My Favorite Time of Year: Back to School with Zaful

I have always loved the beginning of the school year. For as long as I can remember, the whole process of getting ready for the new year to start was just so exciting to me. Shopping for a new wardrobe and school supplies was my favorite part of the summer! Clearly, I have always loved clothes, but I also have forever had a fascination with pens, paper, notebooks, and other similar items. But I also looked forward to the beginning of every new school year with the expectation that a new year meant a new beginning. A chance to try things a little differently than the year before. An opportunity to reinvent myself.

Now, in my 40’s with two young school-aged children, I look forward to the new school year for entirely different reasons. After 11 very long weeks of full-time momming, my patience has been pushed beyond its limits and my sanity is hanging on by a thread. I miss the solitude and the freedom that I had enjoyed for a few hours every Monday through Friday. Those hours when I only have myself to worry about. I can get work done uninterrupted. I can go have a leisurely lunch with friends. I can eat candy whenever I want without having to hide in the bathroom! Oh, yes, those are the days a stay-at-home mom relishes! School days!

While I still do enjoy the preparation for the beginning of the new school year, the shopping for new clothing and supplies, it definitely hurts the wallet a bit more than when I was just spending my own parents’ money. School supplies are expensive! And these required school supply lists just seem to get longer every year. Plus I am that mom who buys extra supplies for the classroom knowing full well that there are some students who will not bring in the required items. Not wanting the teacher to have to provide these items out of pocket, I generally deliver lots of extras to the classroom.

I am fortunate that I have two boys who do not express much interest in clothing. They will wear what I buy. But the shoes! They are both obsessed with shoes!  I suppose they get this passion from me.  Especially my four year old…since he was about 18 months old, this child has always loved new shoes! I can’t really blame them, shoes are my weakness, too. So the new shoes have already been purchased for the upcoming school year. And now it’s time to get a few new pieces of clothing for these kids.

To wrap up this post, I want to send a big heartfelt thank you to all the teachers and educators out there! You are appreciated and I am so grateful for what you do. Being able to send my children to school with confidence that they will be learning in a safe and nurturing environment is of the utmost importance. And I hope that all of your students are better behaved at school than mine are at home! Have a wonderful year!

Waiting for my freedom on the edge,

Shelbee
