Styling a Kimono Into the Fall & Link Up On the Edge #59

Are any of you as obsessed with kimonos as I am? I seriously have a problem. At last count, there were 30 kimonos in various prints, solids, and lengths hanging in my closet. And I still cannot resist browsing through the kimonos any time I see them in a store. Oh, and when Charlotte Russe has a $15 kimono sale, forget it, I am in trouble! That’s where I scored this pretty floral one. For a mere $15.

*This is not a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fall is upon us and the temperatures are cooling quickly and drastically. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not complaining. I always prefer the cooler weather over the heat and humidity. But I am not ready to pack in my lightweight airy kimonos for heavier knits and sweaters. So I am going to style them for as long as I can…until I start freezing in my flowy chiffon!

But I do love Fall hues, so of course, I am reaching more frequently for kimonos in autumnal tones and prints. Burgundies, blacks, blushes, and creams are on constant rotation right now. I love the print clash of a dark floral with leopard print for a cool weather feel. Add in a base of olive green and my signature knee high gladiator sandals and this kimono is ready to ride right into September with me.

“Look! A cicada shell!”

I am sure I will be layering these sheer garments over long sleeve dresses and long sleeve tees when the temperature drops another 10 or 15 degrees before I decide to pack them away in exchange for my duster cardigans. But until then, this kimono obsession of mine will continue into the Fall. You will probably see a few more on the blog in the next few weeks. I just can’t help myself.

What are your favorite summer wardrobe pieces that you just can’t let go? And how will you carry them into Fall?

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you are all enjoying these final days of summer. This is very much my favorite time of year as the weather cools but not too much. Β And the sun sets a bit earlier but not too early. The mosquitoes start to disappear so I can enjoy my backyard. Β And the kids go back to school! Momma will have some freedom in just a few short (maybe long) days!

Now onto your favorite posts from last week’s link up.

  1. I think there is an entirely perfect reason you are addicted to kimonos!! It’s because they are perfect for any age, and size woman out there!! What’s not to love? The fact is I might need a couple more (yeah right!!)!
    You are so lovely, Shelbee!!

  2. Yikes that’s a lot of kimonos, where do you store them all? I adore this one you’re wearing the colours are so on point for Autumn. The khaki dress is cute too really looking super together. Thanks for the link-up Shelbee. x Jacqui

    • Jacqui, thanks so much! I know, isn’t that ridiculous that I have accumulated so many?! We converted a small bedroom into my closet so I have lots of space to hang all of my stuff! Have a great weekend.

  3. Loving the Kimono trend Shelbee. Perfect transition item for chillier days ahead xx

  4. I love this look on you! I have a few kimonos in my closet, but Summer is my favorite time of year and we wear them into the winter here in SoFla.

    • Neti, thanks so much! I am going to try to style my kimonos over some long sleeved pieces and see how they look! I am just not ready to give them up. They are the perfect topper piece, I’m sure, for winters in Florida. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend.

  5. Understand the obsession (I have one too). Have tried layering under a kimono when the weather turns brisk? I see no reason that they can’t be work into your wintery outfits. And I must tell that these photos are so cute, especially the ones where you sitting/laying on the ground. Keep on mixing it up.

    • Rena, thanks so much for the lovely comment on my photos! My husband is getting really good at this photographer business! The lying down ones were all his idea and I love the way they turned out, too. I think I am definitely going to keep wearing kimonos over long sleeve outfits as the weather gets cooler, but eventually around here, I will have to trade them in for much heavier pieces! Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. That kimono is to die for! I don’t think I’ve seen one that has gorgeous Fall colors in it! Absolutely love it!

    • Thanks so much, Chanda! I love the colors in it, too. I actually didn’t buy it the first time I saw it because I wasn’t thrilled with the draw string waist, but then I went back and I just couldn’t resist the colors! Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous weekend.

  7. Shelbee, I love your Kimonos. I hoping to pick some up once now that we are transitioning into Autumn. You look great in them, and I adore your lace up sandals. So cute!

    • Gigi, thanks so much! You should be able to find some great kimonos on clearance at this point in the season! I may be on the look out for some cute clearance ones myself…because, you know, I need more! Have a great weekend.

  8. Fall is the best weather in the SF Bay Area. Right we are going a heat wave (100 degrees) but the nice weather around here is in September and October.

  11. This kimono is so perfect to move into fall with! Your sandals are perfect with it. Thanks for the link up!

  12. 30 kimonos? I thought I was clothes obsessed! But I don’t blame you. I love kimonos too. They look good over so many different things. It’s no wonder fashionable ladies in the 1920s wore them! I’m glad they’ve made a comeback because now there are tons of cute ones to be had.

This one has great fall colors and I love it with the olive green and the touch of leopard.

    • Theresa, thanks so much! I am glad you share my love of these fabulous pieces. And it is good to know that I am not alone in my clothing obsession! I do tend to take things a little overboard! Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

  13. Love the pattern of this kimono!!

  14. That kimono is a great fall piece! The darker colors make it transition well!

  15. I understand your love of kimonos! I wear mine as often as possible. They can be casual, dressy and everything in between. I love how you styles yours with the dress. That is a new idea for me to try! Thanks for the inspo. And thank you so much for featuring me! You made my day doll!

    • Cheryl, thanks so much for your lovely comment! And it was pleasure to feature you. You inspire me with every post! I look forward to seeing how you style a kimono over a dress! I always like to belt the dress underneath to keep it a little structured. Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous weekend!

  16. I love how the olive dress pairs with the rich tones in the kimono! Olive is such a great neutral! And agree that you really are the go-to kimono expert! Enjoy the long weekend!

  17. Great combo of fall colors! I too love the kimino…looks great over your dress.

  18. This is a very pretty kimono and the colors are perfect for fall! It looks great with your olive dress and gladiator sandals. I am in no hurry to put away my kimonos, either. πŸ™‚

    • Jennie, thank you so very much! And today, I had to put them away because it is just too cold here! I am wearing jeans, long sleeves, and a sweater and I’m still cold. But the kimonos will be back this week as we are expecting temperatures in the low 70’s. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

  19. These colours look well together !
I think kimonos are always on trend, like you I really like them and think I have about 3 of them.

    • Thank you so much, Lorena! Only 3! Hahaha. You need to get at least 5 more! Just kidding. They really are so fabulous though that I can’t resist it when I see a really pretty one. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

  22. The colors of your outfit are perfect for fall. Such a fun look!

  23. Shelbee, I see why you love kimonos! I really love this one on you too as the colors are up my alley and are great transitioning into Fall. Fall is my favorite season too as I love the cooler weather, being outside, the leaves and dressing for Fall. Those glasses are fun and look like you had a nice time outdoors.
    Have a great weekend!
    jess xx

    • Thanks so much, Jess! I do adore Fall and being outside in this weather. However, today, I am downright freezing! It’s the perfect temperature that I love but it came so fast that I am having trouble adjusting! Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous weekend.

  24. What a pretty kimono, I am all about kimonos right now.

  25. So, believe it or not, I haven’t tried kimonos yet. I have a long vest that’s like a sleeveless kimono. Does that count? Yours looks elegant but I feel like if I wore one it would just look like I’m wearing a bathrobe. Anyway, have a wonderful weekend Shelbee!

    • Julia, I actually have a quite few long vests, too, which I love as well. So yeah, I think they count! You do have to be wary of the cut of some kimonos because they can look bathrobish. Maybe a shorter one would work really well for you! Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

  26. 30 is a LARGE amount of kimonos!
Thanks for hosting and for sharing with my party as well!
Have a terrific holiday weekend πŸ™‚

  28. I need to get myself a kimono! They are so pretty and I love the print of this one!
    Jeans and a Teacup

    • Yes, yes, you do, Jessica! They should all be on sale at this time of year, too! So it’s the best time to find some cute ones for cheap. Thanks so much for the lovely comment and have a wonderful weekend.

  29. Perfect for fall! Layering a kimono over a dress!

  30. Omg Shelbee! Loves! The color and patterns of the Kimono and I love the color of your dress, which goes so perfect with it. I need to invest in my a Kimono yes! Thanks for sharing and linking up hon πŸ™‚

    • Thanks so much, Trina! I am glad you like it! Yes, every girl needs a kimono! You should get one now while they are on sale at the end of summer. Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous weekend.

  31. Hello beautiful. Hope all is well with you and yours. We’re just beginning to return to some semblance of normalcy after a long vacation, sending three to university (broke my heart to leave Eve), and then being hit with Hurricane Harvey. I’m looking forward to better days ahead πŸ™‚ starting with visiting some of my fave blogging ladies xoxo

    • Hi gorgeous! It is so good to see you back in action and making your rounds! You and all of Texas have been in my thoughts and I am so glad to hear that you are well. As hard it is was to let Eve go, knowing how beautifully she is going to thrive must bring you some comfort? Plus it gives you more excuses to visit the east coast! Do keep in touch and let me know the next time you are New York-bound!

      Hugs to you, Sheela.

      • It did, it did. As in my heart was bursting with pride even as it mourned. She’s making friends. She seems more confident and poised and happy. Even her step has a pep to it that I hadn’t seen in years. She’s thoroughly enjoying her classes (she’s getting a Masters in Psychology), so yes, I am immensely proud of her, and so very thrilled that she appears to be flourishing.

If it wasn’t for Harvey, I’d have taken you up on your word for next week, my friend. I had every intentions of going for Fashion Week πŸ™‚

        Much love,

        • She is such a shining star, isn’t it? She is going to flourish in the field of Psychology, too, as she already has such a deeper understanding of the workings of the human mind. You should be so very proud!

If there is anything I can do from here in upstate NY to help with this tough time (all the Harvey mess, etc.), please do let me know. Also, if Eve needs anything from my way, I would be happy to help her out! (Although I am still about 5 hours from where she is). But I will do what I can!

          Many hugs,

  32. Lovely pictures Shelbee, love your kimono and sunglasses πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by and sharing at the weekend blog hop.

  33. love the way you styled the kimono shelbee!!!! So perfect for fall!!!

  34. That’s such a pretty kimono! You look fabulous!

Kimonos are so versatile and really a great way to add a third layer. And since it doesn’t get cold until the end of October around here, they are actually perfect for most of the year. I bought my first kimono last year in Germany and was going to add some more to my wardrobe. For some reason, I still haven’t. I think I’ll have to change that! Yours would be perfect!

Thanks for the link up & I hope you are having a great weekend!

    • Thank you, Andrea! They are so versatile and I love the drama created by a long flowing kimono. There are so many beautiful prints out there right now. I hope you find some gorgeous new kimonos to add to your wardrobe before the summer ends!

  35. Beautiful kimono, and a great price too! I love your sunglasses, they compliment the colours in the kimono perfectly.
