I think I have been existing in a vortex of pot smoke and boredom for so many weeks now that I feel like the outside world maybe isn’t reality. With the weather finally beginning to resemble spring, the kids have been spending hours outside which leaves me to my own whims. But my whims are few and far between because there is still no where to go and not much to do.

So I cuddle up in my cozy sweaters and scarves because I am still freezing even in the middle of May and then I escape into the television. It makes me feel like there is something more than what lies within the confines of my house. Television and movies remind me of a time when things were normal. Our version of normal. The normal that we all know and love. The normal that sometimes made us sad and frustrated and angry, but also made us happy and grateful and motivated. I wonder if we will ever get back to that same normal.

So in the meantime, I immerse myself in the fantasies of other people’s minds. The creative geniuses who have manufactured storylines that we can relate to, that we can laugh at, that bring us joy and give life to our fondest memories. Escapism at its very best. So here are some of the things I have watched over the past few weeks…in no particular order other than the order that I have scribbled them in my notebook.

Movies

Logan (2017) starring Hugh Jackman. I have only watched a few X-Men movies but every one that I have watched I really enjoyed. Logan takes place in the future when Wolverine is getting old and weary but he needs to leave his quiet existence in order to help a mutant child who is being pursued by scientists.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) starring Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. This live action adaptation of The Jungle Book was really pretty cool. It had Ralphie and me on the edge of our seats. However, Archie wasn’t all that interested in it.

Trolls World Tour (2020) starring Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. We rented this a few weeks ago when it was first released. We paid $19.99 for a 48 hour rental and I think we watched it about 8 times over two days. Both of my kids love the Trolls movies, but Ralphie is the one who had this on repeat for 48 hours. I enjoyed the movie as well although I think I like the first Trolls (2016) movie better.

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Justin Long, and an all-star cast. This classic dating film weaves together multiple story lines that make fun of how ridiculous we are when we try to interpret and analyze the behaviors of others…primarily in the realm of relationships and dating. I have watched this movie countless times but it is always fun to revisit.

Aladdin (2019) starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud. My sister recommended this movie after I told her how much we enjoyed Mowgli. We began watching it as a family and Archie and Ralphie lost interest within about 30 minutes, but Jeff and I remained glued to the screen until the end. It is a really cool live action version of this Disney classic.

The Matrix (1999) starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. I had never watched this movie before but so many people in my life have referenced it on too many occasions that I was starting to feel like I really missed out on something grand. It turns out I did not miss out on much of anything. I really did not enjoy this movie. I didn’t hate it, but it just didn’t do much for me. Maybe I got lost in all the weird futuristic technology stuff.

Let the Sunshine In (2017) starring Juliette Binoche. This French film is about a midlife woman and her dating misadventures. The previews looked funny, but the film itself was actually kind of sad and depressing. I enjoyed watching it in French though as the subtitles forced me to pay closer attention. It was slow paced but intriguing.

Valentine’s Day (2010) starring Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, and an all-star cast. I am certain I have watched this movie before but some movies just appeal to that inner romantic and must be watched when the female hormones go raging. Some of my favorite romantic comedies are this style with an all-star cast and interweaving stories.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. This movie is a typical romantic comedy where the guy reunites with the girl who calls him out on his crap. They fight like crazy only to end up madly in love by the end. As much as I like the cast of this movie, it was actually a little too cheesy even for me.

Back to the Future (1985) starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. I have been wanting to watch this movie with my kids for such a long time and finally they were interested. Archie really was intrigued by the whole time travel stuff. It was cool hearing his thoughts on how it should work!

Scoob! (2020) starring Will Forte, Mark Wahlberg, and Jason Isaacs. The new Scooby Doo movie was just released on Friday and Ralphie was super excited to watch it, so we rented it for $19.99 for 48 hours and I don’t think any of us watched it yet. Hopefully, I will get to watch it before the rental time runs out.

Mini Series

Little Fires Everywhere (2020) starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. This 8 part miniseries based on the novel of the same name was really intriguing especially as a mother. The story parallels the struggles of four moms from completely different socio-economic backgrounds, each with their own personal demons that seem to drive their decisions. On the one hand, I find all four of them to have acted in reprehensible ways. But on the other hand, I can understand why they did so. It definitely makes you think!

Tiger King (2020) starring all these crazy big cat people. So much hype, so much hype. I finally caved. And damn, that was fascinating to watch. Human beings are way more intriguing than the big cats, that’s for sure. Mind blown.

Television Series

Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003) starring James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson. Joshua Jackson plays the role of Bill Richardson, husband of Elena Richardson (played by Reese Witherspoon) in Little Fires Everywhere. After watching that series, I decided I wanted to revisit a bit of Dawson’s Creek. I don’t recall if I watched this entire series when it originally aired, but watching it now is kind of shocking me with regard to the topics they addressed in this teen drama over 20 years ago. From a teacher sleeping with a 15 year old student to drunk teenagers having sex to infidelity which leads to discussions about open marriage. I think this show was ahead of its time. As for the main teenage characters, I literally dislike every one of them, but yet I can’t stop watching!

You’re the Worst (2014-2019) starring Chris Geere and Aya Cash. This Hulu original series has me and Jeff laughing our asses off. But it is not for the children to even be in the room during this “for mature audiences only” series. It is vulgar, crass, crude, rude, very sexual and quite vile. And if that is your type of sense of humor, than I highly recommend this show. We just started Season 2 and are very entertained.

Brockmire (2017-present) starring Hank Azaria and Amanda Peet. Another Hulu original series that is most definitely for mature audiences. It is based on a character created by Hank Azaria himself and it is absolutely hilarious in its shock value. If you are not sensitive to vulgarities and want a good laugh, then this show is for you. We are half way through the first season and crack up at every single episode. The acting throughout is on point as well. Tyrel Jackson Williams who plays the supporting role of Charles is a seriously fantastic young actor. His delivery ranks up there with the most seasoned actors in my opinion.

I’m reading a lot, that helps me to escape. Isn’t it horrible that it’s still that cold over there? Aren’t you ready for a bit of summer?

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Nancy! I have been reading a lot as well, but it is a much slower process so I haven’t yet a list of things that I have read. It is finally warming up this week! I will be complaining that I am too hot by the end of the month. Haha. You just can’t keep me happy!

Thanks for stopping by, Jill! I think you will really enjoy Little Fires! It is such a powerful message about the differences in how we make our choices as mothers. Even my husband really enjoyed it. So much, in fact, that he is now listening to the book!

Isn’t it strange to watch tv and movies now? Every scene I always think to myself “they are standing too close together!”, “look at how crowded this scene is!”, or “couldn’t have that on-screen kiss now…”. It’s SO weird. I wonder if it will always be that way…sigh. On a brighter note, I love your cute beanie! 🙂

Thanks so much, Shauna! It is so strange that our brains have been trained that quickly to notice the lack of social distancing practices in movies and television shows. It is also very disturbing. I am sure there will be an abundance of film and television set during these times as soon as the film industry can return to normal. It will definitely be interesting to see how this all unfolds. In the meantime, stay well! And positive.

I wish we had Hulu, I want to see Little Fires Everywhere! I rarely watch a movie twice but some bring back such happy memories for me. I wonder too if we’ll ever get back to our old normal. I think if that when I’m watching a show and there are groups of people out and about sans face masks!
    xo,

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks for stopping by, Kellyann! We have been paying for Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime for years for the streaming services, but we never used them much until this lockdown. Now I am so glad that we have them! I think Hulu is only like $7.99 a month so totally worth it because they really have a lot of great stuff there. I am the same way as you when I watch movies and tv shows, it seems weird that social distancing and face masks are not a thing in them! But I bet they will be soon. And that is rather disturbing. Stay well, my friend!

You look so cozy and comfy in this outfit! It would be perfect for a day like today…I caved in and turned the heat back on this morning but luckily it’s supposed to warm up a bit as this rainy day goes on.
My son and I watched the 3 Back to the Future movies last week, and I’m so glad he enjoyed them all as it’s not easy to get him to sit through a movie unless it’s at the theater (he definitely has that from me as my hubby can sit there for days and watch LOL)
We really enjoyed Aladdin when it played at the theater, may need to plan a movie night and rewatch.
    Thanks for hosting the linkup!

Thanks so much, Ellie! I think our weather has finally settled into some spring time vibes! But I may have another cold weather outfit or two to share still. I haven’t had the opportunity to take outfit photos with the kids home and my husband still going to work every day. So I have been limited to weekends for photoshoots and the weather hasn’t been all that cooperative lately. I may need to watch the rest of the Back to the Future movies with the kids now! My husband never sits still to watch much of anything. I am the one who is perfectly comfortable living a sedentary lifestyle with my butt parked on the couch in front of the television!

    Hi my friend!
I know how you feel. Some days feel like Groundhog Day! ( how about that movie?) I do watch tv and wrote about the English Mysteries I enjoy. I also love True Crime, but enjoy some brain numbing shows sometime to escape.
Love those cute sneakers and you can pull off that cute panda hat! I know what you mean as most things are not open here, so it is walking and hiking, etc..
    take care!

Jess, thanks so much for stopping by. It really does feel like Groundhog’s Day! I can’t even keep the days straight anymore. And every day seems to drag on so slowly now that it is light out from 5:00 am until 9:00 pm. But the extended daylight does give me more time to enjoy the outdoors when I actually make my way outside! I enjoy some True Crime every now and then as well and English Mysteries sounds rather fascinating, too. Hang in there, my friend! Stay safe and healthy.

Thanks so much, Eva! I live in Northern NY where we get snow in June sometimes! It is finally warming up with temperatures in the 70’s all week. But it snowed last weekend and I am always cold, so I don’t start wearing spring clothing until June. I think I have one or two more cold weather outfits that I might share before I get into warmer weather clothing. It has rained a ton here as well which inhibits my photoshoots!

Aladdin was good, wasn’t it? Will Smith has the most gorgeous smile.

Dan’s daughter hooked us up to Hulu through her account this week. We’ve been watching The Great (as in Catherine). It’s…., dark and funny. And thoroughly entertaining. Also watching Fargo, and loving it.

I just started watching Mrs. America as well and it is really good. I have only watched one episode, but I think you might enjoy that one as well. That is on Hulu I think. • Chrissy Rowden

Ahhh, I can’t believe how cold it still is for you out there! Yikes. Warm weather is coming though right? And I can relate to the aimless, listless feeling that can takeover during a lockdown – the first of its kind in history. Humans aren’t made to be caged like those tigers, shoot some say those tigers aren’t meant to be caged. lol I didn’t watch the tiger king but I absolutely heard about it. I’ve watched a few movies, the documentary with Bethany Hamilton on Netflix. Have you watched it yet? It’s inspiring to see what she did after her original movie. I also watched the latest Jumanji and gut laughed. I wish they would add the unnecessary kid words (it’s a family movie!) but I can’t lie. I laughed out loud more than once at the movie. And that sure felt good. Anyway, for the month of April I read through Psalms and Proverbs, knowing that I was going to share something from it each day on Instagram. That was hard some days but so good for my soul. Alright this is getting far too lengthy for a comment. Sending hugs my dear…keep creating – you’re so good at it!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Chrissy, thanks so much, my friend! This all does sort of feel like we are being caged and so many humans are getting understandably restless and frustrated with it all. It may turn us into feral cats soon! I have not heard of this Bethany Hamilton documentary but I will certainly check it out. I love new recommendations on these things because it helps narrow my choices a bit. There are so many things available to watch on so many different streaming services that it can get overwhelming trying to decide. I have heard great things about the new Jumanji movie as well and I think your recommendation sealed it for me…that may be a good movie for this weekend. My kids are no strangers to bad language. I am their mother after all and I am that mom that drops curse words frequently! I absolutely loved your IG goal of sharing scripture every day for a month. I applaud you for sticking to it even though it may have been challenging some days. I think doing anything consistently for 30 consecutive days, especially things that are creative in nature, can be very difficult to stick to. But you made the commitment and stuck to it so that is absolutely something to be proud of. And now my response has grown quite lengthy as well so I will sign off by sending you virtual hugs right back!

Oh I forgot to respond to the weather part! It is finally nice out. We have a stretch of the next 10 days at least where it will be in the 70’s, which is perfect for me! But I think I have one or two more colder weather outfits to share! Haha.

Hi, Shelbee – It’s amazing how much the television and online streaming has benefitted from the pandemic! I’m very happy to collect movie recommendations because even though our son is an actor in L.A. (presently inactive, of course) we never know what to watch…unless we ask him. Lol! I enjoyed this post. Thanks, Angie – http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Angie, thanks so much! So many people in the entertainment business have been heavily impacted by this lockdown. I hope your son is doing okay. It is incredible how much streaming services have benefitted, isn’t it? There are so many things available to watch that it can be overwhelming to narrow things down to our personal interests. I love getting recommendations from other people because it helps narrow my focus to something more manageable. I hope you are doing well!

Thanks, Darlene! Hugh Jackman is so great, isn’t he?! And I love flashing back to some good old school 80’s movies! I hope things look a lot different with regards to lots of things by this time next year. I hope you are having a great week!

We have started to watch Tiger King and it’s interesting! Ha! I love your panda hat and cozy layered look with the pop of purple. Our state has started to open up and it is so refreshing, however… it is funny how they told us last week NO pools would open all summer and then today they’re planning to reopen them by Memorial Day. It is giving me whiplash. 😉

Carrie, thanks so much! You have to be sure to finish the whole Tiger King series because it seriously just keeps getting more and more twisted the further into it you get! And I hear you on the whiplash. That is how I have felt for the past two months. I don’t know what or who to believe anymore, so I have just shut down all news and other media sources and plan to just sit in my house until things are normal again and my freedoms have been restored! So many shows too little time! I don’t watch a lot of TV these days but I remember Dawson’s Creek. I loved that show! I have also heard of Tiger King. I am glad to hear it’s worth watching. I love your beanie! Too cute and your purple sweater is a nice pop of color. I hope you are staying safe and healthy. Happy Tuesday!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Maureen! I was super hesitant about Tiger King and then my husband watched the first episode and he was sold. So we went for it and we couldn’t stop watching! Even Archie was kind of into it although I don’t recommend it for children because it gets a little over the top. But from the animal rights perspective and the ongoing battle between these big cat people, it was interesting to hear a 9 year old’s perspective. Archie’s thoughts on it were surprisingly mature and fascinating to hear! I hope you all are well, my friend.

I love it, Cheryl! I honestly hated the very end conclusion to the Little Fires series. But over all, I really got sucked into the melodrama! As much as I love Reese Witherspoon, I absolutely despised her character so much that it was effecting my opinion on the actress! I know that is silly because that effect obviously is proof of Ms. Witherspoon’s incredible acting capabilities. Maybe I need to read the book as well.

Love that panda hat. That is so very cool. And looking great.

Thanks for sharing what you have been watching. A very nice list. I haven’t been watching much, strange isn’t. I am hating things right now because everything I do during this time is canceled. It really sucks. I might head down to the Garden of Eden and get an edible or two as it is getting harder and harder.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks, Patrick! I was trying to read more during my down time, but there are so many distractions in my house that I find zoning out on the television screen is much easier! But I wish I were reading more. This lockdown is getting much harder now that the weather is nicer. I am so bummed that all of my favorite summer activities have been canceled as well. You should go treat yourself to an edible! It definitely will help pass all the down time. And make sure you email me if you do!

Tiger King was so fascinating! And it makes me think twice about going to a private zoo ever again. I need to check out some of these movies again. The Back to the Future Trilogy is always a good one!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Oh my gosh, Laura, Tiger King totally made me question all zoos! Although, something about zoos has always been a bit unsettling to me. But on the other hand, the animals are already in captivity and they can’t send them back, so I kind of feel like we need to support their care taking or something. This series definitely stirred up a lot of thinking! And those people are really over the top in that series. Back to the Future is so great! I hadn’t watched it in years. It is fun to flashback to those 80’s movies.

You look adorable in this panda hat, the whole outfit is very cute. A scroll through your list has revealed that I hardly watched or seen anything on it, lol. I am more into period English epics but not definitely nothing about Meghan and Harry. My true salvation is Seinfeld and Sex and the City.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Anna! Period English epics are great to watch as well! And Sex and the City is the perfect show for binge watching. I used to like Seinfeld but over the years, it started to annoy me! I just started watching Mrs. America on Hulu as well and it is quite fascinating. It tells the story of all the women who led the Women’s Liberation movement in America.

Allie, thanks so much! I was just out of college when Dawson’s Creek aired and I remember watching it but probably not super loyal about it. I love the term hate-watch!
