The Holiday Series: What to Wear to a Winter Wedding with Zan.Style

Welcome to the fourth post in The Holiday Series which is a six post multi-blogger collaboration organized by Ada of Elegance and Mommyhood. If you missed the first three, we have already shared our Thanksgiving Day outfits, our Black Friday shopping outfits, and our holiday home tours. And we are at it again with some style inspiration for what to wear to a winter wedding.  There are ten of us sharing our outfit ideas for this post, so be sure to scroll down and check out the amazing styles of the other nine fabulous women!

*This is a sponsored post. I was given this dress in exchange for a blog post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

*Shirt dress: Button Front Knee Length Ruffed Sleeve Dress – Black c/o Zan.Style.

For my winter wedding look, I kept it quite simple by layering two little black dresses. The bottom layer is a ribbed bodycon dress with spaghetti straps, not appropriate at all for a winter wedding! So I layered this gorgeous ruffled bell sleeve shirt dress on top of it. There is a dual purpose in my layering tactic…as is common with many shirt dresses that I find, I could not properly close the buttons over my bust. This is the reality of big boob problems. I ordered an XXXL in the dress which is the largest size available and while it fit perfectly every where else, my boobs just could not be contained. So I resorted to my reliable styling trick of wearing my shirt dress as a jacket instead. The extra layers also provide some added warmth for the cooler weather.

Wanting my magenta shoes to be the highlight of the outfit, I decided to keep my other accessories quite simple with a small black clutch, a dainty gold floral necklace, and a few delicate gold bangles. I added some magenta tassel earrings to pull it all together. And of course, patterned stockings to really draw the eye toward the fabulous shoes.

Back to the dress for a minute…the ruffled bell sleeves are really the highlight of this piece. I love the substantial cotton fabric as well. The garment is really beautifully crafted and I am thinking of wearing it as a jacket paired with denim and some killer heels next time. Or perhaps belting it would work just as well. I think the versatility of a little black shirt dress provides endless possibilities.

If you have an upcoming wedding and wondering what to wear, check out these nine ladies and their winter wedding outfit ideas.

Kellyann: “This time of year I am reaching for something with a little glamour yet comfortable.  This faux wrap dress in black is a classic piece but by adding a fun statement necklace and my short leopard coat I’ve added a little glamour.”
Kristin:  “Would you guess that two of the items in my winter wedding look are secondhand? This black and white printed dress and coat are both thrifted! I’m talking about where I thrift in my post as well as my aversion to tights… I don’t care how cold it is, if I have the choice I’ll take my chances with bare legs!”
Whitney: “I’m not actually attending any weddings this season.  If I were, I probably would have wanted to buy a pretty, new holiday dress.  But instead, this post was a good exercise in wardrobe remixing!”
Chrissy: “When I think “Christmas wedding” I think silvers, blacks, reds etc, but I couldn’t resist going with this deep burgundy, ruffle top and floral skirt. These colors are everywhere right now!”
Ada: “A little black dress in velvet is the perfect dress to wear for a December Wedding since it is the Holiday season. Velvet is the IT Material of the season – so rich, elegant, dressy and beautiful. I love that this dress is in a midi length which makes it Wintery and for a pop of color I chose a coral python clutch, blush velvet pumps with a blush pink lace choker and red lipstick. I’d also wear this elegant floral kimono jacket over the dress to keep myself warm and layers are a must for a Winter Wedding or Holiday Party.”
Monica: “I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season before.  As always, thanks Ada for the fun collab!  Today I’ve decided that for a holiday wedding I want to be comfortable and wear pants.  I paired the pants with a fun pearl top.”
Linda: “Going for a Winter Wedding on New Years Look: Heels to start off for the  more traditional look and of course a great pair of chucks for dancing into the night. I do have a shawl I will wear to cover my shoulders but heck, how fun is this amazing sequin dress from Charlotte Russe paired with J Crew Pumps or black converse.”
Jennie – “A black jumpsuit is an elegant look perfect for weddings, especially in winter when you also want to stay warm. Topping it off with a bit of sparkle makes it perfectly festive for the season!”
Christine: “What I love most about this silver metallic pleated skirt is the fit and how flowy it is. This is such an elegant and chic outfit to wear to a Holiday Winter Wedding. Simply dress it up with a black satin camisole, fishnet tights, classic black pumps and layer your favorite winter coat et voila!”
Shelbee: “For my winter wedding outfit, I went for more of a dressy casual look with layered little black dresses: a button front shirt dress over a body con dress.  I kept my accessories simple with a gold link floral necklace and a black clutch. Then I let my bright pink heeled loafers be the statement.  My feeling is you can never go wrong with a little black dress and some fabulous shoes for just about any occasion!”

A note on the shoes: I ordered these a size up as I often do on Shoe Dazzle. I should not have done that. They fit very true to size and now I have beautiful shoes that are just too big! I literally could not even walk in them. It was actually quite the scene the way I was hobbling around while taking these photos! I even put some inserts in them to help.  It did not help. I may try them next time with some cute socks instead.

  1. OK that outfit is a stunner head to toe – my favorite of them all for this particular collab. I love how you layered two little black dresses. I have layered dresses before too and I will let you on a little secret. About 8 or 9 years ago for a special occasion while in Chicago, I layered two dresses (both black) and paired them with magenta velvet pumps. I wish I had photos to show you. Great minds think alike. Too bad those shoes are too big, what about exchanging them for a smaller size?! They are so stunning!

I am so glad you are a part of this collab and you have been a part of every single one Shelbee and I cannot wait to see the final two outfits you style for The Holiday Series and of course our end-of-the-year linkup!! I will e-mail you soon!

Welcome by and check my post as well! =)

    • Ada, thank you so much! I wish you did have photos of your similar styling of two LBDs and magenta pumps. I would love to see that. I could exchange the shoes except I wore them outside already and it’s all through the mail which is just too much of a hassle for my taste. I am going to try them with them cozy socks and see what happens. I like that trend anyway right now! I will start making my rounds to the other blogs shortly! I can’t wait to see all the fabulous styles in this post. And I also look forward to the next 2 posts and our year end link up collaboration. Have a great day, my friend. And thanks again for organizing this whole wonderful thing!

  7. Wowza! You are brilliant Shelbee! When I saw your picture I was drawn to what I thought was your jacket and then THOSE SHOES! So the jacket is a dress – genius – and it will be fabulous with jeans next time. I’m dying, I want it. THOSE SHOES THOUGH. My color – oh my word, I want hot pink shoes! I don’t think my feet could handle the high heel but they are to die for. You thought of everything my friend, right down to those stockings. This is so flattering on you and perfect for a wedding!
Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

  8. I love the all black, this is stunning for a winter wedding. Definitely can play up the accessories!

  9. Layering 2 black dresses?? Who is being creative now? 😉 Love it! Those shoes are gorgeous Shelbee and of course right on trend. I guess I will need a pair of those, as well as a pair of those detailed pantyhose! Love being apart of this and seeing all the great looks everyone comes up with! Have a fabulous day, beautiful!!

    • Chrissy, thanks so much! I only layered out of necessity! What is that old saying…necessity is the mother of invention? I think the stockings are from Target! They have some cute choices once you start digging around in their hosiery section.

A totally fun collaboration! I look forward to seeing all the Christmas and New Year’s looks. Have a fabulous day, my friend!
