I Made It Even Better and On the Edge of the Week Link Up #7

A few weeks ago, I was completely inspired by a post by Rachel of Garay Treasures when she published her Re-Purposed Old Jewelry Leaf Necklace Tutorial. While Rachel was re-furbishing a very old necklace, it struck me that I had a very new necklace that needed some help!

In fact, it was my favorite long silver double tassel necklace that I had picked up last year from Cato Fashions. And when I say it was my favorite, I mean I wore it at least 3 times a week. And when all other necklaces failed to add fabulous to an outfit, I reached for this one.

However, being a stay at home mom of 2 young boys and doing all of the things that we stay at home moms do all day, every day…this necklace fell victim to the lifestyle and eventually met its demise. It would get caught on everything and the tassels would pull off. And when I say everything, I mean it has caught and broken on grocery carts, trash cans, arms of chairs, arms of children, keys, purse clasps, railings, car seats, clothing, door handles, sink faucets…I could on. But every time a tassel would come loose (and it was usually only one tassel at a time), I would always find the tassel. There was even a time when I don’t recall catching it on anything and just noticed that a tassel was missing. I thought that was the end, but by some miracle I found the tassel on the floor of my car. I was elated. Until…finally…that dreadful day when a lost tassel was never recovered.

I was very sad indeed…because it looked kind of silly with only one tassel. And did I mention that this was my very favorite necklace ever? Then I saw Rachel’s post. And I became determined to find replacement tassels to fix my necklace. However, woe is me, after much searching I could not find tassels that met my expectations. But I was not to be defeated in this endeavor. I would fix this necklace and I would restore it to favorite status and I would wear it again!

You may now be wondering who rescued me from my failing travail. Why, it was Walmart! I was grocery shopping there and decided to check out their jewelry crafting section. I was defeated, to say the least, and had very low expectations that I would find the tassels of my dreams. And these expectations were met in grandiose fashion as I could find no tassels whatsoever. But…wait for it…I did find these Mother’s key pendants and I fell immediately in love with the concept! I have two children and there were two tassels on my necklace. (I am unable to find a direct link online to these pendants, but they were around $3 or $4 each.) So for less than $10, I was able to fix my favorite necklace and make it even better! Because now it is a fabulous necklace (just the right length and super versatile) with a very special meaning to me!

I did not take any photos of the actual process of replacing the pendants because it was simply detaching the last remaining tassel and reattaching the keys using needle nosed pliers and extra jewelry rings.

Here is what the tassels looked like (well, the only remaining tassel)…

And you can see how I have worn it before here, here, and here.

And here is my new, better than before, favorite key necklace!
