collared blouses, like Victorian-inspired styles, and I cannot find anything. I also love long duster cardigans and kimonos and they are also very difficult to find second hand. I look forward to seeing your new skirt once you make it! Have a fabulous weekend.

Oh wow, that’s a great inspiration outfit, and a stellar interpretation “done Shelbee style”, Michelle. I love sheer as well (I just bought a teal tutu!) and although this isn’t really in my personal wheelhouse, I would do this with a structured blazer and OTK boots vs. thigh-highs. We get stuck in style ruts, and it’s awesome to take inspiration from styled designer looks! Well done!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Sheila! And now you have me thinking of ways to style something similar with otk boots and a structured blazer. I have a few different sheer lacy maxi dresses like this that I am going to play around with to create some alternative styles to this one. I am looking forward to seeing how you style your new teal tutu! I can already picture the brilliant outfit outfit you might create!

Hi, Shelbee – This is inspiring, especially knowing you have more sheer dresses. I bought a sheer ivory embroidered dress once but am giving it up because the neckline is too high (a crewneck.) I would really enjoy finding a sheer maxi as that is my favorite length. Longer sheerness is better than highter sheerness in my opinion. Lol! Your interpretation of the outfit is excellent and unique to you. Thanks for sharing your creative styling ideas – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Angie, thank you so much! I agree with you that longer sheerness is better than higher sheerness! This particular dress has a higher neckline, too. I find most of my sheer things at Torrid but I don’t really ever see them in very many other places where I shop. I hope you can find the perfect sheer maxi dress for you! Have a fabulous week, my friend.
