What to Wear (and Cook) for a College Football Saturday Celebration

Labor Day weekend marked the kick off of College Football Season. In my house, we don’t watch very much professional football (unless that is the only football on television), but we do get a tiny bit excited about college football. For my husband, he was raised on college football and has been a Penn State fan for as long as he can remember. For me, I appreciate college athletics much more than I do professional sports. Perhaps because I spent most of my college career as a student-athlete, I understand the sacrifices and crazy time management skills required to be a successful student-athlete. So I appreciate the world of college athletics much more than I do that of the paid professionals.

To get to my point, my husband gets very excited at the start of college football season. And his enthusiasm is contagious and spreads like wildfire all through our house. It is expected that every one wear a Penn State shirt of some kind on Saturdays (except our roommate, of course, who is a Maryland fan) and football is on the television. All. Day. Long.

I have to confess right here…after all the years of having football on in my house (my father always had NFL games going)…to this very day, at the age of 42, I do not understand the game at all. And that is not for lacking of trying. Or for lack of countless people trying to explain it to me. I just don’t get it. But I do love the atmosphere created when Fall arrives and football season sets in. It makes me nostalgic and happy and well, hungry. So I do what I do best…I put on a cute outfit and I get in the kitchen and prepare the best game day food that I can!

So to kick off college football season, we invited a few close friends over for food, fun, and football. (In my husband’s case, that should be phrased football, food, and fun! Because it is always about the football.) We ate until our bellies were full, our kids were tired, and the games were coming to an end. And enjoyed our company until the wee hours of the night (which, by the way, I am way too old for that kind of socializing, but exceptions must be made on game day!)

Now I am going blast you with some delicious food pictures. So make sure you are not already hungry before scrolling any further! (Also, I never ended up using my cute football trays…oh, well, I will save them for the next party.)

How do you like my digger table cloth? Not really on theme, but it is what I had and this party was a bit impromptu. So I work with what I have! And as I always say, “If you leave my house hungry, it’s your own fault!”

And by the end of the night, we were full and tired!
