How to Wear Over the Knee Socks Over 40 and Link Up On the Edge #14

I don’t really think this classifies as a legitimate “how to” post because it is really simple. You pull on some cute over the knee socks with an above the knee skirt or dress (or shorts) no matter what your age and the rock the hell out it!

I am going to totally throw my sister under the bus here (sorry, sis)…back in my mid-thirties, my sister would make fun of me for wearing knee high and over the knee socks. She told me it was ridiculous that a woman of my age would dress that way. At first, I tried to disregard her words. But then after I had children, those words started haunting me. I felt like not only should a woman of my age not dress that way…but, horror of horrors, a mother should not dress this way!

Then this same sister is the one who encouraged me to start this little blog to show off my creative side! Yes, the sister who quashed all of my over-the-knee-sock-dreams lifted me up and put me on my crazy little fashion pedestal. So redemption for us all!

Also, the blogging community and Catherine’s (Not Dressed as Lamb) #iwillwearwhatilike movement made me realize that I need to stay true to my own style. And boy, do I love my socks! I literally have 100’s of pairs! Actually, three giant bins full of socks. Most of them are knee high or over the knee. And I can’t part with any of them because I just love them all so much! (#itsasockproblem) I even have a Pinterest board entitled Sock Problem!

So, I say to hell with what anyone says…I am wearing my over the knee socks! I actually was going to be super nervy and title this post “How to Wear Over the Knee Socks When You Are Over 40 and Over 200 Pounds”! The only reason I didn’t use that title is because this is a link up post as well and it just got to be way too long! But in the interest of showing you all that I have no shame of my body, I just put my weight right out there! Well, maybe I have a little shame. Like the normal amount. But I certainly have no shame in my weight. Whatever. I weigh over 200 pounds and I can keep up with my kids (as well as any 40+ mom of young boys). I can fit into clothes that flatter me. And my husband thinks I’m sexy. Enough said.

So, please ladies, wear whatever the hell you want! If you wear it with a smile and some confidence, you will wear it well! By the way, this was probably the most fun I had shooting photos to date! One of the reasons I shared a tremendous amount of photos in this post (#sorrynotsorry). But I compromised with fewer words this time. A big thank you to my confidante, my friend, my photographer, and one of my biggest supporters, Amy! I couldn’t do this without you! Thank you so much! I love you right through that camera lens!

  1. I think your over the knee socks look good Shelbee. When you wear something you really like the confidence shines through right?

  2. This could be such a philosophical subject Shelbee! Because us bloggers realize that we can wear what we love—they are only clothes, and it can be a creative process! And I’m totally on board with it.
But it’s funny how other women cut each other down about their clothing & style! Even my mom feels like the neighbors will think she’s being to uppity if she dresses too nice!!
We have to get this message to all the woman out there!!
BTW…I just ordered my second pair of OTK boots–kinda the same thing!!!

    • Perfectly stated, Jodie! I used to feel like I was being judged for dressing too nice for the situation. But then I figured I personally would rather be overdressed than under-dressed for any occasion. And if I feel good about the way I am dressed, then who cares what other people think! And yay to OTK boots! I have a few pairs myself and I love them! Rock on, my friend. And your mom, too, because she is all kinds of fabulous!

  3. Andrea Nine

So sweet of you precious lady to showcase my boho look! Talk about a cute look, I am loving these colors for fall And what fun pictures! You look spectacular!! Have a splendid weekend!

  4. I agree – we should wear what we want! Fashion rules are silly, it’s only clothes after all!

Really like that dress and scarf together too.

Thank you for the link up!

    • So silly, Mica! Where do these rules even come from? They are completely arbitrary and make no sense whatsoever! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the lovely comment. Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. I so agree that we all have to stay true to what we love to wear and what feels like us! The photos show how happy and confident you feel (and look!) in the outfit! I’ve always wanted to get some over the knee socks… ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the link up & have a wonderful weekend!

  7. I love over the knee socks!!!! This look is so cute!

  8. Love these fun photos and your go for it attitude when it comes to style choices! I am now thinking how can I incorporate over the knee socks into my style. ๐Ÿ™‚ You are certainly rocking this swing dress and boots look!

  9. Enough said!

  10. Very cute outfit and you look like you are having a blast ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t have any over the knee socks, but I do have some burgundy leg warmers that I love to wear and can’t wait to get out again!

    • Ooh, Carrie, I can’t wait to see how you style your leg warmers! I have a few pairs myself but I’m not really sure what to do with them…I guess the same as OTK socks? Thanks so much for the lovely comment and I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

  11. Great read, amazing outfits, I love them

  12. I can’t agree more – wear what you want and what you feel great in! You are rocking this look! Your photos are so fun and you look fabulous!

    JillDoused In Pink

    • Jill, thanks so much! Until the weather requires full leg coverage (tights), I will be wearing my knee high and thigh high socks for sure! Have a wonderful weekend.

  13. I’ve never understood this ‘you shouldn’t wear X because…’ anyway. I mean, we see women of all shapes and sizes wearing all sorts of things, some of them look good and some of them don’t (and it has nothing to do with age/shape/size/etc but how the personality matches the outfit). So, if socks are yout thing, then you rock them!

    • So true, Tiina! Thanks so much for this comment. And sometimes I put on a trendy outfit and look in the mirror and it looks horrible because it is just “not me”. So I agree, if it’s your thing, wear it, rock it, love it! Have a fabulous weekend!

  14. You are rocking those knee socks and that dress!

By the way, I don’t know if it’s my delirious mom eyes but I had a hard tome finding your comment section. It blended too much with your tags.

    • Thanks so much, Katrina! And thank you for letting me know about my comment section, too. I don’t know if I change that though without adding an entirely new format template…anyone else reading, do you have any ideas on this? I will look into it!

      Have a wonderful weekend.

  15. Love the prints, fabric and textures in this outfit. Shelbee you look like you were having a blast in this photoshoot!! xx-S

  16. Dear Shelbee, you look amazing in this outfit.
    I don’t wear knee socks.
I wish you a great weekend

  17. Hey there Shelbee! First off, I LOVE your OTK socks – paired perfectly with your entire go girl! And what fun photos by the way! Second, you are soon sweet to feature me in your link up – a big thank you! Yesterday was my 49th Birthday, what a fun surprise!
    Thank you for hosting!

    • Thank you so very much, Suzanne, for this lovely comment! And a very happy birthday to you, my friend! I hope you have an amazing weekend of celebrations planned.

  18. What a fantastic story you told today Shelbee! I am sure you inspire a lot of women with this post. I love your convidance! I saw a pair of over the knees socks at a site and in my twenties, early thirties, I loved to wear them! And now I thought, no I can t wear that anymore! But you changed my mind immediatly. I think it looks stunning on you. Good job!

  19. Love this fall look! I adore this color on you and I want to get my boots out now! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks so much for the link up!

    • Kathrine, thank you very much. We are still wavering between sandal and boot weather! But I guess it will be soon enough, we will all be freezing! Have a fantastic weekend!

  21. You are too cute! Happy Friday!

  22. You are rocking those socks! Love this outfit!

  23. You are rockin’ those socks and I think it looks really cute! My wardrobe needs a major overhaul which I’m feeling a bit excited about for the first time in years.

Thanks for linking with my No Rules Weekend Blog Party…you were the first!!

    • Thanks so much, Paula! I hope you show us some of your new wardrobe pieces as you acquire them! I always love adding fabulous new pieces to my closet! Have a fabulous weekend.

  24. Well said Shelbee!! Rock what makes you feel good with a smile and you will look like a million bucks!
I have been there were I feel as if being a mother changes my whole perspective on fashion, but it totally shouldn’t.
Over the knee socks with boots are always stylish ๐Ÿ™‚
    Thank you for hosting,

    • Thank you so much, Melissa! It is so crazy what motherhood does to us especially about our perceptions of our bodies and our styles. In my first years of motherhood, if I saw a mom wearing heels, I would think she was ridiculous. Then it turned to envy. Then I tried it and now I am that mom who sometimes wears heeled shoes just doing my daily mom stuff! Such a great comment! Have a fabulous weekend.

  25. You rock those socks Shelbee!

Iโ€™m officially back to the blog world after a 3-week hiatus via the 3rd installment of my collaboration with Los Angeles brand TOBI โ€“ come on over at the blog & lemme know what you think! #ShopTobi

    Happy Friday!

  26. You look great! As soon as it stops being 90deg around here, I could copy this!
Thank you for hosing us each week – it’s always so fun!
    XXOO, Mimi

    • I look forward to seeing your interpretation of this look, for sure, Mimi! It will probably be a few weeks before I can wear something like this again. We had that one cool day and now it’s back in the upper 70’s for at least the next 10 days! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the kind compliment! Have a lovely weekend.

  27. I love this dress on you, and the over the knee socks add such a fun touch! So perfect for the fall!

  28. Such a fabulous look! I’m loving boot socks and tassel necklaces right now!

  29. I started fashion blogging three years ago because I was so sick and tired of seeing ageism in fashion. The term ‘Age Appropriate’ such infuriates me, I get so upset every time I see it. But no matter how often women speak out against it, I just keep seeing it. Yes, wear what you like! Love your dress!

    • Amy, I totally agree with you! If I look in the mirror and like what I am wearing and feel confident in it, then I am going to wear it. There are certainly times when I put on an outfit and think, “Oh, this doesn’t look appropriate” and it may be that I feel too old to wear it or maybe it’s just not my style, but the reason to not wear it is my own reason. It is my choice and it’s about my comfort level…not some arbitrary rule set by the fashion police! So my “rule” is wear what makes you feel great, what makes you comfortable, what stays true to your own style. And always be willing to try new things! Thanks so much for stopping by and for such a wonderful comment!

  30. great words here on being confident! I love this outfit for fall! ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. What a fun post! I always see these cute over-the-knee socks and think “I’m too old for those”. You inspire me to go for it!

  32. I laughed out loud Shelbee!!! LOVE it – you look GREAT!!!!

  33. I love how you wore this trend and make them work for your age!

    Tamara –

  34. You rock OTK socks with knee-high boots my friend. Love how you styled this little slip pink of a dress.

Have a great weekend! Ada. =)

  35. Hi Shelbee
Well, I am a fan of OTK boots, so it goes without saying I love OTK socks! I have a few pairs from Target, but need to get a few more. I need to find pairs that stay up! Love the peachy pink top and scarf you are wearing, pairs perfectly with your boots!
    Have a great weekend
    jess xx

    • Thanks so much, Jess! I have the same problem with OTK socks staying up. Some stay better than others, but even the good ones require readjusting throughout the day as I am moving around. I have 2 pairs of OTK boots and I like them okay, but I definitely prefer OTK socks, too!

  36. The socks and boots go great together! Thanks for the link-up <3

  37. I always wanted to try over the knee socks but I never had the courage to try! You have gave me the push I need to step out of my comfort zone.

  38. You rock, I love you to pieces, and I so wish we could be buds in real life. That’s all I have to say. ๐Ÿ™‚

  39. Sorry, I am so late. The weekend got away from me. You look wonderful. Keep wearing the style you do.

    Thanks for hosting.

  40. I have to agree with you, I think anyone should wear the things they love and make them feel confident, even if it isn’t the most conventional of styles. Thanks for sharing at the Grace + Lace Linkup!

  41. Totally agree! I wear what I like because some of the trends right now I think are silly! I already wore chokers once in my life and it just feels funny and that it’s not me. I love fashion because each person likes something different and it can give great inspiration to someone else!

    • Very brilliantly said, Ruth! And I totally agree that some trends are silly or are just not for me! I love that fashion today is so versatile and that it is pretty much a generation of anything goes. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!

  42. I totally agree that you should wear whatever you want and have fun doing it! I don’t know if I would try OTK socks but I never say never about anything! One of my former colleagues (who’s over 50) used to wear some really quirky outfits, including knee high socks over patterned tights. It sounds weird but she always looked amazing. I love to see people wearing unusual outfits ๐Ÿ™‚

    Emma xxx

    • I think you would look adorable in OTK socks, Emma! But I get it if you are not comfortable in something, then it is probably not good for you! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the lovely comment!

  43. Oh you cheeky girl, sock it to ’em. love the attitude and the photos. And of course, you look super cute. thanks for sharing your style and post with my Fine-Whatever link up.

  44. If your husband think that it is sexy, that nothing more to say. It’s approved. I love this pink top. Thank you to share this post with My Red Carpet.

    Anna xoxo

  45. What a lovely positive post! And I have never met a person with a “sock problem” before and I think you look great so don’t stop wearing those knee-high socks, they are so much cuter than boring old black tights which we will all shortly be wearing.

    • Aw. Thank you so much, Robyn. That is such a wonderful comment! I have a scarf problem, too! I don’t know if they have support groups for that or not. Ha! Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous day.

  46. Thanks for linking up to the Top of the World Style party.
