It’s been a hot minute since I have shared an Adventures in Thrifting post, nearly two months actually. Since I seem to be lacking writing inspiration at this very moment, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for simple outfit post featuring these new to me leopard overalls.

A few weeks ago, I was visiting my friend Denise in her consignment shop, Solitary Consignment (the same store where I worked a few years back), when I spotted these adorable overalls hanging on the rack. I jumped on them really quickly only to find that they are a size medium. Y’all, I have not fit in a size medium anything in probably 20 years so I merely sighed and placed them back on the rail.

Then Denise’s sassy sister came into the store and insisted that they would fit me as she shoved me into the fitting room, overalls in hand. Well, I am glad that she was so pushy because they fit just right. I should have learned by now never to rely on the size tag on any article of clothing.

Granted I have lost a bit a weight recently, 25 pounds since January, but I still weigh in at 175 pounds and I am just under 5′ 7″. According to CDC standards, I still fall squarely in the middle of the overweight range and would need to lose at least another 17 pounds to be on the highest end of a normal healthy weight for an adult woman of my height. For some reason, my brain wants to equate normal, healthy weight to size medium. And if I am above that normal healthy weight, then my size should be above a size medium. I know, it’s very twisted logic, but then again, so are the CDC standards with their sweeping generalizations on what is healthy weight.

But let’s get back to the cuteness of these leopard overalls. They are by the brand Blue Buttercup which is a brand that is available through some wholesalers where I previously purchased inventory for my now defunct Shelbee’s Shoppe. So I guess it could be carried just about anywhere from department stores to small boutiques and online shops. The overalls are made from a medium weight jersey material and feel very much like sweatpants. I believe I paid $14.99 for them which is much less than the wholesale price for similar items from this brand.

I find that overalls are never the most flattering style on me, but I still love to wear them because they are fun. And sometimes feeling fun in my clothing is way more important than feeling flattered by my clothing. It is the person underneath the clothes that make the clothes shine anyway. But…you can see in some of the photos that the overalls do create an undesirable effect in the crotch area if I am not careful how I am standing. Nobody really needs or wants that. But, on the other hand, I don’t think anyone really cares either if the crotch of my overalls bunches up sometimes. Do any of you really care?

I did struggle a little bit with styling these overalls. I find that the best options for overalls of any sort tend to be something fitted underneath and something loose and flowing on top. I kept the color palette to black and brown and added a black fitted sleeveless top with a lightweight black kimono to mask some of the lumpy bumps that were bulging at my sides. Hey, maybe if I lose those 17 pounds, I’ll lose those side lumps, too!

Since I wasn’t doing much on the day I wore this outfit, I wore my Target brand footbed sandals. I actually purchased these shoes for Archie at the beginning of summer. He liked them well enough so I tossed the tags and receipt and just as quickly he changed his mind and hated them. They are a men’s size 9 which is just a tad loose on me, but they became my summer throw-on shoes that I leave by the front door. For the $25 price tag, I have already reduced the cost per wear to below $1. But can someone please explain how my 10 year old wears a bigger size shoe than me. I don’t have small feet so what size is this kid going to need when he’s 16?

Major score on these cute overalls and just goes to show that you cannot tell by looking at a tag or a size alone – you would have missed out on something fabulous! The fit is perfect on you and maybe you struggled with styling but I’d never know it! Great job, these are so cute!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Kellyann! I have long ago given up on size tags except for things smaller than size large. Haha. I now have pieces in my wardrobe that range from size medium to 8XL. Yep, you read that right. 8XL! I have a high-low hoodie thing from some overseas retailer that I needed the 8XL and you would never know when I put it on because it fits just slightly oversized. I had no problem wearing that size either, but a size medium had me all intimidated! LOL I hope you have a fabulous weekend, my friend!

Aw, thanks so much, Pamela! I love sharing my thrift shop finds! There are so many hidden treasures in the second hand stores. That is a bummer that you lack browsing opportunities in your area though. It is one of my favorite hobbies. I would be so sad if I didn’t have easy access to thrift stores! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Well…you know I love you but your crotch area is not the first thing I lookat dear….. So I didn’ t notice it. LOL. I think they, whoever they are, think very quickly that women are overweight. And I also think that everyone should have that weight that feels good. I agree with you that it’s the person in the clothes that makes a look shine or not. No matter if it is flattering or not! And I think it suits you very well!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

OMG, Nancy, this is the first comment I am reading this morning (at 5:30 a.m.) and I nearly spit my coffee out laughing! Thank you for starting my day with great big ole healthy belly laugh! And thank you for the lovely compliment as well. I hope you have the best weekend, my friend.

They are probably the coolest overalls I’ve ever seen, Shelbee! What a brilliant find! I love that they’re in sweatpants fabric. I bet they’re super comfy. I know what you mean about them sometimes bunching in the crotch, and that would probably bug me a little bit too, but we shouldn’t worry about that kind of thing. Who’s looking there anyway?! lol
I also love that you’re wearing your son’s shoes—which are pretty fab by the way. A bit like Birkenstocks, right? They’re perfect for wearing around the house at this time of year.
Anyway, speaking of around the house, Friday is house cleaning day BLEURGH!! I’d better get on it!
Huge hugs, and have a wonderful weekend, my friend,
    Suzy xxx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Suzy! You are right, who the heck is staring at my crotch anyway?! And if they are, well then I don’t need to worry about the rest of my outfit, do I? Haha Yes, these sandals are fabulous for around the house. Very much the Birkenstock knock-off! Honestly, I owned a pair of Birkenstocks once (I think I left them behind when I got divorced over 20 years ago!) and these Target ones are equally comfortable as are all of my other fake Birkenstock sandals. Saturday is cleaning day here, but Jeff does most of that, so I am just spending the day getting ahead on blog stuff because I have all sorts of mini trips planned over the next two weeks. I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

They are cute overalls! What a great thrift find, and they are lovely with the black! i wouldn’t worry about lumps and bumps either – i think we can always be so critical of ourselves and find flaws others would never see!

Thank you for the link up!

Hope you are having a good week 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Mica! I agree that we are definitely more critical of ourselves and notice all the teeny tiny flaws that others would never even see. As much as blogging has helped to improve my body confidence, always looking at myself in photos can sometimes be detrimental, too! I hope you have a fabulous weekend ahead, my friend!

Well, I don’t think the CDC can be trusted for any medical advice anymore, so I really wouldn’t listen to them. I think you look great and I can’t believe they are saying your overweight. That’s ridiculous. Anyway, cute overalls! They are so unique! Thanks for the party.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Ha, I agree with you completely, Amy! So here’s another story that made me really mad in the moment but it is laughable now. The last time I went to the doctor in the fall, I was about 15 pounds heavier than I am right now (and I had just lost 10 pounds over the previous month). My physician looked at me with absolute disgust on her face as she informed me that I am severely obese and continued to berate me until I was in tears and walked out. People can be just as cruel as the institutions that direct them, I suppose! Thanks for the wonderful comment! I hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Clothing sizes really are all over the place. I can usually eyeball items pretty well to see if they will fit but I do prefer to try on before purchasing because you never know! My mom always taught me that if something on the rack catches my attention I should take it to the fitting room without question. You can question it once it’s on your body (or if you can’t get it on your body) before deciding if you should buy it. So I always shop with that mentality. There is no harm in trying it all on!

Love to see your fabulous thrift and consignment finds! These leopard overalls are so fun, and look great on you! I like the way you styled them in a creative and unexpected way with the kimono. Size markings are really all over the place from maker to maker-I’m glad you took a chance and tried these cute overalls on. Also, thanks so much for the favorite from last week-I really appreciate it! Enjoy the weekend!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Di! I always find the cutest pieces in second hand shops and I love to share them to encourage other people to shop second hand more frequently. My kimonos are the best outfit savers ever, by the way. Any time I feel I need to hide something, I turn first to my kimono collection and they usually work out perfectly. Best garment ever created! It was my pleasure to feature your post! Have a lovely weekend.

Cute, comfy and reasonably priced is the perfect combination for an outfit, nice find! You look great, and I did not even notice your crotch or the weirdness you were talking about so I wouldn’t worry about it 😄 My 11 year old son also has bigger feet than me!! Thanks for the link up and sharing my daughter’s bag!!

Thanks so much, my friend! The crotch thing is making me laugh! I suppose I could have left that part out since apparently I was the only one who really noticed it. Haha. I love that bag you made with your daughter. I sent it to my friend and she is super excited to make a few with her daughter. If she does, I will definitely get some photos to share with you! Love your logic about weight and size. I would be so happy to fit into a New Zealand size 14 again,,,,,,,, however size 14 is w-a-y bigger now than it was when I actually was a size 14…

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh my goodness, Ratnamurti, sizing is so confusing, isn’t it?! Yeah, a 14 now is much different from a 14 even 20 years ago. Your comment reminded me of that saying that goes something like this…”If only I was as fat as I was the first time I thought I was fat!” For me that would be about 50 pounds less than I am now. And a very unrealistic weight goal for a woman my age. Time to embrace what we’ve got and just take care of it the best we can!

  • Sheila (of Ephemera)

Love this fun look, Shelbee! I adore anything leopard, although this is a little on the casual side for me personally. You know, I would not even have glanced at your crotch until you said something! (lol, and now I’m scrutinizing it!). I think this just goes to show: most people really don’t take in all the details of what we’re wearing at any given moment.

That kid of yours is going to have massive feet! I often check the men’s section in thrift stores for shoes for myself – I’m a size 7 or 8 men’s (9.5-10 women’s).

Your hair looks amazing in this style – I’m loving your white! So classic and elegant!

Have a wonderful weekend, my dear, and thank you so much for the link-party!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Aw, thanks so much, Sheila! As cute as these little jammy overalls are, I definitely could not see you wearing them! You are right, they just are way too casual for your aesthetic. I am laughing so hard about the crotch business, too! I suppose I could have left that part out but it made me chuckle and I do like to talk about the uncomfortable things! Just the word crotch seems to raise an eyebrow or two! Ha. It’s funny because whenever I hear friends talk about how awful they look in a photo, I always remind them that photos freeze you in time and that no one really ever sees us that way in real love because we are all always moving somehow. So while the photo may capture a weird crotch line, it likely would not stay weird for long enough for anyone to notice in real ‘moving’ life! But now my weird crotch thing is memorialized in still photos and talked about extensively! Also, I always check the men’s shoes in the thrift shops, too! That’s where I get most of my cowboy boots! Have a fab weekend, my friend.

  • Angie

Hi, Shelbee – Oh my God! How could you resist picking up those leopard-print overalls?! And the way you styled it, with the unique black first layer and the flowing black kimono, makes them seem more like a jumpsuit. Oh, and my explanation for how your 10-year-old son’s feet are bigger than yours is because the human species is thriving and evolving to grow larger all the time. If you look at the little beds and the little shoes in the history museum from back in the 1800’s, people were much smaller back then than they are now. I always think to myself that they must have looked like munchkins if we could go back in time to visit. Lol! Thanks for sharing your inspiration in this post. You look fantastic! XO – Angie, yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Angie, thanks so much! These overalls feel like I am wearing pajamas, too, so it’s like a double win! I love your explanation of my giant child! Haha. I find human evolution so fascinating. And yes, our species has grown definitively larger over the generations. I read a comparison a long while back that compared the height and weight standards as well as the average height and weight of American soldiers in WWII to American soldiers now and the difference is absolutely incredible. I had been searching for a WWII Eisenhower jacket that were part of the military dress uniform at that time. The largest men’s jacket sizes I could find anywhere were about two sizes too small for me! This triggered me to find the statistics. The average (averaged from 6 million enlisted men) male soldier during WWII stood at 5’8″ and weighed 144 pounds. The average male solider today is 5’10 1/2″ and weighs 180 pounds. That is a huge increase in average size in less than 100 years. Mind blowing! Thanks for mentioning it…I am still so fascinated reading these stats a second time!

I can see why you were drawn to them! I have done that before where I take something out o a package and go , no! and it fits! Anyhow, these are adorable on you! They are, of course because of the leopard and you are wearing them! 🙂 You have a great smile and I am loving your hair. It is much longer than mine now and the touch of grey gives it a fun look! I love thrifting too but do it on line as it is easier for me. Poshmark is my guilty pleasure!

Thanks so much, Jess! I was so happy these cute overalls fit! I think I will have fun styling them in cooler weather, too. My hair is getting so ridiculously long and overdue for a color! I haven’t had my hair cut since last June! I had been dying it myself but it is getting too long for me to manage that at home and I am starting to consider just letting the gray come in now that I have come this far. But I really do need a trim at least, the ends are getting a little yucky. Sitting at the hair stylist is my absolute least favorite self care activity. I find it utterly dreadful and a waste of time when I could be doing other things and so I just keep putting it off. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

You do not need to lose 17 pounds, Shelbee!! Well, that’s my opinion, of course, you can if you really want to! But you are feeling healthy and strong and to me, that’s the measure of being at your perfect weight. The CDC guidelines are ridiculous and don’t take into account all the different body types. They make me so darn mad! Anyway, you look so cute in those leopard overalls. The sheer kimono is brilliant with it! And I must try those Target Birks! (I think you called them Fauxinstocks or something.) Happy Saturday. I’m a day late, once again.

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Darlene! I know that I don’t need to lose 17 more pounds! Haha. I really would like to lose about 10 more but that’s it. Otherwise I have to start replacing my entire wardrobe and I really like my wardrobe! I feel like the height and weight guidelines for healthy adults have not kept up with the changing size in humans as we evolve. There is a difference of 2 1/2 inches and nearly 40 pounds when you compare the average American soldier during WWII to the average American soldier today. Of course, that is just a small segment of the population, but probably one of the healthiest segments of the population so that speaks a lot. Anyway, I am happy with my body where it is, I just wanted to point out the ridiculousness of the standards that are set for us. If I weighed in at the lower end of my healthy weight range, I would look completely emaciated and sickly. I know this because I did weigh that in my 20s and I looked emaciated and sickly!

Speaking of Fauxenstocks (I got that word from Anne Bray, she’s a clever one!), I have at least a dozen different pairs of off brand footbed sandals and I have found them all equally comfortable for a fraction of the Birkenstock price. Not that Birks aren’t fabulous, I just like to have so much variety that I prefer the less expensive options. I do want my husband to get a pair of Birks though. Since he doesn’t switch shoes with every outfit like me!

I hope you are enjoying the weekend, my friend!

Shelbee, I freaking love these leopard-print overalls, and I don’t think they suffer from Bunchy Crotch at all! Also, you look fantastic, but more importantly, as long as you feel good, who cares what the number on the scale (and a very simplistic, outdated model of what is “healthy”) says!
    Cheryl Shops | http://www.cherylshops.net

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Cheryl! I agree that the number on the scale means very little in the measurement of one’s health. I feel better than I ever have in my entire life and no number can change how I feel! But I do like to point out the strange oddities in what is presented to us as healthy standards. These overalls are so crazy comfortable and I could totally see you styling these in the cutest way ever!

Thanks so much, Pam! I am very okay with how I look right! Which is why I had to point out these weird standards and how they definitely should not apply to the entire human population in one giant sweeping blanket application! It is very misleading and it contributes to all sorts of mental health issues for many.

I love those leopard print overalls! Sizing varies so much from brand to brand. I’ve got jackets in every size from XS to L! The problem with Body Mass Index is that it doesn’t take into account body composition – you could be at the heavier end of the healthy range but be quite muscular. I think you just have to listen to your body and take these guidelines with a pinch of salt. You look great!

    Emma xxx
    http://www.style-splash.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Emma! Sizing is all so silly so you really do have to try things on and not rely on the tag. And I am feeling better than I ever have so I am not at all worried about my weight or the CDC guidelines. I just wanted to point how ridiculous these standards can be and people tend to just blindly follow them without accounting for things like body composition. My last doctor verbally berated me for being “severely obese” as she stared me up and down in disgust while she was consulting the BMI chart. Haha. She is no longer my doctor (I made sure of that, the wretched woman should be no one’s doctor). Rant over! Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful week!

OMG! These are adorable, and they look so comfy!

The weight guidelines are such crap. They assume we are all built the same. When I was working at a business college the company that provided our health insurance decided to do a health fair for us. Our physical training teacher came out as overweight. So incredibly silly because this woman was ripped. The gal was all muscle. All of those weight and BMI charts need to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

    Michelle
    https://mybijoulifeonline.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Michelle! Oh I totally agree that the healthy weight guidelines are nonsense and they fail to account for body composition. I have always weighed “more than I look” because my muscle mass is much denser than the average woman. But it is this failure to account for our body differences that contributes to body image issues for so many people. Especially when there are physicians who still adhere strictly to these guidelines. It’s all so crazy to me!

Shelbee, you’ve worked hard to lose this weight, so you should be proud to wear these cute overalls!! You look thinner on camera, too. I see it in your face. 🙂 I hear you… I’m just under 160 lbs again… Covid was great for not eating and losting 12 lbs but it crept back on. Are you just eating really clean now?? I did feature your post at last week’s Share Your Style #314 for you. <3 I've been getting into leopard print lately; it's just a fun print!

    Happy writing and thrifting,
    Barb 🙂

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Barb, for this lovely comment and for last week’s feature. Twelve pounds is a lot of weight to lose due to an illness. Oh my! I always say though that I am one good stomach virus away from goal weight! But actually, now I am really just one weekend of fasting away from goal weight (2.5 pounds to go before I hit my arbitrary goal weight…the weight I was when I met my husband 13 years ago). I was eating a lot cleaner earlier in the year but I have fallen off that pretty badly. I transitioned to an intermittent fasting schedule about a year ago and that has been hugely helpful in maintaining the weight loss. And then my daily yoga helps as well with a bit of vigorous sexercise when I can fit it in! Haha.
