Once all the holiday hoopla dies down and the reality of the very long winter that still lies ahead sets in, I often find myself feeling rather melancholic for the entire month of January. Adding insult to injury, of course, is this particular January when there is no apparent end in sight to all the things that have bugged me all the past year long.

But perspective and gratitude are my focus words for the year 2021, so I will not indulge my burning urge to vent and scream and cry and throw rage at the wind until I feel better. Fueling such fires never comes to any sort of beneficial end anyway. However, once my mind enters a negativity vortex, it is strenuous, tedious, and exhausting to find my way out of it. Rather than fight until drop, I am going to try a different approach and just let myself be absorbed in it instead…but only for a few days.

Until then, I am going to keep my words here light and frivolous. So let’s just focus on how to style denim overalls for cold weather. I shot these photos back at the end of November but never got around to sharing them. Then at the beginning of December, Carrie of Curly Crafty Mom shared a post about styling overalls for the winter. The timing of Carrie’s post made me chuckle since I had already created an outfit inspired by her that was published the very next day, Pairing a Colorblock Cardigan with a Pattern. It all just goes to show that great minds share great style. Check out Carrie’s overalls styled for winter…

Keeping in mind that I had already photographed my overalls outfit before ever seeing Carrie’s outfit, the sartorial similarities were too many to ignore. We both wore sweaters, wedge ankle boots, and pom pom hats for our cold weather overalls style. Granted all the colors and such are different and I added the extra layer of a duster cardigan on top, merely showing different options to create a similar look from things that you already have in your closet.

I have to admit that as much as I like the long cardigan over the overalls, it definitely is not the most practical of styling tricks. It sure does make using the bathroom a bit troublesome when you have to remove one layer than get out of the bib part of the overalls only to have to put it all back together again, perfectly tucked and layered.

While I have never been one to object to the sacrifice of comfort and practicality in the interest of fashion and style, sometimes and somethings maybe just aren’t worth it. Practicality and comfort will always win in those situations. I am still on the fence, however, when it comes to overalls in general…ostensibly cute vs. comically impractical…which way do I go?

From a comfort standpoint, overalls are not so bad. They provide warmth and durability for a variety of different activities. They are a timeless classic in the world of fashion, making prominent resurgences into the spotlight ever decade or so. The traditional style of denim overalls has remained fairly consistent with each revitalization of this fashion trend making it easy to wear the same pair from 40 years ago and still be completely in style.

If you haven’t saved your denim overalls from decades long gone, you can invest in a quality pair that will last you for decades to come. How do you style your overalls for cold weather? Do you ever sacrifice comfort and practicality for style?

    Very honored to be featured!
It’s a melancholic time Shelbee, short dark days and with total lockdown for a few weeks nothing much to look forward to. I admire your attitude in allowing yourself to experience the darker feelings rather than suppressing them with fake jollity. Love your styling of the overalls, I always adore a bit of burgundy/berry shades, and
a mighty fine pair of booties!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Gail, thanks so much, my friend! Oy, yesterday was a day when I really just embraced all the negative feelings and let some of the anger go in a grand way. It was super cleansing! January always gets me down in the beginning so I will have to keep doing the things that bring me joy…like creating fun outfits…until we make it to spring. I think this spring might be when our days finally become a bit brighter. Fingers crossed!

And now I have Come on Eileen in my head for the rest of the day! Thanks a lot! Lol. But I love the look, you styled it very well! Great boots!

  • mireille

It has been quite a while since I wore overalls and I think mine were shorts overalls and also a minidress overalls. I do love how both of you styled yours. It looks cool with the cardigan and scarf but I could see getting annoyed with it when going to the bathroom. I remember once not being carefully with a long kimono…
Winter in the south isn’t bad as we get a lot of sunny days usually but I get the feeling: right now seems a lot of people I know are getting sick, thankfully not bad cases but still… boys are back in school which i think is good for them. The break sure was nice and thankfully there are several long weekends ahead until spring break in april.

Thanks so much, Mireille! I laughed out loud at your kimono incident! I cannot even count how many times long flowy clothing pieces have found themselves dipped in toilet water! Ha. So gross! So I usually end up taking off all sorts of layers every time I use the bathroom. So tedious! And now I want a minidress overalls style! How cute! I hope you all stay safe and healthy, my friend. My kids were back to school this week and we get notices every single day about new covid cases in the district. I am already looking forward to winter break in February!

Looking very nice for 2021. Love how you styled the overalls. Also, I noticed the view of where you shot. It is so very beautiful.

Thanks for hosting and use those negative feelings you have for good. That is what I am trying to do these days.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Patrick, thanks so much! That view is my little city from the lookout point in the park. I have been trying to keep my perspective in check these days and shift the negative into positive. I do think I need a project to occupy my mind so I think I might paint my cloffice this weekend. I hope you are well, my friend, and staying as positive as one can!

“The traditional style of denim overalls has remained fairly consistent with each revitalization of this fashion trend making it easy to wear the same pair from 40 years ago and still be completely in style.” This is so true! Even more so than jeans because jeans come in such different cuts from skinny to bootleg, etc., and then there is the high-rise (high-waisted) and low-rise (low-waisted) too. It’s interesting how high-rise jeans came back into fashion. I think they make sense for a woman’s figure, especially after having kids.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Tina! When I wrote that sentence I did have in mind how the styles of denim do change so much. And they make overalls in skinny styles and drop crotch and all sorts of other trendy things, but the traditional styles are just as relevant today as they were 40 years ago. Oh, the low rise jeans trend from my college years! It was cool to wear body suits with your jeans low on your hips so you could see hip skin! LOL High waisted are definitely so much better!

Oh my gosh, it has been some time since I put overalls on lol. I was probably in my 20’s. You and Carrie both look fab wearing them. Happy New Year Shelbee, hope you had a wonderful time.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Nora! I definitely feel like I am channeling my inner teenager when I wear overalls! Just having fun with style to get through these trying times! Wishing you and your family all the best in the new year, my friend.

I’m with you—January is my least favorite month. The holidays are over, nothing exciting happens, and no one is any fun because they’ve all made self-punishing New Year’s resolutions like not drinking or going on a diet. The good news is that things start to get better in February—Presidents’ day weekend, Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year—and then March comes and it’s almost springtime! Hang in there 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Cheryl! January has always tormented me because my father died on January 22. In an effort to make the month a bit brighter, Jeff and I got married on January 23 so I would have something happy to focus straight through that dreadful death day anniversary. It was a great idea in theory and then in practice, the Army has taken Jeff away nearly every winter so we have only spent 3 out of 11 anniversaries together. This year we will be together for the 4th time, but the celebration will obviously have to be done lockdown style. But I am grateful to at least have him in the same place as I am for our special day! So I am focusing on that to get to the end of the month! Bring on the spring time then!

  • Midlife and Beyond

Yes, we are certainly living in strange times – all trying to make sense of this situation and get through it as best we can, the time of year isn’t helping of course. We are once again in lockdown here in the UK – let’s hope that by the Spring things will begin to improve. I was just writing a new post about dungarees. I had a pair in my twenties and haven’t worn them since. I got a new pair for Christmas (which I have to admit to picking myself). I was a little worried at first in case I was too old to wear them (that whole mutton thing). Then I thought “what the hell”. They are so comfortable and I love them. You look fabulous in yours and I love the boots you’re wearing with them. Happy New Year to you here’s to lighter, brighter days Shelbee. xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Alison! I have been reading about the UK lockdowns which are much more extreme than what I have to deal with here, but even with more freedoms to move about, there is really no where for me to go anyway. So I have basically been in full lockdown mode since the very beginning! And the long winter and less daylight really gets me down as well. But I must keep the proper perspective since I know that all things come to pass and we go through dark times as well as times of abundant light.

I love that you decided to toss out any silly age appropriate rules and gifted yourself some dungarees! I bet they are absolutely adorable on you! Wishing you and your family a very healthy and happy new year!

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

Aww, you are too sweet to share me again on here! I had never had a long pair of overalls before until I got that pair and I just love them. And, they’re actually really comfortable! I love the pops of burgundy in your outfit, I swear you have a pair of boots/shoes in every color! Ha! I love the duster/long cardi and that view is lovely, too in your photos. I love a good pom in the winter, which is new for me this year… I like to wear them around the house lately to get extra cozy and warm! I always get a little down after the holidays, too with two months of winter left. Lately the news has been making me even a little more down, I really need to stay off it, esp before bed!!!

    Carrie
    curlycraftymom.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Carrie, thank you so much! Oh my gosh, I only just got on the pom hat bandwagon myself. I wear hats around the house all day long as well because I am always so cold. A hat really does keep your body warmth in! As soon as I take mine off, I get a terrible chill. I am really dreading the long winter months ahead of us. It happens every January. Although this year my husband will be home for our anniversary (January 23) which will only be the 4th year out of 11 that we are able to be together. His job has always taken him far away every winter. So I do have that look forward to…although our celebration will just spent at home with the kids. As for the news, I only check it about once a week because I just can’t take it anymore! Hang in there, my friend. We will keep supporting each other all the way through this mess.

I absolutely love this outfit, Shelbee! You look beautiful. 🙂 Wishing you a bright, beautiful new year full of magic, my friend. I love both of your words for this year, they are both great ones. I have adopted gratitude as well, it is so important and really is a game changer for my mindset! Praying things get so much lighter for you. It’s tough just coming out of 2020 and this winter weather to boot, but we are going to come out on the other side SO much stronger and happier – I have no doubt.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week, friend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Ashley, thank you so very much for your kind words! I feel like I am in a never ending battle with perspective. It slips away so easily these days that I am constantly having to remind myself to shift back to the good places and focus on gratitude. Fingers crossed that we all emerge in in tact and soon! Wishing you a new year filled with much health and happiness and joy, my friend!

I had some a couple of years ago but the connector piece broke and I couldn’t fix it. It did love them while I had them though! Yours are super cute on you! I love the burgundy you paired with them and those wedge booties!

  • Darlene

To be honest, I mostly choose comfort over style but my goal is to combine the two! Lol! You look super cute in your overall outfit–those booties!!–and I thought Carrie does, too! Yes, January tends to be that LONG dark month, and of course, this year it’ll be even longer. I’m focusing on optimism for this year, but I’m afraid it will take some time!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thanks so much! The perfect outfit really would be a combination of both comfort and style without compromising either. Ugh…January! Optimism is a very difficult concept for me these days, but I continue to focus on it so it doesn’t get too far out of my sight. We will get through this just like we have the past 10 months because we are a species built to endure all sorts of things!

Thanks so much, Michelle! Every time I wear outfits that make using the bathroom more tedious than necessary, I question my style choices! And it always seems the days I wear such things are the days that my bladder becomes very active and seems to shrink in size. Haha.

Thanks so much, Jess! I bet you rocked those overalls! They are fun and perfectly retro but still modern and I feel like a kid when I wear them! That’s not always a bad thing either. I can’t imagine that you look silly in a beanie! Maybe play around with different hairstyles, like pigtails or something, under the hat. I find that certain hats require my hair to be a certain way to look decent. Worth a try since you already have the hat! Wishing you the very best in the new year, my friend!

That is a perfect word for the new year, Linda! I have definitely been struggling with maintaining optimism. I am becoming a more and more cynical and pessimistic by the day. And I do not like it! Must shift back! Thanks for the reminder and the reinforcement that it can be done…we can remain positive even in the midst of so much negativity. And I bet you rock a pair of overalls like no other!
