A Good Ole Fashioned Ass-Kicking & Link Up On the Edge #199

This week has really kind of kicked my ass in the grandest fashion. It began with PMS sending an earth shattering surge of hormones through my body which left me feeling tired, irritable, and frustrated. I also tend to feel anger that verges on rage during these hormonal episodes. And that is a very unpleasant feeling for me.

Then Jeff left for a three day trip to West Point (he is home now). About an hour after he left, I heard some awful news about the unexpected death of a friend. All of these things on top of a world that has been breaking my heart daily and I have to say that my ass is sufficiently kicked.

I don’t want or need any sympathy, I just wanted to explain that I have not much else to share today except the sort of outfit that you will find me puttering about my house wearing these days. Usually with a glass of some alcoholic beverage in hand (or more likely a glass pipe packed full of greenery) to momentarily erase my woes.

While my woes are not all that extreme comparatively speaking, they are still my woes and I still feel a deep sadness within me. I will most likely continue trying to artificially erase it all until I am ready to feel it and process it. In due time. As all things must happen.

In the meantime, be kind to one another. Love one another. Support one another. Be a light in someone else’s darkness. And allow others to be that light for you when you need it.

I hope to get lots of rest this weekend and get myself back to “normal” by Monday. What are your weekend plans?

My dear friend Patrick of Adventures in Weseland has taken his blog into much deeper territory with his post, Peaceful People Power. This post gives an important perspective from a very well-educated, loving and caring, African-American man on the current state of affairs in our country on the racial injustice front. He has been a mentor and a friend to me in helping me to process all of this in my very white world. I have so much gratitude for him and his willingness to share and educate. Do go read this post.

I know you are not looking for sympathy but wanted to let you know that I am very sorry for the loss of your friend. And also for Jeff.

  • Joanne

Sorry you had such a tough week! I was so surprised to see that my post was a reader favorite! Hope you have a better weekend. I’m really not sure what I’m doing this weekend.

  • Kellyann Rohr

Well Shelbee, you look pretty darn amazing in this outfit despite how you must feel and to me that means there is hope! Hormones are no joke and completely color how we respond to things and then to lose someone dear to you when your rock has left (thank goodness for only 3 days!) – well that just sucks. Sending you all the love my friend!

I hope things pick up for you Shelbee. Sounds like tough times. I’m up to my eyes in building house stuff this weekend. I currently have a huge fridge freezer sitting in my living room! But, it’s trivial stuff compared to how you’re feeling. Here’s to a better week next week. I love your dress. I’m looking for one just like this. xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Laurie! I am hoping to see a turnaround in my mood this weekend! The PMS just makes everything exponentially worse. But all of my stuff is rather trivial as well in the grand scheme of things. I just needed a moment to vent, I suppose. I hope you enjoy your weekend and can get the fridge out of your living room soon! Haha.

I am sorry to hear what you have been going through 🙁 Such hard times at the minute and then to get news like that. Sending you lots of hugs xx

Sorry you’ve had such an awful week. Next week will be better. I love this outfit. It looks so contemporary and cool. Yet comfortable.

  • Jill

I am so sorry for your loss. I’m glad your husband is back home to be with you. I feel you on the hormones – when they’re out of whack it’s horrible! I hope you can get some rest and relaxation this weekend!

Thanks so much, Nanchi! I just shared this quote with this post on Facebook…”Life is tough, my darling, but so are you.” (Stephanie Bennett Henry). Great minds think alike, don’t they? I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Thanks for the feature. I am only showing what I see in the world.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts to you on the death of your friend.

Looking very relaxed and I hope that you have a good weekend of healing.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Debbie! Well, this was a good day for a puttering around outfit. I have not looked as cute the past two days! Haha. Lots of tears, lots of quiet contemplation, lots of emotional roller coaster riding this past week. But I literally just slept the past 2 days away which I obviously needed. I am feeling much improved already. I hope you are having a great weekend.

Those sandals are adorable. I would not be keeping those just around the house. And I’m so very sorry for the loss of your friend. I am praying for you to get that much needed rest this weekend.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Lauren, thank you so very much. I got lots of sleep the past two days and I am feeling so much better already. I guess sometimes, life needs to throw a whole bunch of bad at us to maybe force us to slow down and rest and reevaluate.

And these sandals were so worth the few dollars I spent on them. They are so comfortable and I wear them all summer long around my house. I also have two other pairs in black and a leopard pair. They are so handy! I hope you are enjoying your weekend, my friend.

I totally relate to your feelings, although mine are primarily evoked from world events. (One of the benefits of being post menopausal – none of the pesky hormone fluctuations.) It has occurred to me that all my reorganization – which can be objectively justified as needed – may be an effort to gain a feeling of control. Ahem.

Michelle, thank you so much. My feelings are all exacerbated by current world events right now as well. Man, that shit weighs heavily on me. I wish I could find a way to release some of that anxiety. But one day at a time and going through all the processes necessary for dealing with all the crap that life throws at us. Maybe I need to do a little organizing as well to feel more in control! I hope you are having a relaxing weekend, my friend.

Ugh, the weight of things happening in our country weighs pretty heavily on all of us, so know you are not alone. At least in that regard. Do rest and relax, my friend, and I am hoping the weekend gives you all the rest and relaxation you need. If not, keep doing it!!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thank you so very much! I have gotten lots of rest the past few days and I am feeling newly revived right now. I just hope it lasts! The weight of the world does weigh heavily on me frequently. I need to learn how to better carry that weight without breaking underneath it. I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend! Hopefully you can take some time for yourself this weekend, and that you’ll be feeling better soon!

Your “at home” outfit looks great. I think a long cardigan would be so practical for me because I am always cold inside in summers when I wear shorts and the family wants the AC running.
I made some sourdough this week and tomorrow is the day I will have to bake the farmers bread. So I’ll be busy in the kitchen. Maybe a little bit of gardening too. The weeds have multiplied since we received so much rain earlier this week!

Ellie, thanks so much for your kind words! I am always so cold, too, so my sweaters stay in constant rotation all year long. I am sure that keeping yourself busy in the kitchen will keep you from catching an air conditioned chill! Some days it is just too hot for cooking and baking, but it is great way to warm up when you need to! We just did some yard work this weekend as well. My husband did the weeding and I mowed the lawn. Fun family time! I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend, my friend.

Thank you so much for the shout-out, Shelbee! It means so much to me.
I’m so sorry for your loss and for your difficult week. I hope this coming week is better and that a lil’ something brings you joy, even if it’s as simple as this cute and cozy outfit (or a glass of alcohol). Thinking of you lots. <3

Grace, thank you so much, my friend! You are so very sweet. I have spent the past few days resting lots, thinking too much, and then resting some more. I am feeling much better already. I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Thinking of you and glad to know Jeff is home to help hold you through this sad time. Hoping the weekend will give you a few moments to catch your breath and relax. We have had a string of deaths, in fact, I just made a jaunt to Walmart to get 2 sympathy cards. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend.

Your pink and blue are so pretty together. Love the comfy looking slides, too. My eyes were drawn to the texture of the peeling paint behind you. Great texture and color and backdrop for this post.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Leslie, thank you so very much. I really appreciate all of the kind words and support. I am so sorry to hear that you also have experienced some loss as well. I hate when that all comes at you in giant waves of bad news. I have spent the past few days resting and contemplating and resting some more and I am feeling much better today. Hoping to kick off the week in a positive and productive way. And that chippy wall is the back of my garage. A thing that I don’t think we have even considered repainting any time soon! So I am glad that chips have some sort of appeal! Haha. I hope you are having a lovely weekend, my friend.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend! Ugh. That’s a lot in a short time. AND I totally get the PMS thing. I swear its worse in my 40s than it was a teen. I seriously just wanted to leave the planet last week.
Hope this week is better and hope you have a restful weekend my friend!! xoxo
    Sherry

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Sherry, thank you so much for your kindness! OMG the PMS thing at this point is seriously like I am trapped in hell in my own body. Oh, the cramps. I thought they were bad as a teenager. That was nothing compared to this! I spent the past two days lying around and doing nothing much other than taking frequent naps. I am feeling much better already. As for feeling like leaving the planet…I can relate to that entirely! I hope you also are feeling better!

What an amazing post from your friend Patrick, a really thoughtful read and I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. You say you don’t want any sympathy for your off-week but I am offering a virtual hug and sympathy anyway – sometimes we have weeks that feel like a badly fitting shoe, just everything and anything and even nothing makes it feel “not quite right” so a big supportive hug and go easy on yourself as we all have them and the best thing we can do is offer yourself some kindness, we can then offer kindness back to others when we see them having those weeks too – which you can’t do on empty batteries. Hoping your weeks get better and on a completely shallow note – you look sublime

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Juliet, thank you so very much for such kind and supportive words. I really appreciate that. I spent the past two days doing a lot of nothing, just puttering around my house, relaxing, and taking lots of naps. I am feeling so much better today after all the rest! You are so right, we must not be too hard on ourselves when life starts battering us a bit. I am starting to feel my batteries slowly recharging and hopefully the next week will be a brighter one! I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

    Hi Shelbee
I am sorry to hear about your friend. I can relate to things being difficult. I am sure you miss hubby.
Lots of stress and anxiety lately- trying to help my mom , trying to be ok as well.
    Im thinking of you too!
I do enjoy an afternoon glass of vino myself. It relaxes me too!

Jess, thanks so much! It is funny because I thought I had processed my grief fairly quickly and then it sent me into this crazy place of self reflection for the past two weeks that has absolutely exhausted me! I think the grief combined with being in my house 24/7 has not allowed me time to escape my own thoughts. But I am getting back to normal slowly. I hope you and your mom are doing better and I am so glad that you have each other to lean on. Stay well, my friend.

      xoxo
