The Key To Great Style is Keeping It Simple

For many people, fashion and style can seem a lot closer to alchemy than to anything else. As though you need some kind of ancient knowledge to begin to properly understand how it all works. Well, that’s just silly and the truth is that fashion is much simpler and easier to understand than a lot of people might think. In fact, great style can be brought down to one basic idea: keep it simple. Many might assume that to be fashionable you must dedicate all of your time to fashion, but the reality is that you can easily create a unique sense of style without that much effort at all. Keeping this in mind, here are a few tips to help simplify your wardrobe and amplify your style.

Staple Items

One of the cardinal rules for creating your own personal sense of style is less is more. Having a wardrobe that is packed with different items of clothing can be overwhelming and will often result in your wearing the same few items on repeat and ignoring just about everything else. Sometimes, it is better to do a major closet purge while holding on to your staple pieces that always work for you and look great every time you wear them.  When deciding which outfits to keep, make sure that the pieces are diverse and versatile.  If a wardrobe staple can provide a daytime look, a evening look, a work outfit, a casual outfit, and other ensembles that are suitable for any other occasion then that piece is a definite keeper. For some ideas on diverse and versatile wardrobe staples, check out these dresses. They all present a unique quality that is different and can create a specific and fabulous look standing alone.  They can also be paired with other completer pieces such as a sweater or blazer to create an entirely different look. Ensuring that each article of clothing in your closet has a specific purpose makes it more likely that you will get your money’s worth in price per wear.

Complementary Colors

Combining colors is one of those concepts that can often confuse people.  If you do not have a specific eye for color, then you may quickly become unsure of which colors complement each other and which colors clash. The best way to decide on complementary colors is just to do a little research. Brush up on some color theory. Or check out fashion blogs, magazines, and runway shows to get some ideas about the color combinations that are frequently used by stylists, designers, and fashionistas. If a color combination appeals to your eye, then it is most likely one that will work brilliantly for your own personal style.

Mix and Match

If you really want to get the most out of a simple wardrobe, you need to make sure that you are choosing items that can be mixed and matched with each other. If you can create different outfit combinations with the same few pieces, then you will never run out of things to wear.  You will also avoid wearing the same exact outfit over and over in a repetitive cycle. The ability to mix and match your wardrobe items also gives you the chance to be more creative and expressive in your fashion choices.

These ideas might seem like incredibly small and simple concepts, but the reality of style is that it really is often the simplest changes that can make the biggest impact. Rather than trying to focus on chasing fashion trends and altering your entire look, sometimes the best thing is to just make a few subtle adjustments.

I hope these tips helped you to find new ways to add some interest to your wardrobe.  If you have any other tips that have worked for you, I would love for you to share them in the comments!

You are so right! I totally agree with you on these great tips and there really nothing better than to keep things simplified. In doing so, I don’t ever feel like I always have to change out my wardrobe. I have items that has lasted for years and can honestly and proudly say I am still using to this day. I hope you are having a great day so far! So happy we are two days away from the weekend! LOL

Thanks so much, Maureen! I am glad you found these tips worthwhile! I am definitely not a minimalist when it comes to my clothes and shoes. I do have so much stuff that I forget what’s in there but it’s always fun to rediscover it later. It’s like having a brand new piece all over again. But for those who do not have the space or the desire to hoard clothing the way I do, these tips are quite helpful, in my opinion!

Thanks so much, Brooke! I tend to overbuy simply because I have a shopping problem and I want all the pretty things hanging in my closet! But I figure I have the space so why not use it! Ha. But a few good staples are always necessary no matter how much you have. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!
