The perfect life. We want it all.

What does that mean anyway? Can we have it all? Is the perfect life attainable? In my opinion, I think those terms, have it all and perfect life, are all relative. How does that old Proverb go…it is better to want what you have than to have what you want? Be content with your life and with yourself in the here and now, then you have everything.  As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” And it is this journey that can be perfect even in all of its imperfections…if you choose to see it that way.

And that is exactly the way I choose to see it. My journey, with all of its missteps and mistakes, with all of the wrong turns and bad decisions, with all of the things I could have done differently, has brought me to my perfect life. Are there things I am wanting? Sure. I am human. And a greedy one at that. We all want more…more money, more time, more peace, more calm, more energy, more sleep, more shoes. We live in a world of more, more, more.

But isn’t what we have enough? I think it is and that is what makes me wake up every morning…happy. Truly and undeniably happy. But the wanting is important, too. The wanting is what is drives us forward. If we really wanted nothing, what would inspire us to keep going? Our wants can be material. But we also want things that are emotional, spiritual, and altruistic, don’t we? And when we say we want it all…doesn’t it just mean we want all the things that are important to each of us individually?  Wanting is not a bad thing.  Wanting does not equal unhappiness.

I guess the perfect life lies not in having it all, but in wanting it all. Motivation, drive, desire, love, need, passion, devotion, duty, obligation, responsibility, faith, and hope. These are the things we already have…and these are all the things we really need to get the things we really want. The perfect life is a choice. It is a perspective. It is a decision that you make. Commit to the belief and move forward on your journey in a place of joy and contentment.  That is the perfect life.

“Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty.” -Socrates

“There is no end of craving. Hence contentment alone is the best way to happiness. Therefore, acquire contentment.” -Swami Sivananda

“Everyone chases after happiness, not noticing that happiness is right at their heels.”

-Bertolt Brecht

“It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.” -Dale Carnegie

“Many people lose the small joys in the hope for the big happiness.” -Pearl S. Buck

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” -Oprah Winfrey

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.” -Lao Tzu

“I am content; that is a blessing greater than riches; and he to whom that is given need ask no more.” -Henry Fielding

And two of my favorite quotes today:

“For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain.” -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And…

“At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.” — Jean Houston

Are you living your perfect life filled with infinite possibilities, contentment, passion, and happiness?  I hope so.
