Herringbone and Plaid
I have had this old herringbone swing jacket in my closet for at least a decade and it always makes its rounds into my outfits. It is the perfect weight for temperatures in the 40-60’s and it is classic enough to have decades of staying power to mix with newer trends every year. So you all know by now that plaid blanket scarves are a super hot trend this year. I recently picked up this one from Target to add to my growing collection. As I have been accumulating blanket scarves, I found myself steering away from the traditional tartan plaids, but then I realized that I really wanted one!…

Candy in my Scarf and Crazy Pants
Readers with children, have you ever heard things come out of your own mouth that you never imagined you would say? Things like, “Please stop licking the bottom of your shoe!” or “No, you may not play in the toilet.” If you have small children or did at one time, you are all too familiar with the very strange happenings that frequently occur! I recently experienced another one of these moments when I got dressed in my crazy pants and decided a heavy scarf was the only cold weather accessory I needed. I am an avid scarf collector and this giant blue knit scarf is one of my absolute favorites.…

Socks, Sandals, and Boho Stripes
I have been wanting to try the socks and sandals trend, but I was a bit nervous about whether I could pull it off. So I kept it simple for a cool Fall day with dark earthy tones. I actually planned this outfit from the feet up! I started with my super long, thick, warm, and cozy burgundy socks paired with my very comfortable footbed sandals in deep brown. Keeping with the autumnal hues, I went with darker wash jeans. I have seen this trend of socks and footbed sandals with skinny jeans, but I just wasn’t feeling skinny jeans this day. I tried it with boyfriend jeans, but it…

Floral Bomber to Brighten a Dreary Day
I saw this black floral bomber jacket on the clearance rack at the Fort Drum Exchange (PX) months ago. (For those unfamiliar with the Exchange, it is sort of like a department store located on military bases. They also have online shopping. You do need to have military identification in order to shop there. And it is tax free. Everything is tax free. They carry a lot of high name brands as well as more budget friendly brands, and the prices are a bit cheaper than regular retail. And when they have clearance, they really have clearance! I have seen Michael Kors sweaters on clearance for less than $20. I…

What’s Black and White and Red All Over?
Ha! How ridiculous were these riddles from the 1970s and 1980s? The jokes were totally innocent and fabulously silly. What’s black and white and red all over? Do you remember that riddle? There were two different answers that my challenged memory recalls. 1. The intellectual answer which plays on the homophonic words “red” and “read”: A newspaper! But now newspapers are obscure so this joke is probably meaningless to the younger generation! 2. The gross-factor answer: A skunk in a blender! Bah! Because these are the macabre things we thought were funny three decades ago! I know there were many other variations of this riddle, so my curiosity was piqued…

Animal Print, Red Shoes, and Pearls
My last post was inspired by a playdate at my friend’s house…so I figured that was a good transition to the outfit I wore for the playdate. For playdates, obviously I like to keep comfortable and casual, but I still need to feel good about myself as well. So I went with my Old Navy button fly boyfriend jeans paired with this really cute animal print knit top that I scored from the clearance rack at Kohl’s for $3! THREE DOLLARS! As my sister would say, “That’s almost free!” And, come on, who doesn’t like “almost free”? Especially for an adorable and comfortable top! The weather is definitely getting cooler,…

Too Hot for Clothes: Countdown to Fall (Part 2 of Some…)
(Continued from Too Hot for Clothes! (Part 1 of some…)) Outfit #2: Stressed in Stripes Well, actually, I’m usually stressed in just about anything I am wearing these days. And I like the alliteration. And I like that stressed rhymes with dressed. And this is a fashion blog. So there you have it. Stressed in stripes. In reality, stripes are another new obsession of mine, especially Breton stripes. I have collected quite a few striped shirts and pants, but most of them are heavier and I need the weather to cool down before I can start showing them off. Speaking of weather, today was a teaser of sorts. It was…

Deployment Blues
Today marks 100 days of deployment! I think it also marks a turning point in our moods because yesterday during Friday Night Skype Time, emotions were running high for all of us. It was the first Skype date that ended in tears all around. The kids were crying that they miss Daddy so much and they want him “to come home forever.” This, of course, led to both my husband and I tearing up. We have all been doing really well with this separation, better than I expected, in fact. Last night truly was the first time that the real Deployment Blues set in… Appropriately, I donned a mostly blue…

Meet the Teacher
I went to meet my older son’s pre-K teacher yesterday and I wanted to be “mom casual.” I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I didn’t feel comfortable wearing jeans or shorts, so I opted for tan ankle length pixie pants. I wasn’t sure that a tank top displaying my tattoos was completely appropriate, but it was muggy and hot out and I would rather show my true colors than my sweat! So after playing with layers of lightweight cardigans and chambray shirts, I chose this indigo tank with white stripes and layered a thin scarf around my neck for some extra detail on an otherwise boring outfit. I…

Church and Church Appropriate Attire
First, let me start by telling you that I am not a strict church-goer. In fact, after college where I completed a Minor in Religious Studies and analyzed the world’s major religious belief systems in an intensely academic way, I was completely turned off to all religion for a very long time. However, this past winter while my husband was away on a painfully extended training trip which lasted from the first week of January until the last week of February, I decided it was a good time to see what church could offer me at this point in my life. I was alone with my two young sons braving…
