The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback #6: Surviving the Kinnick Graveyard of Ranked Teams
#10 Penn State Nittany Lions 17 – #17 Iowa Hawkeyes 12 Kinnick Stadium. A stripe out. The infamous pink locker room. Primetime on a Saturday night. This creates an atmosphere that inspires fear in ranked teams that visit Iowa. In 2008, I watched as #3 Penn State’s national title hopes were lost on a last second field goal to a 5-4 Hawkeye team. In 2010, #5 Michigan State came to Kinnick and walked out being beaten 37-6. The 2011 season saw #13 Michigan defeated by an unranked Hawkeye team. In 2016, an unranked Iowa team defeated #2 Michigan on a last second field goal, a win that would help set up Penn…

The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback #5: Where Did All the Offense Go?
#12 Penn State Nittany Lions 35 – Purdue Boilermakers 7 Seriously, where did all the offense go? That was the question of the second half at Beaver Stadium for the Nittany Lions yesterday. Scoring on their first four drives and sprinting out to a 28-0 lead with ten minutes to go in the first half, the Lions and their powerful offense were held in check by a Boilermaker defense in the second half before scoring again with six minutes to go in the game. Sean Clifford’s second interception of the year was really the turning point for the offensive shutdown. It seems that this play was enough to give Purdue…

The Sunday Afternoon Quarterback #3: An Ugly Win is Still a Win
#13 Penn State Nittany Lions 17 – Pittsburgh Panthers 10 One hundred and twenty-six years of rivalry ended on a rainy day in Beaver Stadium with Penn State clawing, biting, and scratching their way to a 17-10 victory over their bitter in-state rival Pittsburgh. This was the 100th meeting between the two teams and on a lightning delayed rainy day in State College, Penn State will hold the series lead 53-43-4 for the foreseeable future. There are currently no scheduled games between these two teams after the current four game series wrapped up on Saturday. Penn State would go 3-1 against Pitt during the four game series winning the last three. Pitt’s only victory…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #17: Citrus Bowl Loss Sours McSorley’s Final Game
Welcome to the seventeenth episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback, with a recap of last week’s Citrus Bowl where our beloved Penn State faced off against Kentucky. Citrus Bowl Loss Sours McSorley’s Final Game #14 Kentucky Wildcats 27 – #12 Penn State Nittany Lions 24 The final game of Trace McSorley’s career was supposed to end with another 10 win season, the chance to break 10,000 career passing yards and give Penn State its third consecutive 10 win season…a feat that hasn’t happened since the 1980-82 seasons and never since the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten Conference. Unfortunately,…

Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback with a recap of yesterday’s Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl where Army faced off against Houston. Record Setting Day for Army Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl #22 Army Black Knights 70 – Houston Cougars 14 In a game that Army was supposed to be the underdog, they were anything but during this record setting day at the Armed Forces Bowl. Coming into the game at 10-2, Army was looking for its first ever 11 win season since the Service Academy started playing football in 1890. The senior class for…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #15: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Welcome to the fifteenth episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback with a recap of yesterday’s games. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year The greatest time of year is upon us. No, I do not mean Christmas. I’m talking about college football bowl season! Although if you really think about it, it is like having a three week Christmas celebration, 40 games in 23 days with the National Championship to close it out. It really is the most wonderful time of the year! Autonation Cure Bowl Tulane Green Wave 41 – Louisiana-Lafayette Rajun Cajuns 24 This game featured…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #14: America’s Game
Welcome to the fourteenth episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback. America’s Game #22 Army Black Knights 17 – Navy Midshipmen 10 Playing for the 119th time since 1890, Army versus Navy has become an iconic symbol of college football. The game in which players will not be heading to the NFL draft to play on Sundays but instead will be donning uniforms to serve their country 365 days a year. The game in which the rivalry, the pure love of the game, and of course, cross service bragging rights are what really matter. The atmosphere at an Army/Navy game…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #13: Championship Weekend Recap
Welcome to the thirteenth episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback. Championship Weekend Recap and Selection Sunday With my Nittany Lions sitting out this Championship Weekend, I’ve decided this edition of the Sunday Morning Quarterback will cover all of the games played yesterday. Today at noon also marks Selection Sunday for the final season rankings and bowl game selections. As much as I’d love to see Penn State head to a New Years Six game, I’m thinking the Citrus Bowl (a.k.a the best of the rest) will be our most likely destination. MAC Championship Game Northern Illinois 30 – Buffalo…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #12: Chaos Reigns During Rivalry Week
#12 Penn State Nittany Lions 38 – Maryland Terrapins 3 Welcome to the twelfth episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! I finally invested in some new fan gear with this cute Penn State fleece that I found in my local Target in Northern New York, which is a really weird place to find Penn State fan gear. But I sure am happy to have it. It is super comfortable and very warm for this snow covered place. Turning it over now to my husband, the Sunday Morning Quarterback. Rivalry week is the final week of the reguar season of college football. This week traditionally pits long time rivals against each…

Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback #11: The Offense Sells the Tickets, but the Defense Wins the Games
#14 Penn State Nittany Lions 20 – Rutgers Scarlet Knights 7 Welcome to the eleventh episode of Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback! Yesterday was the first Saturday this season that I had the opportunity to just lounge around and watch the game with my husband. And I enjoyed every moment of the “doing nothing.” Turning it over now to my husband, Shelbee’s Sunday Morning Quarterback. The Offense Sells the Tickets, but the Defense Wins the Games With the end of college football season not far away and Penn State currently sitting just outside the rankings of a New Year’s Six bowl game, a showcase performance was needed against lowly Rutgers, along…
