5 Reasons to Wear a Hat this Winter with Rosegal

If you are a regular reader, you already know that I have quite an obsession with hats recently. You also know that where I live in the very northern reaches of New York State, we are experiencing one of the coldest winters ever. For example, this weekend it was reported that the blistering cold temperatures combined with very aggressive winds resulted in real feel temperatures of -50 degrees. I know for some of my southern friends, temperatures like that may be difficult to grasp. Put simply, that’s effing cold. Needless to say, I stayed inside all cuddled up and warm with my family this weekend. In fact, as I sit here typing this post on Sunday afternoon, I realize that I have not left the house since Thursday afternoon.

*This is a sponsored post. This hat was provided to me by Rosegal for purposes of this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I figured with it being so cold outside, now is a great time to discuss some reasons for wearing hats this winter. You will probably find them pretty obvious reasons. But that’s okay. This is all for fun anyway. Clearly, I had to take my photos inside the house…because cameras (and people) freeze in these types of temperatures. And clearly, my Christmas tree is still on display a week into January. However, we did take all of the Christmas decorations down today…except for the tree. I like its comforting warm ambience and may leave it up for awhile. We are now calling it our living room tree.

Now you already know that I haven’t left my house in days, so you may be wondering why in the world I am wearing a hat indoors. That leads me directly to the number one reason for wearing a hat this winter.

1. Hats keep your head warm…which in turn keeps the rest of your body warm. And when it’s -50 degrees outside, it can get a bit chilly inside even with the heat going full blast. Yes, I wore this hat all day yesterday…inside my house. And I was comfortable and warm.

2. If you have to venture outside in this crazy weather and the winds are blowing at about 25 miles per hour, a hat will keep your hair from blowing all in your face and blocking your view. I know I hate it when a giant wind gust slaps me in the face and I get a mouthful of my own hair. So gross. It gets all stuck in your lipstick and you find yourself pulling off one scrawny strand at a time. Just be sure to wear a hat that is snug on your head on windy days.  Otherwise, you may lose your hat!

*Jeans: Gap Factory (Old).

3. Hats hide your gray roots. Especially when it’s too cold to head down to the salon and get your color touched up! It has been about 5 weeks since my roots were last colored and there is a very evident silver sheen going on around my scalp! But you can’t see it, can you? Nope. Because hats are wonderful for disguising these things.

*Crochet Duster Cardigan and Long Tassel Necklace: Cato Fashions (Old).

4. Hats are also great for covering up bad hair. Maybe it’s just too darn cold to even wash your hair. Or maybe you are just learning how to use a curling iron at the age of 43 and haven’t quite figured out how to get the curls to distribute evenly over your head. (Do you like the curls sticking out of my hat though? The top of my hair is completely flat. And gray. But you can’t see the multitude of flaws going on up there.  Hats are wonderful.)

*White Duster Cardigan: Fort Drum Exchange (Old).

5. Hats are freaking adorable. Once you find the right hat shape for your head, you can elevate any outfit and add lots of extra interest. Perhaps a pop of color is what you need. Or maybe you want a subtle pattern mix. Maybe you are going for an artsy vibe or you just need some wow factor. If you haven’t tried a hat yet, I highly recommend it! Hats have quickly become one of my favorite accessories ever.

*Booties: Old Navy (Old).

“A hat is a flag, a shield, a bit of armor, and the badge of femininity. A hat is the difference between wearing clothes and wearing a costume; it’s the difference between being dressed and being dressed up; it’s the difference between looking adequate and looking your best. A hat is to be stylish in, to glow under, to flirt beneath, to make all others seem jealous over, and to make all men feel masculine about. A piece of magic is a hat.” –Martha Sliter

What are your thoughts about hats? Do you wear them? Which is your favorite style?

Shelbee, this is a super cute hat and it really looks fab on you. Perfect style for you. Also, I love that you still have your tree up and I hope it gives you a little comfort during this unbelievable cold season. I totally understand those temps having grown up in North Iowa. We were cold for Texas with temps in the teens. Take care, friend!

Carrie, thank you so much! The tree does provide a certain amount of warmth and comfort. I figured people have plants all around their homes, why not a tree? And at least I can’t kill this one…as I would live plants (I recently killed a cactus)! It looks like this cold is finally breaking and we might hit high 40’s by mid-week. Thanks for stopping by and for the warm wishes! Have a wonderful week.

Yay, I am so excited that I inspired you to order a beret, Roxanne! I can’t wait to see it! You are going to totally rock it, I’m sure! And once you see how cute it is, you won’t forget to throw it on whether you are having a good or bad hair day.

These are great reasons to wear and own a hat or hats. Your hat is so pretty! I love the pattern and it really does look good on you. On my end, just like with mittens I wasn’t all about hats. I didn’t really buy myself one until two years ago but let me tell you I love how it keeps my head warm. I feel like my entire body is warm when I wear a hat. I also love how I can get away with not having to fix my hair on days that I just need to go and don’t have the time to do anything with my hair. Long hair can be such a pain sometimes!

Thanks so much, Maureen! I have had such a crazy relationship with my own hair from shaving it bald to growing it out only to end up back with a pixie cut. My hair has always been a pain no matter what length it is! Although hats seem to work (look) best when my hair is longer, for sure. And I just love the extra wow factor that a hat can add! Thank you for stopping by and sharing your hat stories as well. Have a wonderful day, my friend.

Thanks so much, Victoria! That is so funny that your motivation to take down the Christmas tree was a birthday in February! I might just put some Valentine’s decorations on it and leave it up! Have a fabulous day!

Thanks so much, Sam! I never wore hats when my hair was short. They looked terrible and I have a giant head…so a hat just amplified that. One of the reasons I grew out my hair! Ha. Have a great day, my friend.

I haven´t been in the internet for the last week but I have seen the news and that you are having extremely cold weather. Well, they always talk about New York but you are so close. I always think about you and your family. I hope you are ok and warm!

I always wear hats, all year round. Although the inconvenience is that it makes my hair flat in the top (I am probably the only person who notices it, but still 🙂 ). During the winter I like beanies but also classic winter floppy hats. I used to also wear a beret hat but after our last big house move I seem to have lost some clothing and accessories!

    Hugs!

Hi Helen! It is so good to hear from you! When you hear on the news about bitter cold temperatures in New York, they are absolutely talking about the region of New York where I live! It is literally one of the coldest places in the United States every winter. The past two days we have hit the 50 degree mark which has been a lovely little tease of warm weather. But it is dropping down well below 0 degrees again by tomorrow night with snow and ice storms coming through. I guess I need to get out my warmest hats! And you do look so lovely in a hat, my friend. Usually if I wear a beret, I just leave it on all day so you can never see how flat my hair is on top! Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

Love your outfit! I was so glad that the temperatures were finally warming up this week as it has been freezing cold but I am so awful about wearing hats even if they do keep my head warmer.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you so much, Joanne! I really have to wear a hat around here especially with the crazy winds we get…otherwise I will be eating my hair every time I step outside! It has warmed up here the past 2 days into the 50’s, but will be -15 by tomorrow night. I cannot even believe we will be experiencing a drop of 65 degrees in 24 hours. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

I LOVE hats, and like to wear them all of the time! They make my life easier, and I save time wearing hats. I do love that they make you feel warmer on a cold winter day, too! The hat looks great on you! I love the color white and black!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Natalie, thanks so much for this comment! It makes me very happy to know that I am not the only one obsessed with hats! Sometimes I feel a little silly wearing a hat indoors, but they are just cute and warm, I cannot help myself.
