I have another amazing thrift shop find to share with you today. I discovered this Chadwick’s corduroy dress buried in the racks at my local Thrifty Shopper. I am currently having a moment with corduroy so that was the first thing that caught my attention. Then the beautiful fall shades in the paisley print were the next things to capture my eye. And when I saw the original tags still attached with a thrift shop price of $7.99, I was completely sold.

I headed to the checkout with fingers crossed that the dress would fit. You still are not permitted to use the fitting rooms in the thrift shops near me so I am always taking chances when I purchase anything these days. I figured since the dress was new with tags, if it didn’t fit I could just resell it on Poshmark. But it does fit, so I will be keeping this fun dress for now.

As for trying on things in thrift shops, I have a specific outfit combination that I always wear to go thrifting. It consists of black leggings and a tank top with an easy to remove top layer (sweater, jacket, etc.) and easy to remove footwear. This way you can try it all on right there in the aisles! I do get some annoyed looks from folks, but I really don’t care. You can’t return items to thrift shops, so I want to make sure the stuff fits.

The reason I didn’t try on this dress in the store was because I took Archie with me on this particular thrifting trip and I didn’t wear my thrifting outfit. Plus, after about 20 minutes in the store, he was getting all whiny that I was taking too long. He had found a few squirt guns to purchase for himself and he was simply ready to go home. So we scurried along as quick as can be. And I received a 50% off coupon from this purchase which I used to buy most of my outfit for this month’s Thrifty Six post.

Let’s get back to the outfit though. Aren’t the colors in this dress just so fabulous for fall? I wore brown tights to keep a monochromatic silhouette that would also let my red and green accessories shine. I feel like the tall red ruffle boots, red beret and earrings, and green motorcycle jacket pulled out all of the beautiful colors in the paisley print.

Speaking of paisley, it is one of my all time favorite prints ever. And it is the theme for the December Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. So if you have some paisley pieces to share, we would love for you to join us!

As much as I love a paisley print, it does seem fairly difficult to find in the world of fashion which is a bit surprising to me. With ancient Persian-Indian origin, paisley prints have been around in textiles for, well, a really long time. Paisley became very popular in the West in the 18th and 19th centuries but yet it seems to have diminished in popularity in more contemporary times.

According to InStyle Magazine, however, paisley is making a big comeback this year. I found this really interesting article as well that traces the origins of paisley prints in the world of fashion, The Paisley Pattern from Its Origins to the Modern Runway.

While this ancient print has come in and out of fashion over the past few centuries, my love for paisley has never waned. I just wish I had more of it in my closet! Now I must go searching through that abyss to find some more paisley print to share for The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. You can be sure that this dress will reappear in that post!

Also, a quick note on thrifted fashions…my sister introduced me to this really fun Facebook group, Thrift Store Fashion. If you are an avid thrifter like myself, I encourage you to check it out! There are so many fun preloved styles shared every day in this group.

This is a very beautiful dress. I don’t have a lot of paisley but it occurs to me that the print almost always is with gorgeous colors. Those boots look stunning under the dress. Have a great weekend!

What a fabulous find! We can’t try on clothes in the majority of stores here either and it has been making it so hard to buy clothes and shoes (we’re currently sending back the second pair of “kitchen/chef” shoes for Alec and crossing our fingers that the third time is the charm!).

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Joanne! I haven’t been shopping in stores much lately, but I know that places like Old Navy and Target allow you to try on now. But the thrift shops have closed off all the fitting rooms and the rest rooms! I hope you get the correct fit for Alec’s shoes this time around as well! How frustrating that can be.

Our stores still do not have dressing rooms open. We can buy them, try them on at home, and then return them to the store (which I think is kind of odd) but they have the dressing rooms barricaded. I’m thinking because we live in a low population area and they just don’t have enough staff to cover that.

        • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I am finding it so funny though how the rules are so different depending which store and which location. I have definitely gotten nasty glares even in the grocery store if I pick something up off the shelf and read the label and then put it back. Like they don’t want you to touch anything, but they damn sure want your money! So I mostly just stay home because I just can’t deal with it all! I suppose if you return something to a store, they maybe quarantine it for 14 days before it goes back to the sales floor. But of course, multiple employees will touch the item first! None if it makes any sense. Thanks for stopping by, Joanne! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

That dress was a great find – how cute! Those red boots were the perfect footwear choice, you have such a great boot collection Shelbee. I remember drooling over the Chadwick’s catalog in the late 80’s and early 90’s – thank God there wasn’t online shopping back then, I’d have gone bankrupt as new college graduate with no self control! I hope you have a wonderful weekend my friend – BTW, last weekend I watched both Maleficent and Maleficent 2 – loved them!!

As a dad to five, I love that the words thrifting and stylish can go hand-in-hand. Now, to figure out how to get all our girls to buy into this.

Great outfit and thank you for hosting another fantastic link-up!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Jed, thanks so much! I started thrifting when I was 14 and I fell in love with the idea that you can find unique quality pieces for a fraction of the prices. Thirty-two years later and I still love it! I worked in a consignment shop a few years ago and we had a lot of teenagers who shopped with us. I think the younger generation now is so on board with thrifting for environmental reasons that it is becoming more and more popular with young people. So I think you will be able to get your girls into thrifting! Just call it a trend and they will at least give it a try, I think!

Loving the look. I so remember going to the thrift store with my two when they were young. We had a deal. If they left me alone over 15 minutes, I would buy them the toy, ball, book or something they wanted there. It always worked.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, Patrick! That is a great bribery technique for shopping with kids! I would much rather just shop alone though. Haha. But who wouldn’t?! Archie kept blurting out really loud that he didn’t like the smell in the thrift store! I had to keep shushing him. Kids!

You know what’s even more annoying than closed dressing rooms?? I noticed our local Target store took most of their mirrors out from the clothing department. Can’t even hold something up to your face to see if the color looks ok. And our goodwill store placed a clothing rack right in front of their only mirror! So annoying!! Then in other parts of the country even dressing rooms are open…

I’m glad this dress fits you. It’s perfect for fall with the long sleeves and the paisley print. What a great find!
    Thanks for hosting the linkup!

Ellie, thanks so much! I have had some wonderful thrift shop luck lately. Someone was just telling me recently that they were scolded by a store employee at Kohl’s for holding something up to her face in front of a mirror. She was told you are not permitted to do that! So many of the rules are contradictory and nonsensical which is why I just stay home most of the time. They know me in the one thrift shop that I frequent the most so I think they are used to my trying things on in the aisles! But they also have their one mirror blocked with stuff. I just go do one of those funny dances in front of it where you try to see your reflection through all the stuff piled in front of the mirror! I am so ridiculous sometimes!

It drives me crazy that we can’t try anything on in stores—it’s basically the point of being able to shop in person! I’ve been doing a lot of window shopping and browsing instead (and of course shopping online). Love your red boots, and that dress looks like a keeper to me!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Cheryl! On a recent trip to Old Navy, I had a conversation with the fitting room attendant as to why so many places have the fitting rooms closed and she explained to me that it’s because Covid germs stick more to the metal fixtures. I didn’t find this an acceptable explanation, however, because most stores have metal fixtures all throughout not just in the fitting rooms. So to me, what I heard was, “We are too lazy to have to actually clean the fitting rooms and the store.” Again, a super odd reason as well because when I worked in retail, we cleaned all the fitting rooms thoroughly at the end of each shift. I would think the process would remain the same but with stronger disinfectants. But what do I know? I can’t make sense of anything in this world lately! So I’ll just stick to sharing the fun outfit inspiration!

Wow, what a find! Paisley corduroy is unusual these days and that pattern and color combo is so rich! Thrifting is really working for you, my friend! Your look is just beautiful with those red boots and hat and moto jacket. Perfection!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thank you so much, my friend! I really am having some great luck in thrift shops recently. I have a few more outfits already photographed featuring thrifted items. I hit the point where I absolutely do not need anything else in my closet, so I am just enjoying the hunt for unique pieces. If it isn’t screaming fun and fabulous to me, I don’t need to add more clutter to the closet!

Such a cute paisley print dress! Lovely find! 🙂 The red accessories are a fun touch with it, and very Christmas-y with the green jacket 🙂

It’s a shame you aren’t able to try things on but good that this fit you! When we went out a few months ago it was strange as some stores let you try things on and others didn’t – of course having no cases here for over 60 days everything is pretty much back to normal and change rooms are open again 🙂

Hope you are having a great weekend 🙂 We went out and did more Christmas shopping yesterday which was fun 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Mica, thanks so much! I was feeling a little festive with the red and green but I like how the colors are too Christmasy. That is so wonderful to hear that you have had zero cases for 60 days! Hopefully, the rest of the world can get to that place soon. We just did a bit of Christmas shopping yesterday as well. It was nice to get out for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your weekend!

    HI Shelbee
I really like this mix of colors here! Red, brown and the fab green moto look great together and really pick up the colors in the dress. You look darling in a beret! That seems to be one hat I can wear and I have a pink one.
What a great thrift find! I have a few paisley dresses I love, and this is pretty. Love the smaller cord fabric.
Is this place close to your house? I have been only taking pic in front of my house, not feeling like goig anywhere.

Thanks so much, Jess! I am loving my berets right now! I don’t venture very far from house for anything including photos these days. This is actually right outside of my therapist’s office which is about a 1/2 mile down the road from my house. Hopefully, you can join us this month for our Paisley theme with the Good Buy/Good-Bye Book! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, my friend!

Cute dress but I think it would be too hot for down here in the south. Actually, I don’t think I’ve worn corduroy since I was a teen and I had corduroy pants. I didn’t live in the south back then 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with me at my party #UnlimitedMonthlyLinkParty 18, open until November 26 at 12:05 am. I invite you to check out all of my themed link parties. Any link you add to my parties can also be added to my Unlimited Monthly for more views and shares!!

What a great find that dress was! I love the red boots and hat too! We must be on the same wavelength because I’ve just bought a brown and orange paisley shirt dress on eBay (I’m waiting for it to arrive). I’m loving cord and velvet at the moment too. Hopefully the dress will fit me and I can join in the Good Buy/Good-Bye theme next month! Thanks for linking up!
