A Party of Polka Dots with Rosegal

I think I have loved polka dots for just about forever. Maybe a few years less than that. There’s just something about the polka dot that exudes femininity, whimsy, nostalgia, and sends me back in time to a simpler generation that has always fascinated me. A time when people read books instead of Kindles. A time when a telephone line was a luxury. A time when women got dressed up for their husbands and for each other.

*Disclosure: This dress was provided to me for review. All opinions and thoughts are completely my own.

These days things have become much more complicated even with all the ease of technology right at our fingertips and I feel myself drawn even more to the fashions that take me back in time. Even for a brief moment. A moment so that I can catch my breath and forget all the problems in the world. I think I am starting to become quite the girl of vintage taste.

In this post, I had planned to write a little history about the polka dot, but during my research I stumbled upon an article on The Hairpin. And they seem to have covered it all better than I ever could…(or perhaps I’m just lazy), so for an interesting read about polka dots, check out A Brief History of Polka Dots.

When I saw this vintage inspired teal polka dot dress from Rosegal, it was love at first sight. The high stand collar, pleated neck detail, 3/4 sleeve length, and of course, the polka dots sent me swooning like a 50’s gal over the boy next door.

It took me some playing around to figure out how to best style the dress, however. As much as I love the polka dots, there are a lot of polka dots. The pattern needed to be broken up. And what better way than to add a contrasting polka dot scarf! I tried it tied in a retro style bow around my neck which I am loving. But it also looks kind of chic with the scarf simply draped around my neck.

The dress also is a quite baggy so I added a skinny black belt to give it some shape. I am sharing some photos without the belt to show you the actual cut of the dress. And how fitting that I already had these adorable black vintage inspired shoes and flower headband.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in the fabric and cut of the dress when it first arrived. It is a stiff cotton broadcloth that wrinkles with every move.  And every move is a bit hindered by the stiff cloth. The shoulders and sleeves are also a tad bit snug (there is no separate shoulder added into the dress, the front and back of the dress are each one piece sewn together.) Perhaps I should have ordered one size up. With that being said, I am still really loving this polka dot party of a dress!

What prints and patterns do you love? Do any of them make you feel all nostalgic like polka dots do for me?
