Adventures in Thrifting Part 9: Creative Mending & Link Up On the Edge #241

Mending pile, Shelbee on the Edge
My teeny tiny mending mound…nothing like Anne’s Mending Mountain!

I did it! I finally tackled my ever growing pile of mending and I got straight to the bottom of the pile in just a few short days. The bulk of my mending work was spent on this thrifted polka dotty dress from Zara.

My local Salvation Army thrift store has been receiving excess and damaged products from Zara in abundance recently. There is one huge long clothing rack that is filled with just this brand. Most of the items still have the tags on them and are in brand new condition. Some of the items with tags do have minor damage like spots or perfume odors or slight tears that are easily mendable. In fact, three of my newly thrifted Zara dresses required mending. I split the armpit and neckline seams in this black mini dress when I was putting it on and then I did the same thing to this black bodycon dress, but just in the one armpit. Easy peasy to stitch those things up like new.

But this black and white dotty dress is an entirely different story. I was drawn to the prairie style of this dress and I have a hard time resisting polka dots, too. I bought this before the fitting rooms were opened in the thrift shop so I didn’t try it on until I had brought it home and laundered it. Imagine my disappointment when I finally did put it on and noticed a giant gaping rip right in the middle of the arse. I am not certain if I purchased it that way or if it tore in the wash. Either way, I really liked this dress and wanted to find a way to wear it.

Shelbee on the Edge, Mending
I forgot to take a photo of the damage before I started the repairs. But here is a terrible picture of the giant gaping hole from the inside after I patched it.

At first I considered just chopping the bottom of the dress off right above the giant hole and making it a mini dress. But that seemed like it might ruin the entire silhouette of the dress. And then I started noticing some other compromised places on the dress like little threadbare spots in the fabric and some torn seams where the tiers are attached to the skirt part of the dress. As I noticed more and more damage, I realized that this definitely did not happen in the wash. I was just a bad thrifter that day and did not properly inspect the garments that I was purchasing. Note to self…check for damage more thoroughly before buying.

At this point, repairs to make this dress wearable and functional really seemed very far beyond my skill level. I don’t have a sewing machine and I am not the most diligent or careful when hand sewing. Basically, my mending and sewing skills are limited to sewing on buttons and stitching up opened seams at the same level of expertise as I was when I first learned how in middle school sewing classes. Not wanting my lower level talents to discourage me though, I was willing to give it a try before completely giving up on this cute dress.

So I got to brainstorming and remembered that I kept all the denim scraps from the jeans I created for Absurdity Day this past November. I started cutting random shapes from the denim to make some whimsical yet functional patches to cover all the damaged spots on this dress. Once I pinned the denim patches in all the necessary spots, they were clustered in a really weird way. So I cut more denim shapes and spaced them out around the dress to make it look more like a purposeful design than functional mending. I guess that is how you go from regular repairs to creative mending.

It took three evenings of sewing to attach all of the patches. By day two, I was really questioning my abilities and my patience to finish this thing out. Was a $10 preloved dress really worth all of this work? I do find hand sewing to be a very therapeutic activity and so I persisted with the hand stitching every night while the family sat around watching our evening television shows. I felt wonderfully accomplished when I sewed on that very last patch and slipped the dress over my head.

Once I had it on, some of the necessary patches looked so oddly placed. But they were necessary so I had to have them placed were they were. Fortunately, the oddness was mostly on the back of the dress so I added a newly thrifted Ralph Lauren engineer stripe denim jacket. I was so excited about this lovely preloved find from my local consignment shop. I paid $18 for it. It reminds me of this one that Rena has and styles frequently in the most wonderfully creative ways! I am really glad that I added this fun denim jacket to my collection.

This is the pin that my mother wore on her wedding day. Then I wore it on my wedding day. It is one of my most cherished items.

Overall, I am really pleased with my dotty, patchy dress. I am certain it is the only one like it the whole world and that makes it just as special as each of us are…one of kind, damaged and patched, and eclectically beautiful. Do you think it was worth my time and effort and minimal skills to give new life to a poor old ripped up dress? I do!

Wow Shelbee, what a great idea and I love that you made this dress so uniquely yours with the denim patches! When I first saw the photos of you, I immediately liked the blue on the dress and then reading of how and why the blue is there made me appreciate it even more. I cannot sew. At all. Not even a button – I make a complete and utter mess so I am super impressed with your mending abilities! And how precious is that pin? What a keepsake.
Have a super weekend my friend!

Kellyann, thank you so much! It is such a cute dress, I just couldn’t give up on it because of a few rips and tears. And you absolutely made me feel better about my novice sewing skills! So thanks for that, too! I can sew a button on so that it will never ever come loose again! Are you watching the space shuttle launch right now? It is launching to the ISS in about 10 minutes! I am watching live on Facebook right now. All excited at 5:30 in the morning! Haha.

Oh how awesome! I am so glad that you got to watch it! It arrives at the ISS tomorrow morning around 5:00 a.m. so I will definitely be awake for that! I love to watch the change of command on the ISS, too. Have a great weekend, my friend!

I’m verry impressed. At first I thought it was a floral dress! It looks fantastic. Where in heavens name did you find the patience to do that? And what a lovely pin. That is a treasure! Have a great weekend love!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Nancy! I am not sure where my patience came from, but it was a relaxing little project that kept me pleasantly occupied for a few days! And now I have cute unique dress from my efforts! Haha. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Shelbee, you are a CREATIVE GENIUS! I absolutely love what you’ve done to fix the dress (which is a gorgeous dress, btw, I can totally see why you wanted to buy it), it looks like it was meant to be like that — a proper quirky dress for a quirky lady!! Absolutely brilliant!

While I have some basic sewing skills I just don’t have the patients to sew, but glad you took on the challenge as it looks great! Love how you topped it off with the jacket. Your mom’s flower pin is so pretty and a perfect addition!

A few months ago I found a gorgeous cashmere sweater at Goodwill. Was so excited about it. Then at home while I was hand washing it, I noticed several small holes on the back of the sweater. Honestly I wish I had taken the time to fix them up but I think knit sweaters are hard to fix and since there were so many holes and I decided to throw it out. Still keeping an eye out for this sweater on poshmark/eBay but haven’t found it yet in my size.

    Thanks for hosting the linkup!

Thanks so much, Ellie! What a bummer about your cashmere sweater! I have a friend who makes the most amazing mittens from cashmere and other wool sweaters. I wish I had that talent because you know how I love to keep my hands warm and cozy and stylish. I think I want to start watching some sewing tutorials and maybe even get myself a small sewing machine. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I admired your perseverance at resuscitating this dress! I have an ever mounting and neglected pile of mending, too. I think it is definitely worth the effort to repair a garment if you love it, no matter how you aquired it. And l adore the outcome-perfect for a prairie style dress! You have a one-of-a-kind wearable work of art you can be proud of. Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for sharing!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Di, thanks so much! I do love that it is now a one of a kind dress and I love it so much because it was created from my own personal vision and my own hands…well at least the patchy parts are. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

I can only sew buttons and very small rips so this week I had my mom hem a pair of wide legged pants for me since I really was not going to wear them at their current length. She used to sew outfits for me when I was a kid. I actually thought that is how the dress was before you explained about the patches. It really looks original and pretty!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Mireille, thanks so much! I am glad that your mom was able to hem your pants so you can wear them! My mom used to do all of the sewing and repairs for me. She was a decent seamstress and made most of our clothes when we were young. She was teaching me how to sew and make clothing for myself when she passed away. I held onto half finished garments for a decade before I realized I was never going to finish them and so I donated all the stuff I had a few years ago…the fabrics and the patterns and all of it. Now I wish I had kept everything! Oh well. Have a lovely weekend, my friend!

    Hi Shelbee,

Found you through Wonderful Wednsday Linkup (which is my first discovery also).
Thanks for the linkup party – Looks like ya’ll have fun over here! Linked up my daughter’s fashion.

I thought your dress was already made this way – how disappointing it was to find that big whole after the fact. But glad you were able to come to a solution to wear it. Zara seems to be a great, popular brand!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Zan, thanks so much for stopping and joining us! We do have lots of fun over here! I look forward to reading your linked post! I was super disappointed when I spotted the giant hole in the dress, but I think I like the dress so much more with the patches anyway. Now it has a unique touch of personality and whimsy in it! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

I honestly though that the blue splotches were part of the original dress pattern at first! What a great way to make an item usable.

  • Michelle

Well done! Before you began describing your repairs to this dress, I thought it was simply made that way. I appreciated the whimsy of it. But I love how you took a very broken dress and gave it renewed life. Also? You now have a dress that is an original. One of a kind! And it’s beautiful!

The type of flaws in the dress are ones I would never think to look for. Very strange!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Michelle! I am just getting prouder and prouder of myself for this dress as I read through the comments! I need to get a sewing machine, I think! But now I need to figure out the best one for my super novice level. I don’t know how I missed the giant hole in the back of the dress though when I bought it. I was thrifting with my sister that day and I think I was just distracted. I don’t thoroughly inspect every thrift store garment I buy, but usually when you try things on, I can spot if there are any flaws. Thankfully, the fitting rooms are opened now so I can better prevent myself from buying destroyed items. Although now that I know I can creatively mend things, I won’t be so deterred by a little damage either and I can save some things from their landfill destinies!

Aw, I love Mom’s pin! What a treasure. You are so clever, Shelbee! I’m impressed with your perseverance in making this dress work. And it truly does! How great is that that your local shop gets these items from Zara. But how dangerous, too, right? Lol! I used to sew all kinds of things but got rid of my sewing machine when my jobs became all-encompassing. You need one, my friend! It would be fun to play around with. Enjoy your new horde and we will enjoy seeing them styled!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thanks so much! Isn’t my mom’s pin so lovely?! It has been a cherished favorite forever. I don’t even remember when she gave it to me or if I just took it after she passed away. I actually wore a very similar style of dress for my wedding as she did. She wore the pin on her jacket and I wore it on my hat. Every now and then I do bring it for a more casual spin! I used to have a small sewing machine but when we moved to NY, I sold it at a yard sale because I just wasn’t using it. But that was back when my kids so young I had no time for anything other than momming! I do need to get a new one. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

    Shelbee,

I’ll be stealing this … “one of kind, damaged and patched, and eclectically beautiful”. You did a marvelous job with this visible and yet invisible mending project. Patched garments are so uniquely fabulous and I like that you added additional ones to make the whole of it intentional. That is a sign of creative genius. And thank you for the mention of and link to my 21 in ’21: Delightful Reads post.

That might be the best compliment ever…when someone else quotes you! I am starting to get all sorts of creative mending ideas now! It was pleasure to give you a mention. • Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom

You are so creative! I love how you thought to touch up the damaged areas with denim. I would never have guessed you did this and I really though this was how it came! I really love the blue and it was what I noticed first on the dress. I have a sewing machine, but I rarely use it and I hate sewing with a passion! Ha!! I think if I had more time, I’d apprecaite it more. THANK YOU so much for featuring me and my tie dye beachy dress! 🙂 You made my night!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Carrie! I am so pleased that you can’t see all the hand sewing errors from afar! I guess I did a better job than I thought because the common response has been the same as yours…that the dress came like this. Yay! I feel like I am really winning now! I have gone through phases in life when I have really enjoyed small sewing projects to hating sewing all together. It requires an attention to detail that I don’t quite possess. But I guess when I am just creating things for myself, it doesn’t much matter. I have no goals of making money from sewing! Hahaha. It was my pleasure to feature you in your beautiful beachy dress! Have a wonderful weekend.

  • Mica

I don’t know if I’m more impressed with yoru creativity or your ability to hand stitch denim – it’s not an easy fabric to work with! 🙂

A few years ago our opshops had the same thing – they had a bunch of zara pieces that were damaged in some way. I got a really cute blazer I still have and love – the only problem with it is that the lining is torn. Which you don’t see because it’s on the back and it’s covered up when you wear it! One of my fave blazers! 🙂 Sadly a lot of the other peices were beyond my mending skills, which are non-existant, haha!

Hope that you are having a nice weekend! It’s a long weekend here 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Mica, thanks so much! I am so inspired by all of the wonderful comments on my novice sewing skills! It is definitely fueling my creativity which is great! I just got a Zara blazer on my last thrifting trip as well. It is black velvet with a satin lapel. That piece had a big sticker on it saying it was perfumed. I guess when they get too much odor on them, they have to damage them out. I turned that thing inside out and tossed it straight into the washing machine on gentle and it came out good as new! I think it has the potential to become a favorite blazer. But it is put away now until fall or winter. I hope you have the most wonderful weekend!

I think you did an amazing job on adding the patches – I really like how the finished garment looks. It’s fun to put that personal spin on a thrifted item.

Thanks so much for the link-up parties, Michelle! Have a fantastic weekend!

  • Grace

Oh my gosh Shelbee, I feel so inspired by this post!!! I never would have guessed that you sewed those patches on yourself had I not read the post; I thought for sure the dress came like that. I think it is so unique and cute! And I find it even more inspiring that you don’t have very advanced sewing skills. I’ve always wanted to get more into upcycling but feel like I’m not good enough at sewing – this post makes me think I can do it, too! And that floral pin from your wedding? Such a beautiful and special piece. Thanks for sharing this post! I have so many ideas for projects this summer now. 🙂

Grace, thanks so much! I am glad that I could inspire you! I really need to start watching some sewing tutorials and maybe get myself a sewing machine! This little project would have been so much quicker if I had a sewing machine. But I do like the therapeutic benefit of hand sewing. I used to hand sew doll clothing years ago for the sole purpose of distracting my mind. Then I would donate the clothing and the dolls where ever I could! I guess if I could manage doll clothing, I should be able to handle minor upcycle and mending projects for myself, right? I can’t wait to see what kind of projects you work on this summer! Have a great weekend, my friend.

  • Laura Bambrick

This dress is super cute! I’m glad you didn’t end up shortening it, I think the silhouette is good the way it is. The patches add a really fun element to it! And I love that jacket, too!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Anne, thank you so much! I was so excited to share my patchy little project with you! I would like to improve my hand stitching skills so that I am not so sloppy. I even had this idea to stitch colorful designs onto the denim patches but then when I saw how sloppy I was hand stitching around the edges of the patches, I decided that it was probably best if I just left them plain. Practice makes perfect though so I think I will continue trying my hand at little projects like these. Actually, I do want to sew some straps onto a very sentimental maxi skirt that I never wear to make a dress. You did that to a skirt and I loved the idea.

How was I so completely unaware of Fashion Revolution Week? I remember the tragic event that started the revolution but I literally have no recollection of this week from past years. I must smoke a lot more weed than I thought! I am on it now though. What an inspiring mission that speaks to my hippie soul.

I hope you are having a fabulous weekend!

      • Anne M Bray

For a non mender, you did great! You can always do more stitching on it, if the muse moves you. Embroidery floss makes it prettier. Here’s a great mending book for you: https://www.amazon.com/Mend-Refashioning-Manifesto-Kate-Sekules/dp/0143135007/ She’s the the mastermind behind #mendMarch. I currently am reading a library copy, it’s great.

The skirt into dress is super easy. First find ribbons that you like. Something sturdy like grosgrain. I’ll take some pix of the inside attachment and email them to you. I have a ton more skirts that need this done. Maybe a step-by-step post will be forthcoming (and a “new” dress in the process!).

        Have a great Sunday! xo

        • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh my goodness, Anne, thank you so much for these fabulous resources! I will not be intimidated by mending any longer! And practice does make perfect, at least that’s what they say, but I kind of prefer imperfect anyway! I just wrote a little rhyme. Haha. I look forward to a step by step post of this sort. Yay!

Thanks so much, Jess! My patience for the sewing process sort of comes and goes in spurts! I love it when I am in the mood for it. Otherwise, I can’t be bothered to even sew on buttons sometimes! My hair is in desperate need of a trim! It has been almost a year since I had it cut and colored professionally. Great job – the denim patches look like a real design feature, and now you have a customized dress that no one else in the world has!

  • Cheryl Shops

That’s such a creative solution to that dress, and it looks so natural, I thought the dress came that way! Mending is totally a worthwhile skill to have, and it only takes a little time to completely repair (or transform) your clothes—that of course doesn’t stop me from procrastinating on it for weeks or months 😉

What a great idea. You have made this dress purely unique to you. It looks beautiful on you. I am definitely going to have a nose around the thrift or “second hand” clothes shops as we call them. I know there’s some little gems waiting for me. Great that you are able to pick up Zara stock with the odd flaw….brilliant!
