Y’all remember the movie Clueless, right? The 1995 coming of age comedy film starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz. Did you know that the storyline of Clueless was inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, the matchmaking guru who finds her own true love in unexpected places on her continued mission to find the perfect romantic matches for her friends?

Did you also know that Jane Austen is my favorite author ever? I have read everything she has written multiple times and studied her works in depth with one of the premier Jane Austen experts in all of academia. Gosh, how I do miss those days spent immersed in books and learning with nothing more to focus on than gaining more knowledge.

Life has certainly changed in dramatic ways over the past 25 years since I graduated from college. How in the world did two and half decades fly by so quickly?

But there is something really special about those formative and early adult years that seem to gain a stronghold on our hearts when it comes to things like pop culture and fashion. Since the debut of Clueless in 1995, it has continued to gain a cult following and is considered one of the best teen films of all time.

Any girl growing up in the 1990’s with a penchant for style quickly fell in love with Cher’s wardrobe and fashion choices. She was bold and eclectic and always stayed true to herself (until, of course, matters of love were at hand, then she got all out of sorts)!

There was something about this outfit that reminded me of Cher and all the trendiest fashions of the 1990’s from the mini dress to the cropped plaid jacket to the chunky knee high boots. This outfit is quite literally exactly how I dressed in 25 years ago.

I recently found this black knit mini dress on a thrifting adventure. It is by Zara and I think I paid $9 for it. Then I ripped out the side seam trying to get the darn thing on! It has been added to my ever growing mending pile for now.

I found this purple checked cropped jacket at Target a few years ago. I have worn it twice on the blog…here and here.

The boots are a new acquisition from DSW. My local store is going out of business and the sales are phenomenal. These boots are Steve Madden and were only a little bit on sale. But there was one pair left and it was my size. That is enough evidence for me indicating that the universe intended for me to have them! So have them I will. I can’t seem to find them online, but the shorter Chelsea version of these boots is really cute, too. They are insanely comfortable and I am really loving the lug sole in contrast with the super sleek tighter fit around the calf. I have worn them every day since I got them. I think these boots may be the only thing that will make me sad when spring finally arrives as I will have to put them away until fall.

Well, that is all I have for today. Daylight Savings always leaves me out of sorts for the first week until my body adjusts to the silly time change. I really struggled just getting these words on the screen!

What a cute retro dress! I get the clueless vibe with the jacket too, it’s very cute and that was a great movie! 🙂

Hope your week is going well! It’s a rainy one here!

  • Pamela

Love that little jacket, so chic. I am constantly in awe of your thrift shops in the US. Over here they are either complete rubbish or incredibly expensive for anything even nearing decent! Or perhaps you’re just the best thrift shopper ever!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Pamela, thank you so much! We do have some pretty fabulous thrift shops here, but they are filled with junk as well. You have to dig and hunt for the good stuff! I actually just bought another really cute Zara dress and when I brought it home, I noticed a gigantic hole in the fabric at the back of the skirt. So I am not the best thrift shopper ever. Haha. I need to pay closer attention to these things! The hole is far enough down that I may be able to just chop the dress into a mini one. We’ll see!

Clueless is mine and my daughters go-to chick flick. I might have to watch that today. She’s having a friend over for the day with pizza so that should be a great idea. Also – that dress and black tights with boots is HOT! It reminds me of Cady walking down the stairs from Mean Girls about to join her party. It looks great on you 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Natalie, thank you so much! I never even thought of Mean Girls, but this outfit definitely has some Cady and Mean Girl vibes, too. I need to watch Clueless again this week as well! I hope you enjoy your pizza and movie day!

What a fun Clueless inspiration outfit! And loving the tall boots! They were definitely meant to come home with you! Hate hearing your local DSW is closing! Ours is about an hour away so I don’t get to stop in there too often, but hopefully they aren’t closing it!! I always like to stop in when visiting that town.

    Thanks for hosting the linkup!

Thank you, Ellie! These boots are seriously so great! From what I read, our local store is closing due to a lease dispute so I am sure yours is still there! We have nowhere to shop for shoes here anymore. It makes me sad. I mostly have to order online. I hope you have a wonderful day, my friend.

Thanks so much, Jess! I kind of threw this all together on a whim and I felt so sassy in it, it made me smile! I definitely got the 60’s vibe, too, along with some 80’s and 90’s! Spring is coming. I can smell it in the air!

I am a child of the 80’s and more into John Hughes-LOL. Wow, looking so very cute in that dress with the boots and black tights. Add in the way you did your hair you look cute but also fierce. I am starting to sound like a fashion reviewer-lol.

Loving the vibe your small town. Very nice background.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful Tuesday.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Patrick! You do sound like a fashion reviewer! I love it. Being a few years younger than you, I fall into that cross decade generation where my coming of age years happened in the late 80’s and early 90’s. So I guess I can say I am both a child of the 80’s and the 90’s. I definitely like the teen films from the 80’s better (e.g. John Hughes) but I like the fashion from the 90’s better! I hope your week is off to a great start!

Would you believe it if I told you that I’ve never actually watched Clueless? I know, I know…insane, right?! But of course I know all about it, and the fashion aspect and the Jane Austen slant! I can totally see where you’re coming from with your fabulous outfit. But I’m also getting a little bit of Austin Powers too! lol! It’s the shape of that dress, it’s got a 60s twist, don’t you think? You look freaking gorgeous, you must’ve been a bit chilly though lol
    Huge hugs
    Suzy xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Suzy! When I put the dress and boots together, I totally got the 60’s mod vibe. I feel like the cropped jacket transformed it to the 90’s! You absolutely must watch Clueless at least one time…if for no other reason than to see all the fabulous costumes! And, yes, I was completely frozen by the end of this photo shoot! It was so windy, too, which was just adding insult to injury.

I can’t even remember what that movie was about! Love your hair like that(just because it doesn’t show your gorgeous long envious making hair). Lol. Love that jacket with the dress!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Nancy! The movie is about Cher, who is a high school kid in Beverly Hills, California. She befriends the new girl in school and tries to make her popular. And all the teen drama and comedy builds from there. But the clothing is so much fun! It is worth watching just for that!

Thanks, Lucy! I have always approached footwear more like it was art. There is something in the shapes and styles and prints and colors that really capture my attention. If I could install a high shelf around my entire house, I would showcase my shoes like wall art!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Nora! Clueless is a really cute movie about Cher, a Beverly Hills high school student who befriends a new student in an attempt to make her popular. It is a typical 1990’s high school comedy movie. But the costumes are so much fun! You should definitely check it out even if it is just to see the wardrobe.

What a find, these boots! And your downtown looks very much like what i recently read in one of Bill Bryson’s books.

  • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

I can barely remember that movie, it has been so long ago! Ha!! All I know is you look so cute in that dress! It hits you everywhere perfectly. That jacket goes great with it, too and gives it more of a polished/professional look. You are so good with changing up your hairstyles!! I love the high pony!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you so much, Carrie! I might need to rewatch the movie this week! I was loving the silhouette of this dress as well. It is a little tight which is why I split the side seam out. But it’s easy enough to fix. I really like my hair in the high pony as well, but it causes headaches by the end of the day!

Another inspired outfit! You look adorable in everything, Shelbee! I love Jane Austen–Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility…I never made the connection between Emma and Clueless but now it makes perfect sense!

  • Shelly

Okay…this will shock your socks off but I’ve never watched Clueless. I feel like there was an entire section of the 90s that I missed when I was having babies and finsihing my degree. I think I was without cable TV for several years too. That dress was a great find…hope you are able to mend it!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I am a little shocked, Shelly! LOL But I definitely can relate to the time periods in my life when I was in school and/or having babies. There was not much time for anything like movies and television! My oldest son spent his entire first year of life lying on my chest while I read psychology books aloud to him! I should be able to repair the dress easily enough. I should get around to it this weekend, hopefully. Have a fabulous day, my friend!

  • Sheila (of Ephemera)

Those are absolutely fabulous boots, Shelbee, and I love that sweet sweater dress – you are rocking this look and I can tell you are feeling sex-ay! Woo!

I love “Clueless!” Paul Rudd, the clothes, Cher, the whole Emma thing (although I have not read anything by Jane Austen, ever). My 90s style was tall OTK books, skater dresses (with spandex shorts under them, of course!) and long straight hair with bangs/fringe. That was only if I was dressing up, though – most of my style in the 90s was rather sad and pathetic. It wasn’t a good era for me, fashion-wise.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Sheila! I was definitely feeling all sorts of sassy and sexy in this outfit! My husband’s jaw kind of dropped when I came down the stairs wearing this! I love when that happens. OMG, I had quite forgotten about the 90’s skater dresses with spandex shorts underneath! It reminds me of this one outfit I wore on a date the summer after my freshmen year in college (1993). I was a lifeguard at a country club and I had a date with one of the tennis pros (oh swoon…he was hottie and about 12 years older than me). I wore a white sleeveless skater dress that had the most obnoxious gigantic bright pink polka dots all over it. Of course, I wore black spandex shorts underneath. And sneakers…because he was going to try to teach me how to play tennis! (He failed.) Thinking back on it now, I realize how much I must have stood out on the tennis court and in the diner we went to for nourishment after our lesson! Haha. And I am sure that your style was not sad and pathetic by 90’s standards!
