I know it’s Christmas Eve and all, but we celebrated Christmas last weekend and now I am just relaxing in the afterglow of the exhaustion that comes with holiday festivities. Many of you may be just gearing up for your food prep and putting the last minute touches on your holiday plans. I wish you ease and joy in your preparations and hope that your Christmas Eve is filled with peace and love.

Since I have nothing left to plan or do for this holiday season, we are preparing for a quiet night at home with some egg nog and other holiday sweet treats in front of the television watching Christmas movies. Not sure which ones we will watch yet, but we have Die Hard at the top of our list to introduce to the kids this year! I am also a big fan of Gremlins at Christmas time, but we have watched that film lots of times already.

We are planning a Christmas dinner get together with our best friends tomorrow. Just the four of us and the two of them for a quiet intimate food fest complete with board and card games. Speaking of card games, we have had a million laughs playing Cards Against Humanity (“a party game for horrible people”) and Disgruntled Decks (the military version). These games are highly kid-inappropriate so we are always telling the children they have to stay in another room when we are playing. But they hear us laughing hysterically and they want to be part of that action.

And then we found Kids Against Maturity (“a fun family party game where being the worst is the best”). OMG. It might be funnier than the adult version. And it is encouraging my 7 year to actually want to read out loud to us! This child of mine despises reading (it breaks my heart), but I finally found something where he wants to read because when it is your turn to read in this game, you get all the laughs and he does like to be the clown, the jokester, the funny guy, at any type of gathering.

But enough about all that. I really wanted to share this festive outfit with you for Christmas Eve. Not only does it incorporate traditional holiday colors and prints, but it is insanely comfortable for a relaxing holiday spent at home.

About a month ago, my dear friend Lucy of Confessions of a Montreal Styling Diva shared her post, Fall Scarves: Go Big-Go Gorgeous! This post featured Lucy’s unique and creative styling of some beautiful scarves from Bellelily. In particular, I was drawn to the way Lucy styled her plaid wrap scarf as a skirt over a pair of leggings with red cowboy boots. As soon as I spotted these images, I immediately pinned this outfit to my Outfits to Copy board.

I knew I had all of the essential pieces to recreate Lucy’s look, but I was unsure how this scarf trick would work on my frame. I have to say that I was not at all displeased with the final outcome. Since I was taking photographs outdoors, I did add a winter white moto jacket for an extra layer of warmth which turned out to not offer me very much warmth at all. I suppose I could have chosen a heavier coat, but sometimes a girl has to sacrifice comfort for style and the moto jacket worked the best out of my extensive outerwear collection.

And now a bit about my friend Lucy. I am not certain when our paths crossed in blogland because I have been in this eternal time warp, but as soon as they did cross it was like a magical explosion of sequins and pattern mixes and mutual sartorial respect for one another. She is a woman who is unafraid to express herself through her creative and eclectic style choices. She pays no heed to fashion rules that try to dictate what women of a certain age should and should not wear. She is authentically and genuinely true to her inner styling diva!

In addition to being super fashionable, Lucy is also one of the kindest, most supportive, enthusiastic women I have encountered not only in the world of blogging but in my life ever. An unkind word never crosses her keyboard as she lights up the internet with abounding joy and a light that shines bright into an often dark and unkind world.

I also love that Lucy shares my passion for thrifting and was super excited when she agreed to join me and Nancy when we launched our Thrifty Six group a few months ago. She never disappoints regardless of the style challenge presented. And we have so much fun in this little group. It is a fabulous collaboration of amazing women!

Lucy has been at this blogging game for over seven years. She uses her space to share all the beautiful things that she loves and that bring her joy. In an effort to spread that joy, she includes all sorts of posts from fashion to art to those pure moments of excitement that make this life worth living. Lucy splits her time between being a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an artist, a teacher, and a stylist. She lives in Montreal, Quebec, which is just a short 3 hour drive from me. So once this darn pandemic lets up and we can travel across the Canadian/American border, we will definitely be getting together for some serious girl time!

Gosh ain’t I stupid! I gave away a similar scarf because it was to huge to wear as one! Jee, what a bummer because I looooove how you created a skirt of it! I like the high low thing a lot. Those boardgames sound such fun, I am a huge fan of boardgames. Have a great Christmas my dearest blog friend!!

Nancy, thanks so much, my friend! I used to wear scarves as skirts about 20 years ago. I worked in an investment office and I remember all the girls in the office wanted me to show them how to do it! Then I quite forgot about this little styling trick until Lucy’s post. It is a super fun way to style a scarf! And now you know for the next time you end up with a too big scarf! So you’re not stupid at all, you just hadn’t learned of this trick yet! Merry Christmas to you, my dearest blogging friend!

You did a great job re-creating Lucy’s look, such a super idea too with so many big scarves! Red looks so good on you and I love those boots.
My boys don’t enjoy reading either – it makes me crazy. They used to read for school when they participated in reading challenges but somehow the joy never spilled over to real life. I am hopeful that one day they will re-discover the joy of a good book!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! This was a really fun outfit to recreate! I am loving red so much lately! I am wearing a red plaid poncho right now as I type this. Tee hee. And I do hope my boys will eventually find the same joy in a good book like I do. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, my friend!

    Merry Christmas Eve!

Wish you were here with me in Iowa and we’d fire up a ‘smokie treat’ to bring in the Holidays!

Super cute and well done! Very festive! Scarf as a skirt…, I need to pin this idea. Not that I have many scarves.

Our group of friends enjoys Cards Against Humanity. When we lived in LA, we’d get together in an English style pub to play. There was always someone in the group who’d say, “I can’t read this in public!” and another who would grab the cards and read for the shy. LOL! So cool there is a Cards Against Maturity for kids.

Thanks so much, Michelle! I used to wear scarf skirts about 20 years ago and then had forgotten about this styling trick until I saw Lucy’s outfit. It is a fun way to get creative with wardrobe pieces. I have never played CAH in public, but sometimes it’s difficult to read the cards in front of certain people as well! Haha. The kids’ version is very poop-centric…because when is a poop joke not funny to a kid?! Even an overgrown adult kid! Fun stuff. We all need a bit more laughter these days and if a silly card game does that, then let’s play!

Is anybody commenting on the boots? they are the best! this outfit is great warmthwise as well, I imagine, as it creates an extra layer of wooliness.
Wow, if you are so close to Canada, I would take every chance i get to visit!

Aw, Lucy, thank you so much! You are amazing and I had such a fun time putting together this outfit and this post! We must keep spreading kindness in all the ways that we can lest this whole world really turns to shit! I am really looking forward to a Canadian adventure to meet you and some other amazing friends I have in your beautiful country. So close, yet so far away right now! I adore this outfit – what an inspiration the original by Lucy is! I would also copy this look (I covet your embroidered cowboy boots, Shelbee!).

I LOVE Cards Against Humanity – we have played it with teenagers, my mom (in her 70s) and L’s brother and mom (in 60s and 70s, nearly 80), and it never fails to make us all howl with laughter.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you so very much, Sheila! Lucy is such a style inspiration to me in the same fun way that you are! OMG, we so howl with laughter when we play CAH! And when we get together with my husband’s Army friends and play the Army version….oh the laughter that happens then. I don’t even understand half of it, but the way these guys (and some gals) get cackling is so funny!

Not sure how I have missed this post but I have been taking it easy with linking up and spotting with my blog reading over the school break! First of all: what a great recreation (once again!) and you look fabulous in this outfit! I need to get back to playing board games with the boys. Lately the teen and I have watched all of the avenger movies together but now we need something else to bond over. He wins any game we play so it can get frustrating lol!

Thanks so much, Mireille! This was really fun to recreate because it is so outside the box. Lucy is always great for unique style inspiration! My kids win all the games we play as well. I am always the big loser and then they get mad at me on the rare occasion that I do win, I get excited and do happy dances. Then they yell at me and tell me that I am being a sore winner! LOL. Kids. I hope you can find some new games to plan with your teen. Wishing you a blessed new year, my friend.
