How To Wear White When You Have Dirty Little Boy Children

Originally, I was going to title this post How To Wear White After Labor Day, but then I thought, “Eh. Everyone is posting that topic in September.” And then I realized that the passing of Labor Day never prevented me from wearing white anyway.  What caused my hesitation about white outfits was my dirty little boy children with their filthy little paws, their tendency to spill, and their all around grimy boyness. Therefore, due to my personal experiences, this is a much more appropriate way to approach the topic of a white outfit.

For years, I wouldn’t wear white pants. Or a white skirt. Or a white dress. Or even a white top. It seemed as if the white attracted the spills. I could wear pink or blue or red or green…even in lighter shades…and they never attracted the kid accidents in the same way that white would. It took me forever to figure out this phenomenon. What was it about white that inevitably caused something to be dumped, wiped, or shellacked all over my clothing?

Then one day it occurred to me. It wasn’t necessarily the white clothes that caused this strange phenomenon to occur. It was my very own approach to wearing white clothing. It was planted somewhere deep within my subconscious mind that white will get dirty. I was trained to believe that once you have children you should never be so bold as to wear white. So if I did don white apparel, I wore it with a shaking fear that it would be soiled within minutes. And this fear, this over-cautiousness became almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Moms who wear white get filthy. But this does not have to be the case.

So I started to wear white more confidently and with a more relaxed attitude. If it got dirty, as all clothes will, I have a washing machine. And dirt washes out. Even out of white clothing. The more I relaxed while wearing white, the less grimy little mishaps that occurred. But just in case, I do layer a nice long something or other in a dark color right on top of my all white outfit!

So take my advice, mommas out there, go forth and wear your white outfits. Relax, have confidence in your laundry detergent, and watch for gum on the playground benches!

How do you conquer the all-white-outfit-dirt-and-spill-attracting phenomenon?
