Celebrating International Women’s Day with a Link Up

Happy International Women’s Day! Today, I am joining Miri of Currently Wearing and Sherry of The Life of the Party to celebrate and honor women around the world. Miri reached out to me a while back asking if I would join her today for this very special and important post and I was more than happy to accept her invitation. Be sure to stop by and visit both Miri and Sherry today and read how they are celebrating International Women’s Day and what it means to them. For me, I am celebrating by wearing purple, the official color worn to celebrate and honor women worldwide. And it is the perfect occasion to show of my new purple plaid dress from Rosegal.

“Internationally, purple is a color for symbolizing women. Historically, the combination of purple, green and white to symbolize women’s equality originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union in the U.K. in 1908. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity, but is no longer used due to ‘purity’ being a controversial concept. The introduction of the color yellow representing a ‘new dawn’ is commonly used to signify a second wave of feminism. Thus purple with green represents traditional feminism, purple with yellow represents progressive contemporary feminism.”

“Here’s to strong women: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” -Unknown

“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” -Judy Garland

“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.” -Rebecca West, British author and feminist

“I raise up my voice – not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard. We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” -Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist and youngest Nobel Prize laureate

“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”                  -Madeleine Albright, first woman to be US Secretary of State

“Whether women are better than men I cannot say-but I can say they are certainly no worse.” -Golda Meir

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” -Nora Ephron, American writer and filmmaker

“I am a Woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal Woman,
that’s me.”
-Maya Angelou, American poet and civil rights activist
