Polka Dots, Smoothie Bowls & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #32

What screams middle-aged granola-eating summertime hippie more than a polka dot maxi dress, a straw hat (featured in my post yesterday), rubber slides, and a smoothie bowl?

*This is not a sponsored post.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.  I am just spreading kindness while supporting local small businesses.

I don’t even know if that makes any sense. But as Rena would say…Fine. Whatever. I am wearing a polka dot maxi dress, my same old straw hat that I have worn nearly every day since it arrived, some comfy black slides, and I am talking about the new juice bar in town. Watertown’s newest food establishment, Atman Juice Bar & Cafe, has just opened its doors downtown on the Square and it is a very welcomed site!

Meet Erica, the owner of Atman Juice Bar & Cafe. She is also the owner of Vigilante Yoga which is situated directly next door to the juice bar with a connecting entrance between the two businesses. It is the perfect set up, in my opinion. Yoga followed by a healthy snack. You can’t go wrong if you are looking for a healthy, energizing, and fun activity in the Watertown, New York area.

Erica Turck, Owner of Atman Juice Bar & Cafe and Vigilante Yoga

So let me just tell you where Erica ranks on the scale of Badass Women in Business. (Yes, I just made that up…but I think it should be a thing.) She is at the top of the list! She is already running the yoga studio. Then she launches a brand new business and hosts the grand opening 3 weeks before her baby is due! This woman rocks. On so many levels. And she manages to look just that amazing (see above photo)!

Now here’s where I take you inside the cafe to have a sneak peek at the menu and the
inviting atmosphere. It is very welcoming and bright with soft light flooding in from the windows that look out onto the downtown Square. The decor is minimalist which is perfectly suited for a cafe specializing in healthy food and juices. Fresh fruits fill the wooden bins that line the wall beneath the chalkboard menus.  The brightly colored crops sit patiently awaiting their turn to be made into delicious concoctions of sweet and rich textures that are so alluring to any palette.

Now I want to introduce you to the lovely ladies behind the bar, Lorin and Alisha, who so effortlessly take orders and start whisking all of these amazing ingredients into the blender. Then they present you with the most colorful, healthy, delicious snacks you can imagine! And always with great big beautiful smiles on their faces!

Check out the detailed menu which lists specific ingredients in each of the offerings at Atman Juice Bar & Cafe.

I ordered The Monkey Bowl and let me tell you this…

“it is quite possibly one of the best things I have ever eaten. It’s like dessert for lunch but super healthy. Creamy and rich, it is a culinary work of art. And it is very filling which has pleasantly surprised me.” (Directly quoted from my own review of Atman Juice Bar & Cafe on Facebook.

You can read more reviews from many other very satisfied customers here.

The Monkey Bowl is a combination of bananas, almond milk, peanut butter, and cacao powder. I opted for oats, protein powder, and chia seeds with bananas, granola, and peanut butter drizzle on top.

My new friend, Tricia, (stay tuned for more about her because she will be featured in an upcoming #SpreadTheKindness post), ordered the Lakshmi “Beets” juice which is a combination of red cabbage, beet root, carrot, cucumber, orange, lime, and ginger. Look how beautiful it is…and the taste was remarkably tangy and sweet with the lingering zest of ginger at the end.

My only complaint is that the chia seeds (or perhaps it was the protein powder) gave me a serious case of the farts! As chia seeds and protein powder will often do. On a positive note, they were the kind of farts that felt ever so good when released! Like good, healthy farts. The kind where you feel the bubbles grow, then you get a quick relief as they ease out quietly from behind. Better out than in, as my grandmother always said.  (Just keeping it real, my friends.)

So if you are looking for a healthy, fruity, refeshing, rich, and tasty snack with a possible side of gas, Atman Juice Bar & Cafe is the place to go! And every ounce of deliciousness that passed my lips was worth every unit of wind that passed my derriere!

  1. I absolutely love this maxi dress and hat! This juice bar looks like a wonderful place. Wish it was in my neighborhood! Thanks so much for the link up Shelbee.

  2. Love! Love! your polka dot dress .. the straw hat perfect accessory! wow Erica is a BADASS … very inspiring.

    • Thanks so much, Celia! Isn’t she amazing? When I was 3 weeks before my due date, I already a 2 week old baby! Ha. But the second time around, all I was doing at that point was crying in my water bottle about how uncomfortable I was! Erica rocks!

  3. I WISH I lived nearby, Shelbee! This is EXACTLY my kind of place! As a yoga teacher who is married to a complete health freak (!), this is what we need here in the Algarve lol!! Any chance that lovely lady can open one over here?! 😉
And I’m absolutely in LOVE with your polka dot dress – it’s DIVINE!!
    Suzy Turner
P.S I’m still giggling about the farting!!!!!

    • Suzy, maybe this is your next business venture?! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely compliment! And I am so glad my fart story could elicit a few giggles!

  4. Mmmmm, that sounds and looks delicious! Polka Dots are fantastic!

  5. You can never go wrong with polka dots and I love this dress on you! I have NEVER had a smoothie bowl, can you believe it? I need to find a place that makes them or make one myself sometime.

    • Thank you so much, Carrie! Polka dots are so fun and so easy to style and always happy! So yeah, this little smoothie bowl was so filling that I almost couldn’t finish it! But since it was so delicious, I of course forced myself to finish it!

  6. The monkey bowl looks delicious! I didn’t know chia seeds caused farting…that explains a lot. Then again my husband doesn’t eat them and he’s a champion farter! I’m guessing the red cabbage in the juice blend had a part to play 😉

    Emma xxx

    • Ha! Emma, thanks for stopping by! I only had a sip of the smoothie so it definitely wasn’t that. I do love chia seeds though…they are good for the digestive tract…so it was probably those! And aren’t all husbands champion farters regardless of what they consume?! Too funny!

  7. Shelbee, you look adorable in that outfit. Love polka dots, and the flowy cut of the maxi combined with the hat is so cute and summery. You are so right about Erica, she is truly a badass. I so wish the yoga studio I go to had a place like that next door. And I love the names she’s chosen for her menu. BTW, hope your “eruptions” have subsided 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Theresa! Isn’t the cutest concept to have the juice and smoothie bar attached to the yoga studio? Erica really rocks! And yes, the gas has passed as it usually does! Hahahaha!

  8. What a fun place and I love, love, love that you support the small businesses around you, Shelbee!!
As for middle age—I’ve decided there is nothing wrong with it!!! Better than dead, right??

    • Thanks so much, Jodie! It is such a cute place! I seriously get the best high when I publish a post like this! And midlife totally rocks. I know I am only on the edge of it, but it just keeps getting better!

  9. Yay on the polka dot dress. I can also imagine it layered with a jean jacket for when it get cooler.

  10. This looks like such a fun event to go to! I love your gorgeous maxi dress too! The flowy style looks super comfortable to wear!

  11. Love the dress and the hat is too cute! Isn’t it funny how the healthy stuff can sometimes really bring on the farts? A few weeks back I baked some zucchini wedges…ya, zucchini is not my friend…lol!

  12. Well, that’s a perfect cover up dress to wear if you eat those seeds! Sorry Shelbee, I can’t help laughing! xx

    • Oh my God, these comments, Laurie! I was trying to find an angle to work the dress in with the fart comment, but I couldn’t quite get there. Thank you for doing it for me! See what a little fart talk does…it gets everyone laughing and jumping right on the fart bandwagon! Thanks for stopping by and giving me a good laugh.

  13. Love the polka dots and Watertown looks so cute! Might have to make a road trip one of these days. Thanks to you, I will know all the cool places to check out.

    Elizabeth | NattyGal.com

    • Thanks so much, Elizabeth! And if you make a road trip to this little tiny town, a blogger meet up is definitely in order! There are many bloggers within a few hour drive from here!

  14. I love the dress is so cute and polka dots have been one of my favourite trends so far this season. That maxi dress is just my style. As for the juice bar, it really seems like an awesome place to hangout in. Thanks for sharing!

  15. Some serious goodness on the menu! Looks and sounds delicious. Feeling guilty now about my unhealthy lunch.

    • Don’t feel guilty, Gail, I am having hot dogs and cake for lunch today at a kids’ birthday party! But definitely try a smoothie bowl when you get the chance! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  16. I am SERIOUSLY dying laughing over the chia seeds…and this is why I love you! Haha! That monkey bowl does look pretty amazing though!

    • Laura, you are cracking me up, too, as many of the comments to this post are! Proving my point…Farts. Are. Always. Funny. Delicious food, a great business review, a cute outfit, throw in a side of fart talk and a popular post has been created! Ha. Thanks so much for stopping by and I’m glad I could some laughter your way.

  17. Looks like Watertown has met with Marin County. LOL. Healthy food always brings on gas and sometimes a sulfuric haze behind me.

Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful week.

  18. Another great look and another fun post! Thanks so much for always being a breath of fresh air! Peace!

  19. I keep reading about these smoothie bowls and have yet to try one. I really feel like I’m missing out at this point… I really need to get on that!

    • Nikki, you definitely do need to try one! I am not one who eats super healthy food regularly, preferring junk more often than not, but it was so delicious! Thanks so much for stopping by.

  20. MMM this looks delicious. I love a great tasting smoothie. Love the polka dots on you too, pretty dress.
    Have a great week!
    jess xx

  21. Fine, whatever indeed!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 I too appreciate the relief that can come from active digestion and a good fart. This yoga/cafe joint looks like a gem and I could only wish for an establishment like this near me. BTW, you look great. The dress is fabulous and I adore how you’ve styled it. Thanks for spreading happiness.

    • Ha! Rena, I thought you would appreciate my reference! And I couldn’t use the phrase “Fine. Whatever.” without giving credit…in fact, I can’t say “Fine. Whatever.” without thinking of you! Good farts are too often so under appreciated, in my opinion. And I like that you have the same appreciation as I! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the lovely comment!

  22. Oh looks like so much fun! I love your pretty dress! Fabulous!

  23. I think it’s a set thing that at one point during your posts I am going to laugh. You are so frank about some things that just gives me the chuckles. Love that you have a place like this near you. I have all sorts of dietary restrictions so having a place like that is the best. (I have made my own dishes similar to the monkey bowl, so I can imagine just a fraction of the creamy goodness you experienced.) And I love that dress. You really cannot have too many comfy maxis for summer.

    • Mary, thank you so much! I love that you approach my blog looking for a laugh! Laughter is so healthy and I make it a point to have at least 10 big belly laughs a day…no matter how miserable I may be! And farts are always funny, so if I fart at least once a day, that’s one big laugh checked off my list! Hahahaha. I cannot imagine living with strict dietary restrictions as I like all kinds of foods way too much. It sounds like you have found the dishes that work best for you though. Thank you for always leaving such thoughtful comments.

  24. First, I was laughing with your description of the maxi. Mine is slightly different. Maxis for me are “I was too lazy to shave my legs and could possibly be too lazy to step into panties and pull them up.”
And although I love the idea of a smoothie bowl, you had me laughing so hard over the fart comments that I farted!!! XOXOXOXO

    • OMG, Cathe! I made you laugh until you farted! That is awesome! Now I am cracking up in my coffee. And you are such a riot, too. “Too lazy to step into panties”…this has to be one of the funniest reasons I have heard for wearing a maxi dress! You are hilarious. Thanks so much for stopping by and keeping it real!

  25. Cute dress Shelbee and The Atman juice bar is right of my “granola” alley! As for the farts, I’m going to guess the protein powder. lol. Anyway, You have the neatest restaurants and shops around your town. I love seeing the posts.

    • Chrissy, thanks so much! I had a feeling you were going to like this particular post! My little town is starting to come around with lots of new trendy places opening up. So I am taking part in this “downtown revival” buy spreading the word about all the fabulous places!

  26. I need one of those in my area! We don’t have anywhere that makes yummy smoothie bowls. I like your hippie vibe, I would wear that hat every day too.

    Pumps and Push-Ups

  27. Pretty dress my friend! 🙂

  28. Polka dots are one of my favorite prints! You look so cute in this!
