How To Style a Kimono for Winter (Part 1) & Link Up On the Edge #78

“Colorful garments – ball gowns, kimonos, evening pajamas – made from yards upon yards of iridescent silk or velvet. I own an unjustifiable number of such outfits and jump at the chance to wear them. Against the etiquette about which I am otherwise all too conscious, I frequently, and unrepentantly, overdress for the occasion.” Julia Glass

If you followed my blog throughout this past summer, you already know about my love of kimonos and how sad I was to retire them for the winter. Most of my kimono collection (which is around 50 different kimonos at last count) are warm weather pieces being made of lace and other sheer lightweight fabrics. For months now, I have been trying to figure out a way to style a kimono for winter and still maintain the appropriate amount of warmth in these frigid temperatures. I tried a few different layering techniques with the kimonos in my closet and nothing seemed to work. And then I saw this kimono-style robe from Rosegal and it seemed perfectly suited for winter kimono-wearing with its heavier fabric, long sleeves, maxi length, and rich vibrant colors to stand out against a snow covered background.

Kimonos are meant to be layered and I love the look of a cute graphic tee underneath. I shared my personal collection of graphic tees from Torrid yesterday which included this fabulous Wonder Woman tee. The colors in the graphic on the tee paired perfectly underneath the geometric print of the kimono. Plus a kimono sort of feels like a super hero cape…so it was an obvious sartorial union.

I also love joining together the drama of a maxi length kimono with the ruggedness of a pair of jeans. And the paradox of a graphic tee with pearls always makes me happy. Add some pearl trimmed booties and a neutral tench coat and you have a kimono styled comfortably for the winter months. Except for the salt and sludge that quickly coated the hem of my kimono. But nothing that a quick wash through the gentle cycle couldn’t handle.

“I love kimonos because you can just throw them on over anything. Ever since I got my first kimono from Lane Bryant in high school and thought, ‘This is amazing; I can wear it with everything!'” Lizzo

“Women who wear kimonos, when the fight, they have to keep their knees together, and when they use a sword, they have to move the sleeves otherwise it gets caught.” Lucy Liu

I will admit that I am bit jealous of both of them that they each got to meet the other! Aren’t blogger meet ups just the best?!
